Blogged Live Via the East Coast Feed

Last week we sent 4 contestants home and when this week is over we will send another 4 home via the tarmac at LAX. But first we have to hear the performances and of course America has to vote.

This week it is songs of the 80′s, a theme that hasn’t been done in quite awhile. How will the contestants fair? Will your favorite shine or will they flounder? Tonight the boys will have their shot to win your vote. Sit back, relax and enjoy. This is American Idol.

Don’t forget to leave your thoughts about tonights performances in a comment or even chat with us live on the new and improved shoutbox located on the sidebar. We always value your thoughts and opinions. (Thank You Joyce for the shoutbox upgrade)

Videos From Tonight Are Online – Click Here

Name : Luke Menard (1-866-IDOLS-01)
Song Title : “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go”
Judges Thoughts : (R) It started a little rough. You were ahead of the band. A little corny but it was alright. (P) I was surprised you picked that song. I love your interpretation. (S) I didn’t like it, it was weak and a bit girly. No chance you will make it to the final 12.
Slim’s Thoughts : Pack your bags Luke. You are going home. Score 15/25

Name : David Archuletta (1-866-IDOLS-02)
Song Title : Another Day in Paradise
Judges Thoughts : (R) Its like watching one of your concerts. It was an interesting song choice but it was nice. A couple of pitch problems here and there. (P) You are perfectly wonderful for this competition. Keep going for it. (S) It wasn’t as good as last week. It getting a little bit gloomy here. You need to lighten up a little bit. You will probably be in the final two.
Slim’s Thoughts : David is still the one to beat. Love how he added the piano tonight. Score 21/25

Name : Danny Noriega (1-866-IDOLS-03)
Song Title : Tainted Love
Judges Thoughts : (R) It started rough. I loved the arrangement. I like the way you did it at the end. Vocally shy. (P) I love that you are this bright light in this competition. You are real. You have got great vocals. You are true to yourself. (S) I thought it was horrible. Absolutely useless. Hated the arrangement, hated the performance, hated the vocal.
Slim’s Thoughts : The tarmac at LAX is calling your name. Pack your bags. Score 10/25

Name : Dave Hernandez (1-866-IDOLS-04)
Song Title : It’s All Coming Back to Me No
Judges Thoughts : (R) Nice song song. A little sharp though. (P) I feel like you are getting into your groove. You are becoming a really good performer. I think you have some of the best vocals in here. (S) It wasn’t as good as last week but you have 100% secured a place next week.
Slim’s Thoughts : Love the song and thought David did quite well. Score 21/25

Name : Michael Johns (1-866-IDOLS-05)
Song Title : Don’t You Forget About Me
Judges Thoughts : (R) I loved that. It is so you. Very nicely done. (P) You are defing who you are. I loved hearing the strength in your low range. You have got to go all the way through. (S) I liked it, I didn’t love it. You have huge talent, you just haven’t connected with the right song. I really really like you and I think you will do well in this competition.
Slim’s Thoughts : Personally I think it was his best performance so far. Score 20/25

Name : David Cook (1-866-IDOLS-06)
Song Title : Hello
Judges Thoughts : (R) Great arrangement. Thought that could be a single and be a hit. (P) That was fabulous. That could be a hit today. (S) That was a very brave thing to do and I loved it. Good for you. It worked and I really hope we see you next week.
Slim’s Thoughts : Great performance. Another Top 12 contestant. Score 21/25

Name : Jason Castro (1-866-IDOLS-07)
Song Title : Hallelujah
Judges Thoughts : (R) Great degree of difficulty. You did a pretty good job. I give you props. (P) You made it sound so effortless. You are unique and you are recognizable. (S) I thought it was absolutely brilliant. One of my favorite performances of the night. You are getting better and better.
Slim’s Thoughts : Very moving. Jason just bought a Top 12 spot Score 20/25

Name : Chikeze Eze (1-866-IDOLS-08)
Song Title : All the Man(woman) that I Need
Judges Thoughts : (R) Interesting song choice. You did a good job. I thought it was really good. (P) Your vocals sound really good tonight. I am proud of you. (S) I don’t think that worked at all. You were ok in bits
Slim’s Thoughts : Not nearly as good as last week Score 17/25

Slim’s Top 3 : David Archuletta, David Hernandez, Jason Castro
Slim’s Bottom 3 : Luke Menard, Danny Noriega, Chikeze Eze
Picks to Go Home : Luke Menard, Danny Noriega

A much improved night all around for the guys. With the exception of Danny and Luke everyone did a great job. So how did your favorite do tonight? Will it be enough to put them in the Top 12? Leave some thoughts and lets discuss and don’t forget to tune in tomorrow night when the girls take the stage and bring us their songs from the 80′s

    What did Ryan say?

I am so tired of the he-she performer. Danny (Danielle?) needs to GO GO before I THROW THROW up! His flamboyant attitude and the online vids of his that keep showing up are nothing but a distraction. Why doesn’t Fox just have a Gay Idol show so those of us who find the in-your-face flamboyance sick and offensive don’t have to watch it. Between Danny and Paula last night, I turned off the show and watched a movie.

  3. ABB

you forgot the “nyuk, yuk, yuk” at the end!!

  4. If you put Paula in the lead-off judges seat, we would still be waiting for her first comment!

But remember we are talking about entertainment and reality television, both of which have nothing to do with the real world. If Randy and Paula actually gave constructive critism, then Simon would have nothing to do but agree with them. Right now it’s a little like the three Stooges, the first two set up the third for the punch line. Randy mumbles something about pitchy, dawg, bring it, and it was aiight, Paula breaks into her seal clap, mumbles something about looking stunning, then Simon delivers the death blow…WHAM!!! Sorry, but that’s just the way it works.

I couldn’t agree more about Paula. She’s not helping anyone by lying just to be the good guy. It’s starting to get nauseating.
Yeah, G-Puss… nauseating is the word I was groping for. She’s so obnoxious at times I feel like reaching out and slapping the TV tube. Oh well, I guess the producers like the comic relief that she provides. It just isn’t fair to the contestants. :em28:

I’m hoping Luke and Danny go home.
David A. is still my only favorite.
I’m hating Ryan more and more each week. He is not only disrespectful to Simon, but now David Archuletta. The comment he made to David to humiliate him was uncalled-for. Why a 34 year old man feels the need to make fun of a 17 year old contestant is beyond me. Especially one as nice as David, with no skeletons in his closet like a lot of the others have.
Why not make fun Of Danny Noreiga ?
    I thought so… :em76:

  12. chikin_noodlesoup

Michael Johns And David Cook are the revelations for this week…

Danny Noriega is far more worst than Sanjaya…

I’d rather be watching / hearing Sanjaya’s Performances than him…

Danny A. sounds a bit like Elliot Yamin…

Dave H is still my fave & my bet, besides Ramielle Malubay :em34:
But the lip licking thing is STRANGE. David Archulizard.
LOL, oh no, now the image of a sweet innocent cutie pie has been replaced with a prepubescent singing lizard. Please don’t let him start tilting his head to one side and then the other while licking his lips.

  14. tim.m

The boys have been dissapointing this year. David Cook has kicked it up a notch, and David A. and David H. are consistent every week, but the others are just BLAH, at best.

  15. I’ve been pretty surprised overall as the weeks have gone on.

Last night I thought David Archuleta was great (esp w/piano). But the lip licking thing is STRANGE. David Archulizard.
Then, David Cook, who I didn’t like at all at first, was awesome, and to make “Hello” good is almost impossible to me. But he did and the guitar really added to it.
Jason Castro was unexpectedly really great too. Those were my favorites.

Luke, I will really miss watching you, but I won’t miss hearing you sing. What were you thinking with that song? If you had to sing George Michael, there were other, better choices.

Finally, I really hope we don’t have to hear “She Bop” from Amanda tonight.

  16. cinderella5001

:em33: :em33: David A is absolutely adorable, plus the fact that he has the purest voice there That said (and he will continue to be my fave) he does need to pick songs that will demonstrate his wide range and power. I did like his song Tuesday, but am looking for him to do something a little faster and more upbeat He has a great chance of winning it all if he continues to pick good song choices.
He has the whole package, looks, talent, and personality.

  17. AA

So interesting how people hear and see things so differently. Michael Johns has been BRUTAL since Hollywood week. His strange dancing around stage and weird arm swaying have added to what I consider subpar singing. I think he has a legitimate shot to go home.

I’ll say it again: David Cook and Jason Castro are the only two that I’d pay money to see in concert.

Why was David Archuleta licking his lips every 15 seconds? So bizarre.

  18. Remember when Chris Richardson said that “Nasially” was a form of singing…well Danny Noriega thinks “sass” is a personality. It’s not!! It’s a cab ride to LAX and a plane ticket home. We can only hope.

  19. Feeza

    totally agree with u Slim…
Luke and Danny just did not bring it on this week….the others were just far far better than the both of them put together!!!

  20. ABB
David Cook took I song I hate and made me like it a lot. So, he gets major points for that.
I totally agree with you – although I liked the song to begin with. But what he did with it was unexpected and good. Randy said it could be a hit today – 100% agree with that as well. I didn’t like David C before, now he’s on my radar as one to watch.

Yep. Had to go to the bathroom, so I’ve lost some ground :em53:
Timm, you are cracking me up.

  22. Simper

Cheezy and Luke are dragging the rest down. Danny needs to pic better songs and the stripper is getting old to me.

  23. ImaginaryLiteFadesToBlack

I was so looking forward to tonight, because I am a child of the 80′s…..

Methinks Luke and Chikeze are going home….

Michael Johns was my favorite…He sang my Senior Class Song….If I close my eyes, he reminds me very much of Gavin Rossdale when he sang for Bush…I love the natural undertone of a tremor in his voice…not the put on vibratto some singers use when they can’t quite get the note, but the rich kind of quiver that Toby Keith has…I definitely see him in the Top 5…

David Cook was my second favorite. Not much of a Lionel Ritchie fan, but I liked David doing the song.

David Archuletta and Dave Hernandez were just okay to me…I liked David Archuletta on the piano, and I agree that perhaps he should have stayed there throughout the whole song…His standing up led me to believe there was going to be a climax of some kind, and it never quite came…Dave Hernandez had some definite pitch issues, though I enjoy him much more than I would have if it had actually been Celine Dion singing it….

Danny Noriega….Oh my….Ok, I have heard some pretty mean comments said about him, but I’m telling you….his flamboyance cracks me up…in a good way…I kept thinking, “You Go Boy” throughout most of the performance, and he made me laugh out loud during the judging…I hope he stays because he makes me laugh…in a good way…

Last but not least, I had never heard ” Hallelujah” until last summer, when Brian Melo, last year’s Canadian Idol winner chose it to sing as his last song when he was in the Top 2…When it atarted out, I wondered why he picked it as his last thing to be judged on because it seemed so slow and unfamiliar. However, that opinion changed quickly as his amazing voice, full of emotion and conviction rose and fell with each nuance…Toward the end, as the climatic Hallelujah crescendoed, he closed his eyes, threw his arms out wide, and tipped his head upward. I felt as though I had just witnessed a personal and beautiful moment between him and God, and I jumped up off the couch with tears in my eyes and clapped for him….I downloaded that clip and listen to it frequently…..Jason Castro did not even remotely move me to that extent…I think Simon was a little off when he said it was brilliant….It was okay…touching….but not brilliant….

Was it apparent to anyone else but me that Randy and Paula were on a mission to annoy the crap out of Simon? Could Paula have actually made her critiques any LONGER? She kept talking on and on and on….and then Randy would instigate for her to say more…I was waiting for smoke to come out of Simon’s ears, and boy was he crotchety as it was tonite….

See you all tomorrow night for the girls’ take on the 80′s!!!!

  24. Rob

“David Cook took I song I hate & made me like it a lot. So, he gets major points for that. ”

That was very cool. I love it when someone takes an “easy listening” song and gives it an edgy rock sound. My favorite of the night.

    :em69:

  25. sonyab

Oops forgot to mention that David Archuletta was boring again tonight. I don’t think he is my favorite anymore..

  26. sonyab

    People I loved tonight were

    David Cook

    Danny Norieaga

    Michael Johns

    Comments:

Michael Johns: Was awesome!!!! Dance baby dance!!! :) Why is it everytime I vote for him his phone isn’t busy? and then last week I couldn’t call the number..

Chickpeezie (Chickeze) He was all over the place.. Like Simon said he liked it in pieces.. So did I.

Luke Menard: I couldn’t put my finger on it. He sounded effeminate but I couldn’t find the right words until Simon said he sounded girly! YES! That’s the word! :)

Jason Castro: He sounded weak to me. Simon thought he was brilliant! I was surprised he said that. Wow!

Danny Noriega: I don’t know what it is.. :) When he sings he sounds sexy and hot. :) I find his attitude really funny. It cracks me up! The whatever to simon with the hand moose ROFL ROFL. He should be a comedian. Then the attitude with Ryan. ROFL.

Paula: No talking about colors tonight? :) ROFL

  27. weetam

David Cook took I song I hate & made me like it a lot. So, he gets major points for that. Jason Castro chose one of the best songs EVER written and he made the song proud. I especially liked his voice at the end, where he loses the note, it added pathos to the song. His performance was my favorite. Luke was awful Awful song. Danny was, as usual, annoying, but little girls like him. I think they see him as one of them, so he will stay. Michael disappointed me. He is beginning to develop a Jim Morrison posturing, which comes off fake. The boy wonder did Phil Collins. He loses points for that. But, he has a good voice and his personality is a major plus. David was better than I expected. Cheezy is ok, he just doesn’t stand out either way.

  28. tim.m

Thursday will indeed have a shocking elimination or two, which is what the producers are hoping for.
To me, the boys were average to mediocre tonight. Nice performances by David A., David Cook, and David H….but didn’t like Luke, Jason, or Michael. Hated Cheezy and Danny. Hope the girls fair better Wednesday.

  29. tmq800

Nice graphic change for this week, with the pictures alongside the judges’ comments. Keep it up for tomorrow too.

Oh, I predict a shocking elimination will happen on Thursday.

  33. Luke Menard turned in another bad performance tonight. He is a dead man walking into Thursday night’s elimination round.
While they praise Jason Castro for not playing the gutiar tonight, he made certain it was the primary insturment in his arrangement. He might be lost without that acoustic.
Danny Noriega, just go home. You can’t sing, you can’t dance, and you really don’t have a personality.
Chickeze, you are probably on the bubble. If Danny (Sanjaya) Noriega stays, then you’re probably going home.
David Hernandez has a very good voice, but he could be on the bubble as well, if Danny or Chickeze are not one of the one’s going home.
    Everyone else is safe.

  34. TLR

Timm are you going for the most posts record,,,hehe just kidding :em56:

  35. Jim

ABX you are so right. If Luke and Danny leave then I think this will be the best top 6 men ever.

  36. Queena

    Hi guys! Miss me? :em78:

I haven’t seen some of you in over a year! :em56: Life hasn’t permitted me to post or follow up on AI as often as I’d like (I totally missed audition, hollywood rounds, and the guys performance last week and I have yet to see any of the girls).

As for tonight though, definitely a big fan of David Archeleta — he is too cute for words. :em54: And after tonight, David Cook is officially on my radar. Jason’s performance was a bit lackluster for me though (not a huge fan of the song choice). Michael Johns didn’t do too bad either and is that Chikeze I see getting the pimp spot? Hm.

Good to see some of you again! :em02:

  37. ABX

Luke Menard: everything about that was horrible. He’s getting worse!
David Archuletta: a natural talent, but needs to step it up a notch next week.
Danny Noriega: his silly attitude doesn’t make up for a major lack of talent.
Dave Hernandez: this guy can sing, with good range and power.
Michael Johns: limited vocals, but smart choices, and tons of charisma.
David Cook: Brave choice, difficult song, easily the best performance tonight.
Jason Castro: Another brave choice, suberb pace and control. Excellent!
Chikeze Eze: I like it, but he needs to deliver on a more consistent basis.

Luke & Danny are very weak, and should rightfully be voted off. After they go, this competition could really heat up. The rest of these guys can really sing, so any weak performance from here on in, could result in a sad trip home.

  41. Jim

David Cook best by a mile.
Danny and Luke worst by 100 miles. Please give them the boot, America.
Does anyone else think that Michael Johns has become a disappointment? He is getting hard to listen to lately.
Jason was cool in a strange way – enjoyed that.

  42. so, interesting night, it was bookended by bad performances, but everything in the middle was at least good, if not great. here goes:

:em75: luke – just horrible, one of those times when i wish we were watching “showtime at the apollo”, b/c somebody could’ve given him the hook
:em69: Archuleta – great performance. odd song choice(but a song that i love), but he worked it out. showed some great vocal skills tonight. the piano was nice, i agree with simon, he should’ve stayed there. wonderful
Sanjaya II – like him or not, he didn’t do bad tonight. the arrangement was smokin’. his vocals were okay, he mixed in a little flavor. still the weakest in the competition(along with luke)
:em24: David Hernandez – awesome song choice, he owns whatever he sings. a few vocal flubs, but overall very good
:em20: Michael – he is a performer, he has that swagger onstage. cool song, awesome arrangement, bonus points for picking of “the” 80’2 songs. i’d like to see him around more
:em78: David Cook – stole the show tonight. wicked cool arrangement of that song. reminded me of daughtry tonight. could be a strong finisher
Castro – good song, one of the best ever written. he did a nice version. definitely had the buckley flavor on, so that was cool. i wasn’t as blown away as simon was, but the kid can do it
Chikese – not much good. vocally, there were some okay spots, but he’s seems too sure of himself, & its not helping his cause. it was an okay song, but he tried to sound to much like Luther, & he ain’t no Luther

overall, it was great. i see Luke & either Chikese or Danny going home. i want Danny to go just to get his silly ass out of the competition.

  43. Anne

P.S After Jason Castro’s performance…he is officially HOT!!!!! Alot of my girlfriends loved him from the beginning, but I wasn’t with them – till tonight! He was fabulous! But as someone said in the shoutbox, he’s very “Dude, where’s my car?” LOL!

  44. Anne

Tonight was sooo much better than I was expecting!
My least favs were: Luke Menard, Michael Johns (just didn’t like it), Danny Noriega (though I don’t hate him as much as most of the people on here do).
My favs were: David Archuleta, Jason Castro and David Hernandez
David Cook was way better than I was expecting (or hoping, for that matter – his hair is really distracting), and I’m permanently apathetic about Chikeze.
Going home in my opinion: Luke Menard and Danny Noriega.

  45. tim.m

    Best two performances:

    David Cook
    David Archuleta

    Cheeziest performance:

    Cheezy

  46. tim.m

Horrible song choice for Cheezy. Randy and Paula – wrong, Simon – right.

  47. tmq800

Jason Castro’s performance made me want to cry! :em35:

  48. tim.m

Paula….quit mimicking everything Randy says. Come up with something unique to say and you’ll exercise the few brain cells you have left. :em38:

  49. tim.m

Jason Castro was just okay with me. Didn’t really know the song, but I think he’ll get a ticket for the next round

  50. tim.m

David Cook nailed it! I loved the song and I liked the guitar thingy….
    Lionel would be proud :em50:

  51. tim.m

Michael Johns was just okay with me, but nothing to write home about :em53:

  52. tim.m

Best performance of the night….David Hernandez. Yes, better than David Archuleta

  53.
Hey Slim, Danny lives in Azusa. The taxi is waiting to take him home Thursday!
54. tim.m

I’ve lost every ounce of respect for Paula (not that I had any to begin with) after she gushed endlessly about Danny’s great performance. What the HeLLO?! Danny sucked more than a porn star and now I’m changing my mind about (maybe) wanting him on the Idol Tour this fall. :em54: :em72: :em38:

  57. tmq800

David A. sounded very good again!! Can’t wait for David Hernandez! With all the news about him this week, he will fuel this Idol scandal hotter!

  58. Kristina

He should have gone home about 2 weeks ago
