I took this out of the results post and I am putting it into its own post because I would really like to know what everyone thought of the Celine and Elvis duet on Idol Gives Back. I loved it. Absolutely loved it. In fact it is the only part of the show I enjoyed. I just wish I understood exactly how it was done. So what did you think? Did you love it? Leave some thoughts.

The Elvis Celine song was interesting. I didn’t find it amazing or even close to the highlight of the show. For pure emotion and artistic excellence, Carrie’s “I’ll Stand By You” was absolutely superb.
By the way, the Elvis Celine song was accomplished through digital effect and awith a stand-in for the long shots and the back shots. Nice job, but I’ll take Natalie and Nat King Cole’s duet over this one any day
I watched the 1968 Elvis song on youtube and I think I have it figured out. I think they pre-recorded it having the contestants wear their outfits early. I say that because there are seven idols standing behind Celine and Elvis in white clothes but there were only six that week. Then they had Celine sing in front of an audience and I think they added the image and video from Elvis’ 1968 performance into the video. If you run the two videos side by side, (the one from 1968 and from the Gives Back show) it is the same video of Elvis. It would be difficult to add 1968 Elvis into that video if there was also an impersonator singing with Celine. That clip messed with my head until I could come up with an explaination I could except.
it was done with a stand in impersonater but then digitaly mix elvis singing with her and computered in. I think it would of been much and I mean way much cooler if they had the duet done with Elvis and Lisa Marie his daughter!
what was Elvis doing while celine was singing?
Rolling over in his grave.
The Elvis and celine was the highlite of the show. i too would like to know how they done it. what was Elvis doing while celine was singing? it was all very impressive.
I remember the day Elvis died, I was ten, but it was one of those things that happens that you will never forget what you were doing that day. I loved E lvis, the music and the way he gave it to us. He was sexy, handsome, whitty, the perfect man for me at the time.Celine did what she has always wanted to do. So what if he is deceased, her dream came true and even if it had flaws for one moment in time I saw what could of really happened if the King had of lived.I loved it, for all the haters and the none dreamers ——step off
I thought the duet was fuzzy and only ok. The show was fantastic. I’m glad they raised all that money and I truly hope it all goes where it is supposed to go because no one should be hungry, especially kids. I thought Kelly was great but did she get a bit ‘fluffy’? I got my donation in and hope everyone gave, even if it was only a buck.
when i watched the show i was dumbfounded because the idol sign in the background was so damn blurry….so i thought at first it was celine with an impersonator. But now i have other conclusions! I think celine pre-recorded the song and then they super-imposed both images on the stage. I think the audience saw it like we did……….blurry. By no means do i know any technical shit, but if you watch the movie “The Illusionist”, you’ll get a better idea. If i’m not right about this, then i’m totally flaberghasted. Anyone have a better idea???
I hated the Elvis-Celine digital effect. To even have Celine of stage, digitally, at the same time as The King is blasphemous. C’mon Natalie Cole did that in a video years ago, and it worked irs charm in the Gump movie, but. . .
The show would have been tremendous if they would have had Chris Daughtry and Katharine McPhee on there. There both in the top charts right now
I thought Celine & Elvis were great! The Pesley people have shows out on PBS with Elvis’s & hi og people signing live with him and during pledge drive they sell the packeage and it looks great. Anyway I,m glad your here
It was the ONLY part of the show you enjoyed?? Come on, Slim! The show was pretty good! You didn’t enjoy Kelly Clarkson? Or Carrie? Or Jack Black? Or Ben Stiller? Or the Ryan screw up in the beginning? Or the Simpsons?? Or even the half-way decent group songs?
ANYWAY, I thought the Celine/Elvis thing was pretty good. It looked very real and it didn’t creep me out like it did a lot of other people. (I’ve been reading stuff elsewhere.)
It would be cool to see how they did it, but if I never find out, it’ll be ok. :) Personally, I don’t care all that much about when segments were taped and if Sanjaya was really there or not. I know that the show and TPTB manipulate and edit all for ratings etc. I really don’t care.
Why oh why do I love this show? :em09:
“Now I also heard that Sanjaya wasn’t there at all, that his footage was added in as well… ” Penny.
This is probably a fact. I saw Mandisa in concert and she said that her auditon that was televised was not what she sang in front of the judges, rather it was what she sang in front of the producers prior to going into the audition room. The producers cut and pasted the segments for television. She didn’t know it until it was televised.
I’m with Penny, the Simpsons may have been the hightlight of the show, and I can’t stand The Simpsons as a television show. Past Idols Kelly and Carrie were probably the best entertainers. It makes you wonder why Idol Gives Back couldn’t have also been an Idol reunion!!!
What a great opportunity to bring back, Diana DeGarmo, Kellie Pickler, Chris Daughtry, Josh Gracin, Bo Bice, Katherine McPhee (I’m still in love with those brown eyes), Elliot, Yamin, and others to raise money for a great cause and provide a night of nostalgia for Idol fans.
Driller, you’re always so negative. :em21:
Aside from being fascinated with how it was done, I thought it was a little wierd. Maybe it’s because I had it on in HD, but Elvis looked like a really bad Pixar annimation.
I think Joyce is right, the audience probably just saw Celene because occasionally she didn’t appear to know exactly where to look to find Elvis (as if he was going anywhere).
It may have made television history, but I wouldn’t bet on history repeating itself any time soon.
This is what I think they did.. but I may be wrong.
I think there was an impersonator for the far away shots, but original Elvis footage was layered over him, and up close it was actual footage digitally imposed over the Idol stage scene….
Now I also heard that Sanjaya wasn’t there at all, that his footage was added in as well…
Makes ya wonder just how much we see of the real thing.
As far as the duet… I liked it, thought it was pretty cool… I’m not a Celine fan by far.. actually I cant stomach her… and I kinda wished she would just shush so I could hear Elvis more clearly…
Out of everything… I liked Carrie Underwood’s song the best… made me cry like a baby…. and the Simpsons bit cracked me up.
This was the only part of the show that i was able to see due to my work schedule…but i thought it was cool…i am an elvis fan even though he was around before i was born and it was great to “bring him back”
Yes, I loved it. I thought it looked very real and that Celine did a wonderful job of singing along and harmonizing with him. I wonder what exactly the audience was looking at? Most likely just Celine standing up there, but was there any kind of green screen or something? Yeah, I’d love to know the technical stuff behind it. Wish they’d have a little segment on results night about it. But probably not.
