Are The Results Rigged

Published on March 27th, 2009 by in Polls

We had quite a conversation last night about whether or not the results are rigged from who goes home each week, to who is in the bottom 3, to who actually wins. What do you think? Leave your vote in the poll and then back up your vote in a comment.

The contestants of season 2 were very clear about the results being rigged, no evidence they just jam the phone lines and no one ever knows….

What!!? Professional wrasslin’ is fake!!? You’re kidding me! When did this start. I always thought it as for real, even the fact that there seems to be a camera around during the most private conversations between the bad guys when they plot to beat the good guys. Well, that does it, I’m never watching wrasslin’ again. Now what am I supposed to do with all of my WWE memorabilia? I’ve got stuff clear back to Nature Boy Rick Flare.

I don’t believe that Matt was actually 2nd from bottom when Dial Idol had Allison, Megan, Scott, Michael and Anoop showing less votes. The history of Dial Idol is 97% accuracy, and it predicted the winner correctly every year.
Its a scam to make people call, the more calls that come in the more money they sell their commercial time for.

Ah C_B but if you leave here and visit other countries on the alternate AI worlds you will see pretty universal astonishment at Matt being bottom 3 and especially being bottom 2 which Ryan DID say he was. It isn’t just us cranky insular, IBLers who feel that way. Even people Mod Joyce bans feel that way! :w00t:
Immaterial – it’s still a subset of idol fans. I would venture to guess that those who frequent the various idol-centric sites are a small portion of idol watchers and – more specifically – voters. I’ve been told more than once – “You know too much about AI”.

Remember the famous headline “Dewey defeats Truman”? Do you know why the poll was so wrong? It was a poll taken by telephone, and telephones weren’t universal at that point in time due to their expense. The initial sample was flawed. I’m saying the poll of devoted idol followers based upon web site traffic could also be flawed.
Yup I remember that one. I also remember “Gore defeats Bush” and the judges overturned that one. Just sayin’
Something I’ve wondered about… does the length of a contestant’s name impact the potential number of votes they can actually get?

Idol’s voting system is ‘finite’ – meaning the phone lines can only handle so many calls. And with phone lines constantly busy for nearly all contestants there can’t be that much of a difference between the actual numbers of votes… the margins would have to be insignificant.

That said, even a fraction of a second’s difference between the prerecorded messages (Thank you for voting for ____ ) could place a contestant with a longer name at a disadvantage.

‘Danny Gokey’, for example, is shorter & quicker to pronounce than ‘Scott MacIntyre’.

Did Megan Joy Corkrey know something along these lines when she shortened her name to a quick & simple Megan Joy last week (escaping a deserved spot in the bottom three this week)?
Right now, it just says “Thank you for calling contestant 1″ (or whatever number they are.

As for releasing vote totals…………

According to Ryan ~36M votes were cast, with Adam, Allison & Danny taking the top three spots. Lets play “Lets Pretend”:

Adam – 8M votes
Allison – 7M votes
Danny – 6M votes
.
.
.
.
Scott – 1M
Matt – 800k
Michael – 700K

There would be no reason for the fans of the singers who trail the leaders badly to tune every week, knowing their favorite had no shot. It’s a combination of hope & the unknown that keeps people watching and ratings up. TPTB have made the decision that stable ratings from the fans of doomed contestants are worth the charges of manipulation, whether those charges are founded or not.

Eventhough my hope for Megan to suddenly break out and do something spectacular is dwindling, the fact that she did not go home after, some could say, 3 disappointing performances, makes me think it’s accurate. On the other hand, that she wasn’t in the bottom 3 as many expected, makes me think otherwise. Fact is Michael was terrible, Simon was right, he was just taking part in something he couldn’t win, so at least that wasn’t fixed.

This is from the AI website under FAQS

“A weekly monitoring procedure will be in place to prevent individuals from unfairly influencing the outcome of the voting by generating significant blocks of votes using technical enhancements. The producers reserve the right to remove any identified ‘power dialing’ votes. Note that this applies to both toll-free and Text Messaging votes.”

That’s pretty much the way I see it.

I do enjoy the competition of the show, however, just give me the singing! I love the singing. (most of the time lol) I always have my faves and really, I don’t care who wins. To counteract THAT, I do vote some.

Whatever TPTB do is out of our control anyway, so I choose to love the fun and the cheese factor and the online friendships here because of the show.

I couldn’t think of ONE intelligent thing to say about the rigging on the radio show last night. So much for grace under pressure. I um-ed and nervous-sniffed my way through it. lol

Anyway, just sing for me!

Considering there’s a betting line in Vegas for AI I would say no, they’re not rigged – too many legs would get broken.

Also, since there were huge scandals in the 50′s with quiz shows & the 60′s with disk jockey payolla, rigging reality shows in general may have legal ramifications.

34. There’s no “who cares” choice.
