It’s me, ABB, guest-posting at Slim’s place again. A couple of comments on talent got my attention, and I thought it would be interesting to see what you guys think about the subject.
Dictionary.com defines talent as
1) a special natural ability or aptitude and
2) a capacity for achievement or success: ability.
This objective definition leaves plenty of room for subjective interpretation. One could easily consider all the contestants who make it to Hollywood as being talented. Then the more talented of that group make it to the Final 24, and each week, we lose the least talented from the group. Using that rationale would leave us with the two most talented singers in the final 2. But how many of you would have considered that to be true in previous years? Blake a more talented singer than Melinda? Really?! You could argue for the talent to refer to entertainment ability, or pure vocals, or a combination of looks, personality, voice, etc. Actually let’s not ARGUE about it, just respect each other’s opinions! I personally would rank vocals above all else, but here are two other members’ opinions on talent taken from previous posts:
RandomX: Cute and pretty voiced does not talent or records make.
Teri: Everybody has a different definition of talent, here is mine – natural ability: an unusual natural ability to do something well, especially in artistic areas that can be developed by training, and a willingness to learn through different venues. A willingness to expand.
Here’s mine: AI talent – the ability to please me and make me want to listen to more (I’m very superficial that way, ha)
What do you think? Talent – who’s got it and why?

I have to agree with Logan and Gina. Yes, Logan, Brooke has real talent. That’s why she is my favorite this year. Really talented performers have the ability to transport his or her or their listeners to a place other than where they started from. Two good examples are Pink Floyd and The Moody Blues. Both bands have talent in places where other artists don’t even have places. Their music transcends earthly bonds by making the imagination travel elsewhere by leaps and bounds. Of course, they don’t work equally well for all listeners becausae there is no such thing as total universal appeal. I could stand on a busy street corner all day touting them and there would be plenty of people who would stop to disagree with me.
I think its something that is different and keeps everyone on the edge of their seat
It is Amy! Too bad everyone don’t get that. The night the wrong one get voted off all h888 will break loose, our deleate fingers will get sore :em62:
Sorry for no advance warning, Teri! You and RandomX just gave me the germ of an idea. You can always amend your previous statement, as you did, Teri. And I love what you wrote.
Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder, as well as in the ear of the listeners.
My idea of talent is what is pleasing to the one observing. ie: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, the sounds to please my ear. The beauty in movement.
I like music that pleases me, my children like their music. One thing we all agree on is that when my 5 year old Grandson sings and dances, he is more talented than anyone in the world.
Brooke White Has Talent! Her voice is amazing!!! She just It 100% unique.
Has Shyamali’s talent “grown” since last season? I guess to know that, we would have to find someone who has paid close attention to them….um, I mean it, the whole time. Anyone out there qualify? Ahem. :em62:
Yes, talent is a gift. You are either born with it or you are not. I was given the gift of natural rhythm. I was definitely a better than average drummer. I developed what singing ability I had as much as I could but I never had enough talent to front a band. I see the same kind of talent in many aspiring singers.
I also notice who has an actual vocal talent but has no idea how to use it. I love watching the auditions and being able to say, “There’s a voice in there somewhere.” Now if they would only get some singing lessons! Enough of the yodeling and shouting!
This year’s top 24 were some of the most talented yet but too many lack the technique of songcraft. In other words, they got it but they don’t know what to do with it.
Natural talent is a gift. And David Archuleta definitely has it. :em19:
What more would we expect from Slim? LOL
I think talent is in some aspects separate from entertainment value. Someone can possess extreme talent and be a dud on stage. I see it as the whole package. If you can’t DO something with your talent, it’s only valuable to those relatives your momma brings over and forces to watch you.
I also think “talent” is subjective. Someone I might see as talented, you might not, and vice-versa. There is no gold standard of “talent”.
Interesting subject, Amy. Now I have a headache because I had to actually THINK. :em52:
Talent = Shyamali shaking her breasts for us last season
