Live Blog Begins Here
Contestant : Todrick Hall
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-01
Song Title : “Since You Been Gone”
Judges Thoughts : (E) You are such a great performer. Like how you did something different with the song. It was great. (R) I am a fan of yours but it didn’t even sound like the same song. I still wanna see you sing. You don’t have to completely change the song. (K) You are a strong enough singer to not have to change a song that much. You took a risk, next time hold back. (S) You came over as a dancer trying to sing. I thought it was a crazy arrangement. You murdered the original song. It was verging on stupid.
Slim’s Thoughts : A Kelly Clarkson song. How dare he. I guess it would have been ok if it was actually good. Pack your bags. Slim’s Score: D
Contestant : Aaron Kelly
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-02
Song Title : “Here Comes Goodbye”
Judges Thoughts : (S) It was actually quite a good performance. You are here for a reason. You are a good singer, you need to take control of the performance. You will be here next week. (K) You are my favorite kind of contestant. You will get better every week. You can’t teach people what you know. We will see incredible things from you. (R) You have all those pipes, a huge voice. A couple of pitchy moments but I am a big fan. (E) You will be here a longtime. I love how humble you are.
Slim’s Thoughts : I am a sucker for Rascal Flatts. Amazing. Close your eyes and listen again. You can’t tell the difference. Rock on Aaron. Slim’s Score: A+
Contestant : Jermaine Sellers
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-03
Song Title : “Get Here”
Judges Thoughts : (E) I love the way you look and I love that song. You were singing the song more as a performance and there were a few times you went off. You were trying to hard. (R) Weird choice for me. See you as a Maxwell. Just sing sometimes. (K) You wanted to show everyone what you could do. Make your runs meaningful. It felt a little old. (S) It sounded as if you were screaming. It was so over the top. It didn’t work. You have blown your opportunity.
Slim’s Thoughts : All I can think of is George Huff and he sucked too. While it wasn’t as bad as Todrick, it wasn’t anything anyone will remember tomorrow and it was pitchy as hell. Slim’s Score: C-
Contestant : Tim Urban
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-04
Song Title : “Apologize”
Judges Thoughts : (S) We made the right choice the first time by not putting you through. The vocals were weak. You didn’t come over as a natural performer. Your voice isn’t good enough. You need to get it together if you stay. (K) The music swallowed you up. With your guitar we could get more of a feel for you. You are current and you need to listen to the notes if you go forward. (R) It was the wrong song. None of it worked. I think you are better than that. (E) You couldn’t hit those high notes. If you close your eyes and hear that it was horrible.
Slim’s Thoughts : Maybe the Idol producers shouldn’t have bothered calling Tim back. Hopefully his bags are still packed. He is headed for the tarmac. It’s not to late to look for a new gig. Slim’s Score: D
Contestant : Joe Munoz
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-05
Song Title : “You and I Both”
Judges Thoughts : (E) You are so comfortable on stage. (R) Not quite the perfect song choice but you have a great voice. You did a good job with it dawg. (K) Never thought you would have sung that. You had a few issues with the chorus. Tonight you have been the best so far. (S) It was an ok, safe performance.
Slim’s Thoughts : Not bad at all compared to what we have heard tonight. Joe should stick around another couple of week. Slim’s Score: B
Contestant : Tyler Grady
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-06
Song Title : “American Woman”
Judges Thoughts : (S) People are going to remember that performance for the wrong reasons. You aren’t spending enough time on your vocals. (K) You didn’t add something original to it. Bring it in to this decade. (R) It was style over substance. (E) You have the poses but you are lacking the excitement. You have to work on the singing. Get into that performance.
Slim’s Thoughts : A decent performance. Facial expressions need some work. Slim’s Score: B-
Contestant : Lee DeWyze
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-07
Song Title : “Chasing Cars”
Judges Thoughts : (E) I love the tone of your voice. It was a great song till it felt pushed. (R) I didn’t like the song for you. You are more of a harder rocker. It didn’t quite work for me. (K) who knows what she said. (S) This was the best performance of the night. You are a naturally, good singer. You are going to do really good in this competition.
Slim’s Thoughts : Another one of the better performances tonight but still nothing to get hot and bothered over. Slim’s Score: B
Contestant : Jon Park
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-08
Song Title : “God Bless This Child”
Judges Thoughts : (S) You have to have an incredible voice to take on that song and you haven’t. It cam over as flat and zero emotion. It was a pointless performance. (K) I agree with Simon. You have a big voice in there and there was no connection. It was sleepy at times and indulgent. (R) It made you feel old and all out of sorts. (E) I don’t know why you picked that song. A different song would show who you are.
Slim’s Thoughts : I felt like I was at church. It wasn’t bad but it was forgettable. Slim’s Score: C+
Contestant : Michael Lynche
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-09
Song Title : “This Love”
Judges Thoughts : (E) You have so much personality. I thought it was a great song choice. A few small pitch problems. (R) I like you, I like your persona. (K) It was depressing in here till that. It wasn’t outrageously great. (S) You were the small act before the main act. You delivered so little on that performance. You have to nail the song and make people listen to you as an artist.
Slim’s Thoughts : I am at a loss. I don’t know if I liked it or not. When it started I thought it was going to be terrible but it seemed to get better. Slim’s Score: B
Contestant : Alex Lambert
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-10
Song Title : “It’s A Wonderful World”
Judges Thoughts : I don’t know who was happier for that to end. That was the most uncomfortable performance of the night. If you can’t get your nerves together, this is never going to work for you. (K) I want to give you a hug right now. Your tone is crazy but it you aren’t all together. You have potential. (R) You have the voice and tone. You need to pull it all together. I hope you stick around. (E) I like you too. I like you are holding onto the mullet. You have a great voice.
Slim’s Thoughts : The number one most awful American Idol performance of all time. Slim’s Score: F
Contestant : Casey James
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-11
Song Title : “Heaven”
Judges Thoughts : (K) I didn’t recognize you with your shirt on. You are “eye” candy but you are also “ear” candy (E) I could feel Kara undressing you with your eyes. You sounded great. You will get votes like crazy. (R) Great song choice. Great voice. I like you too. (S) We are both cursed with good looks. You picked the right song. It came over as honest and likable.
Slim’s Thoughts : Other than a few missed notes it wasn’t half bad. Slim’s Score: B+
Contestant : Andrew Garcia
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-12
Song Title : “Sugar Were Going Down”
Judges Thoughts : (S) I was looking forward to you more than anyone else but I was disappointed. To serious, to indulgent. You didn’t take a risk tonight. (K) You did take a risk but that song isn’t meant to be acoustic. You are great though. (R) The arrangement was strange for me. Go back to being you. (E) I am thrilled you are on the show.
Slim’s Thoughts : Andrew closes the show with a crappy Fall Out Boys performance that will be forgotten before the judges finish critiquing. Slim’s Score: C
They said it would be a girls year. They sucked out. Now it should be a guys year. Well they sucked out too. With the exception of a couple of people from both genders this contestant pool is about as bad as it gets. To think we still have weeks and weeks of this to go.
Slim’s Picks To Depart
- Todrick Hall
- Alex Lambert
So how did your favorite fair tonight? Leave your thoughts in a comment and tune in tomorrow night as Queen Angie blogs the results live.

I thought Todrick Hall’s set was tight! Todrick sounded like Cameo, Gap Band, Oran ‘Juice’ Jones type of tunes. It had funk, something lacking on this bland, Top 40, mindless t.v. program. Todrick, keep it up man!
What I found odd is the judges told a female singer the day prior to sing newer (i.e. crummy) music.
They said the same to Jermaine Sellers. It’s the classics that hold up to the test of time. Not the garbage, myopic, John Mayer-esque type of stuff.
Lastly, why are the judges for the folks who sing like Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Simply Red et al.,? That kind of music is 1, one tiny notch above John Tesh, Yanni and Michael Bolton..
sry i meant allison! not alloso
i cant wait for alliso to perform tonight! her album is amazing…
WOW – I wasn’t impressed with any of the guys. Casey, Tyler and Lee were my favs. I think John and Alex will be the first two guys leaving. Guys had better step it up a couple of notches or the we will be left with all girls in the top 3. Happy Idoling.
Todrick* is trying to sound like Teddy Pendagrass and it ain”t happnin’./ Aaron* has a decent voice and needs to stick with country./ Jermaine* has a lot of range but needs to control it better./ Tim* doesn’t bring much at all to the table imo./ Joe* has some ability and is cute enough to bring in some heart throb votes for a while./ Tyler’s* off key scream fest was a joke to me, he must have done fantastic last week because it saved his a*s this one. Lee’s* the man to beat after last nite imo.He has to stick with songs that showcase his hard gritty voice. he has personality and showmanship going strong for him as well./ Jon* His voice is better then he song he picked, he was demonstrating his range and conrol but no one was feeling it, not even him./ Michael* lost his timing with the song, imo it just got away from him./ Alex* is toast period. He’s just not ready for the big stage./ Casey* Really good voice and looks too, a front runner for sure./ Andrew* He and Lee are my two favorite guys. Andrew may have the most to give the music loving public as an artist. I think he could go into a studio and create some awsome songs today.
@ Mark:
I totally agree, she is out of control. I couldn’t beleive when she said “b” word last night.
Well that wasn’t very good, now was it…?
I think it was Andrew and Corey all the way. My gut feeling is that Tim Urban and Jermaine are going home.
Overall, I thought the singing tonight was pretty weak.
Lee’s was the first one that actually sounded like a real performance. What is up with the mix quality on this show?
@ DJSlim:
Sadly, you’re right, Slim. If it gets worse they might need to have Kara and Bikini Girl mudwrestle.
At least the guys had an overall better night. Not fantastic, but better.
Sorry, had to get that off my chest. On a more positive note:
Andrew, Casey, Aaron, Lee, Todrick, and Joe were my fave.
@ Mark:
agreed Kara’s actions towards Casey are a little awkward for a family show but that’s the stuff that helps ratings.
With the awful contestant pool this season Idol needs all the help it can get with ratings i think.
I wish Kara would leave. Sorry if this comes off as nasty, but she acts like an immature 12 year old instead of 39. Her actions when it comes to Casey have been totally inappropriate and unprofessional. Also, her comment last night putting words in Katelyn’s mouth (or thought bubble) were inappropriate and again immature. This is on top of the Bikini Girl fiasco from last year. Bring Paula back and give Kara the boot, please.
But I thought Aaron Kelly sounded weak. And in the wrapup replay, he still sounded like a high school sophomore. No way was it A+.
Aaron, Lee, Joe & Casey were the best tonight. The others were awful! I think Aaron should go directly to Top 12 after that awesome performance. He has the looks of David Archuleta!
I thought Casey had a tight little wussy vibrato at times — as opposed to Bryan Adams’ strong phrase finishing. The judges probably couldn’t hear it because of the TV vs. the live-in-the-hall thing they talked about at the beginning of the program. I also thought he got too distracted by that sideshow judges thing at the beginning of his song. Unprofessional. So, he’d better not get overconfident. So I can’t argue much with Slim’s B+.
Tonight was very odd! What is happening?! I am in the twilight zone!!! Why? You will find out. First I should say who my favorites are.. My favorites for the men are.
Lee Dewyze
Michel Lynch
Aaron Kelly
Who I am voting for.
Tim Urban
Tyler Grady
Casey James.
Comments:
Aaron Kelly: Yikes! That wasn’t good. Wrong song for him. Just no.
Lee Dweezy: Yikes He was so off key. Or as the judges say, pitchy. Even Kara and Randy told him he was pitchy tonight.
Jermaine Sellers: Was there something wrong with his Mic? I could barely hear him in the beginning.
Casey James: That was HOTT!!!
You see!?!?! Twilight zone!! I vote for the people who aren’t my favorites and don’t vote for my favorites!!! BAH!!
Side note: Simon winking at his girlfriend. Awww! :) And is Kara turning into Paula?
@ romer:
sure am. Aaron was better than Casey
AND I’m looking forward to hearing Kris Allen tomorrow night !
My top three tonight are Michael Lynche, Casey James and Andrew Garcia.
All and all, I thought the guys were a lot better than the girls this week.
@ A:
Love me some Andrew! :)
@James
You are so welcome! :)
@ angie:
Andrew was awesome as always. originality evident. My grade woulda been at least a B slim.
Slim, you gave Aaron Kelly an A+ yet only gave a B+ to Casey James. Gonna stick with that?
@ angie:
ty so much =)
@ James:
Text “vote” to 570_ <<–insert your person’s number there
@ angie:
I know, but I don’t know the text number to send it to once the “lines open”. All I see is the toll free number to call in a vote as opposed to “if you’re with AT&T Wireless, text your vote to…”
@ James:
Voting won’t start for a few more minutes, James.
Andrew– Oh, I so love him! Not disappointed at all, like the judges were. Aside from his voice, I just like him.
Did they take away the option to text in your vote? Im stuck at work and want to be able to get my vote in.
I LOVED Casey James.
Casey–He just seems like such a nice guy. So very good looking! I really really like his voice, but that vibrato at the end of every line just about drove me crazy. What the heck was up with that? If that continues, he’ll cease to be a favorite. :silly:
Poor Alex Lambert. He looked scared to death. I kept thinking it would get a lot better, but it didn’t. I feel sad for him.
I like Michael Lynche the best so far. But he’s got to be careful not to come across as “cocky” as Ellen said.
Big Mike—LOVE! I love his personality, stage presence, dimples and VOICE!
John Park– Not a fan of the song, but he’s got a nice voice. He went flat several times, but I think with a better song, he could shine a lot more.
So far, no one has the “it factor” that I saw last season. Well, there’s still 50 minutes left I guess… :ermm:
@ rachel:
How DARE you??? :silly:
I like Lee, but I think maybe this wasn’t the best song choice. I really really want him to stay! I love the gravelly tone of his voice. Please stay, please stay, please stay!!
Sorry to offend anybody, but the guys are as horrible as the girls so far.
Tyler– I like him, I can’t help it. He’s adorable. I love his stage presence and really, he has a good voice, even though a few of the notes were a little off. I like his personality and attitude. I hope he stays!
i accept ur apology:angel: @ angie:
Joe– What a great smile! He has a very nice, pleasant voice. He’s not my favorite, but he did a great job!
@ notgettingit:
OK, well, I’m sorry to have offended you, but I will always give my opinion. For the most part, I find something to like about all the singers. If that makes me rude, so be it.
ya and theres mine@ rachel:
@ notgettingit:
No. It’s called an OPINION.
im not trying to fight either im just saying that to me when i read ur comments u sounded rude… @ angie:
I think Tyler will be going home.
@ notgettingit:
tell me how she is being rude. you are pointing fingers, i am reading what she wrote and there is nothing rude about it.
@ notgettingit:
I’m just asking here, not fighting, how was I rude?
Tim– Good grief, judges. I think he did a pretty good job. The high notes were a little rough, but I think he could really get better throughout the season. I hope he stays. And, he is just as cute as he can be!!
@ DJSlim:i mean i would stick up for my friends too… im not being rude… she is!
As much as I want Tim Urban to stay, his voice is not big enough for that song. If he stays, it will be based on looks and likeability alone.
@ notgettingit:
I LIKED Todrick…a LOT! I like Aaron OK, I just don’t love him. Reread my comments before YOU get rude. Thanks.
@ notgettingit:
i don’t see where angie is being rude
Gee, Slim..you gave Aaron and A+????? He’s not female, thin and blonde! What has the world come to???
ANGIE: why are u so rude… do you like anything or anyone! u need to chill… todrick is really amazing… dumb arrangement… aaron was good too! jermaine is amazing too just was a little over the top!
I think Jermaine did okay, but he needs to polish his scream, I agree with Kara’s critique that you can’t just show off the whole time, otherwise it gets annoying.
Simon used the “scream” word with Jermaine. Uh oh…
Jermaine–Wow. That was pretty bad. He was all over the place. He got quite screechy and out of tune. So disappointed because I wanted him to do really well!
@ rachel:
That was insane! I HATE when the judges are so hypocritical and wishy washy. “Be original! Do your own thing! Don’t be boring!” Then, when someone DARES change it up…they are all over them!!! Grrr…Oh well..I ain’t skeered to admit I like it a lot!
I liked both Todrick and Aaron. They are not my favorites but both sang great.
Aaron Kelly…wonderful singer!! Liked his voice, and his confidence! I am voting for him!
Aaron–He was ok. He’s cute as a button. Was quite shaky to me, but I am sure he will get better. I can. NOT. stand. Rascal Flatts….so…ick. Wait, was that an RF song? I have no idea…whatever. :)
Cute kid. I hope he continues to do well.
@ rachel:
so was Slim :)
I liked Todrick. Boy, the judges were harsh on him !
1st performer is Todrick. Simon mentions dancer before singer. Sounds like he’s comparing his performance to Travis Tucker. Also mentioned excruiating.
Todrick– I REALLY liked the arrangement of the song. Of course, I am not a fan of the original that much. I really like his voice even though it was shaky on the song at times and he had a few too many runs, but I would like him to stay. I also like that he came out confident and peppy and didn’t seem nervous! A MUCH better start to the show tonight!
can’t be any worse than last night was
Cue the comments! Boys! Boys! Boys!
