There has been a lot of questions on how the Top 12 will be decided and if it will be a 50/50 split of guys and girls and I have uncovered all you need to know.
While the Top 36 is a 50/50 split of Male and Female contestants, the Top 12 most likely will not but still could. Check out how this will all be determined below.
* Round 1a (2/17/09) : 12 of 36 singers perform. America Votes.
* Round 1b (2/18/09) : Top Male and Top Female move to Top 12 along with the next Top vote getter (Male or Female) 3 Total Advance
* Round 2a (2/24/09) : 12 of 36 singers perform. America Votes.
* Round 2b (2/25/09) : Top Male and Top Female move to Top 12 along with the next Top vote getter (Male or Female) 3 Total Advance
* Round 3a (3/03/09) : 12 of 36 singers perform. America Votes.
* Round 3b (3/04/09) : Top Male and Top Female move to Top 12 along with the next Top vote getter (Male or Female) 3 Total Advance
* Round 4 (3/05/09) : Wild Card Show. 4th highest vote getter from rounds 1,2 and 3 get a chance to perform along with anyone else the judges want. At the end of the show 3 more people will be added to the Top 12.
As you can see the Top 12 may or may not be a 50/50 split of guys and girls. We could end up with any combination of guys and girls this season.
Hopefully this clears up any questions anyone may have and hopefully I explained it so everyone understands. If you have any thoughts or are unclear feel free to leave a comment.

good question. No idea who will be singing in each round. That of course in my opinion is where the rigging will take place. TPTB will make sure that ones they want passed through are split up and not competing against each other.
Maybe Alan will have a better idea on this and hopefully he will chime in. He does seem to be absent today. Darryl must be working him to hard on something
Remember though at this point though we are left clueless as to the order cause remember we aren’t even supposed to know the Top 36 yet. It’s still unofficial and rumor.

I haven’t purchased or downloaded any of the female idol winner’s music, if that tells you anything about what I think. This is where we get into humble opinion. In mine only 2 of the girls were great. 1 (and always #1) Kelly C and 2: Carrie U. The guys in year 6 were awful so Sparks won as last one standing. Fantasia is good but clearly not great. Last year it was clear that the Davids were head and shoulders above all the girls except perhaps for Carly and being Irish, tattoo’d and having “plant” stuck on her, she was doomed from the get go.

Well yeah I guess I see now that only 2 of the girls were great, but now lets direct it to the guys during those years, yes they weren’t good season 6, and there were only 4 …not good ones in the top 12 season 3, so that’s why girls one those years.

You are correct – the judges will decide which three Wild Card people will round out the Top 12. America has no say in it.
I’m betting the ratings for the Wild Card show will not be anywhere near what AI is used to getting. And that could spell trouble for the three that make it through from that show.

DJSlim’s and my understanding of the Wild Card Round is that the only people guaranteed to get a second chance that night is the next highest vote getter in each of the first three rounds. After that, the judges are allowed to bring anyone else back for the show that they want to give a second chance to.
While we have not heard any official number, keep in mind that the Wild Card Show is currently scheduled to only last an hour. Plus, the judges will have to reveal the three lucky contestants moving on to the Top 12 by the end of the show as well. My thinking, and I have nothing to back this up, is that each judge will be allowed to bring one person into the Wild Card Show. That would give us a total of 7 performances plus comments by the judges and decision within an hour format.
