Blogged Live Via the East Coast Feed
With a shocker last week we have made it to the Top 7 and tonight we will enjoy the sounds of Mariah Carey as the contestants take to the stage to win your vote. I think it will be a tough night for the guys and a rather easy night for the girls. Then again it could just be a giant train wreck for everyone except Paula who will no doubt have some booze in her cup.
So who will make it through and who will be going home on Wednesday? Anything could happen. Ladies and Gents, sit back and relax. This is American Idol – The Top 7.
Don’t forget to leave your thoughts about tonights performances in a comment or even chat with us live on the new and improved shoutbox located on the sidebar. We always value your thoughts and opinions.
If you are in my Online Idol Pool you must get your picks in by 9pm EST on Wednesday night otherwise you will get the default computer picks.
Note : Show was blogged live via the East Coast Feed. You will get the contestants name, song title, judges comments, and my comments of each performance. Videos may happen tonight but most likely not till tomorrow in a separate post. Everything is after the jump.
How I Calculate Scores
5pts – Vocal Ability
5pts – Appearance
5pts – Song Choice
5pts – Personality
5pts – Stage Presence
Total is 25 pts.
Please remember that my scores may not be your scores. Just because I score someone high or low doesn’t mean you have to like or hate the performance. We all have different tastes and opinions. You are more than allowed to leave your thoughts in a comment but please don’t attack me because I scored your favorite different than you did.
Name : David Archuleta
Song Title : When You Believe
Judges Thoughts : (R) Dude you can sing anything. That was the bomb. (P) You made Mariah proud. (S) I thought it was very very good. You have set the benchmark.
Slim’s Thoughts : Not a bad start. Not my favorite David performance but we all know he will be the highest vote getter again tonight and of course will be safe again tomorrow night.
Slim’s Score : 20/25
Song Title : Without You
Judges Thoughts : (R) I liked that you challenged yourself. You have to believe and trust in yourself. It was pretty good. (P) I actually like that you shared some vocal restraint. (S) I really wanted you to sing this song. I don’t think you pulled it off.
Slim’s Thoughts : Personally I thought it was terrible. Another trip to the stools I predict.
Slim’s Score : 15/25
Song Title : Vanishing
Judges Thoughts : (R) You are bold but I gotta tell you that you did a good job on it all things considered. (P) This week you have been smart. You picked a song not many people now and you’re not compared to. Overall was unbelievably magical for you. (S) Technically it was very good. I am not sure I would have chosen a song though that not many people know.
Slim’s Thoughts : Another blah performance and another pick for the stools tomorrow night.
Slim’s Score : 15/25
Song Title : Hero
Judges Thoughts : (R) I was really digging it till the bridge. I appreciate the singer songwriter look. (P) Every ounce of you is authentic. I think this unplugged version was a very brave thing to do and you sounded really good. (S) I don’t think you had much choice doing other than what you did. It was like ordering a hamburger and only getting the bun. The vital ingredient was missing.
Slim’s Thoughts : Loved it. Brooke is back after a couple of rough weeks.
Slim’s Score : 21/25
Song Title : Forever
Judges Thoughts : (R) I didn’t think it was amazing but I gotta tell you that stepped up at the end. (P) It wasn’t just the end. You have this all worked out. Kristy Lee Cook, I am blown away. You could have a hit with that in country western. (S) You didn’t give me chills. You managed with what you could. It wasn’t ever going to be an advantage to you. It wasn’t great.
Slim’s Thoughts : Another solid Kristy performance. Personally I loved it and Kristy will bypass the stools again tomorrow heading directly into the Top 6. Sorry Kristy haters.
Slim’s Score : 22/25
Song Title : Always Be My Baby
Judges Thoughts : (R) You are ready to make an album. I thought that was the most brilliant performance yet. (P) Thats pretty awesome. That could be in a movie soundtrack right now. (S) It was like coming out of Karaoke hell into a breath of fresh air. It was original, it was daring and stood out by a mile.
Slim’s Thoughts : He made it his own. I wasn’t found if it but people will like.
Slim’s Score : 18/25
Song Title : I Don’t Wanna Cry
Judges Thoughts : (R) For me I didn’t love that. Weird beach luau. (P) I would love to be at that luau. You are in that zone. (S) I am going to have to agree with Paula. Not the best vocal but it was identified with you.
Slim’s Thoughts : Actually not to bad. Better than last week.
Slim’s Score : 20/25
Slim’s Top 2 : Brooke White, Kristy Lee Cook
Slim’s Bottom 2 : Carly Smithson, Syesha Mercado
Pick to Go Home : Syesha Mercado
I was expecting a possible train wreck tonight and it really wasn’t that bad. Of course I thought Kristy did awesome, which most will not agree with, and again tomorrow night she will get to bypass the stools and head directly to the Top 6. I have been wrong before but I don’t think I will be on this one. As for who is going home. Well it could be just about anyone from Syesha to Jason or even Carly. We will see tomorrow night.
Don’t forget to leave your thoughts in a comment. Please no bashing on the fact that I actually liked Kristy though. We all have our opinion.
:em59:
OK! my opinion from last nights performances are as followed:
I really don’t think that David Cooks performance was as great as the judges said, but it wasn’t terrible either. He sounded pitchy to me.
As for David Archuletas performance, i thought he did a wonderful job, but i really think he needs to step up and perform something other than a ballet. Like Simon told him a couple weeks ago, “it’s starting to get a bit boring”. David A. is my favorite contestant, so i am hoping that next weeks performance from him will be more active.
Kristy Lee did a wonderful job with her song choice. I agree with a comment that i was just reading here about how she sounded like Patsy Cline. I totally agree. I know she will be another Carrie Underwood.
Jason Castro was great! I love his style of music. He is very unique!
Brook White needs to step it up next week, if she doesn’t go home tonight.
Shyesha’s voice is very strong! I think she could go far. I don’t think that she should be the one going home tonight.
Carly Smithson was ok for me. I am not much of a fan of her for some reason. No! its not that she has a tattoo. There is just something about her voice that i don’t like.
I was not happy that Johns was sent home last week. I really liked him!! I know he will make it big.
As a Michael fan you are proabably aware of this but EW has a very nice 12 minute interview with him on line right now.

Thanks for the honest comments. I listened to the audio clips too. I thought Kristi did very well. And for the record- Patsy rocks!
At this point, I think the top 4 will be David C David A, Jason and Kristi.
I think Brooke will lose to Jason for the “folky” votes- not to mention the puppy love chick votes :em62:
I think Syesha has an excellent voice but she has a terrible following for whatever reason.
And Carly just hasn’t stepped up and really shown her real potential imo- what a shame.
As for me, my top guy was David C and top girl was Kristi- both still in.
Who’s da man?
:em78:
my bottom 3: brooke, carly and seysha
the one to go home: sysha

S’ok, Random, that poster obviously doesn’t appreciate that we each have different opinions. Sigh, in a perfect world, we should all be tolerant of each other’s differences. At the very least, folks should use some self-control and keep unpleasant words to themselves. Do the rest of us really need to hear such rants?!
IMO – Best to worst
David C

Sorry for the bad news, Tide. Hang in there. Last night was not too bad after all. Enjoy the performance videos!
Hey guys. So sorry I missed last night–it was a long, rough day. We got a call early yesterday morning that my husband’s grandfather died (and it was my birthday too). The funeral is in KY and we’re in AL of course and I’m only 6 days from my due date. Anyway, we spent the day dealing with all of that. :em26:
So, thank goodness for Slim! I’m going to catch up from last night so I can vote in the pool. Although, I have to say, I’m not looking forward to the performances. :em43:

i personally don’t think david c did that great
he just got a lot of praise
but i did feel bad for his family
i liked david a’s performance better (I’m 26 and not a mom)
the worst (just my opinion) was brooke she sounded really shaky
jason was interesting because he dosn’t have great vocals but was
entertaining
My favorites tonight were as follows
Kristy
David A
Jason
David C
Brook
Carly
Syesha
I will poll my class tomorrow to see how the younger set votes
I can understand ppl not being so into Cook’s performance but calling it bad? That’s almost asinine if you ask me..
No it is a matter of opinion, asinine is thinking everyone should have the same opinion as you
David Cook: original and hot. i loved it!
David Archuleta: again, david for the win! although a bit gayish but still very good.
Carly: it just wasnt good enough
Kristy Lee: i thought it was weak, OLD FASHIONED, there wasnt really so much to say except it was amatuerish. it shows how much she doesnt really deserve to stay. the notes were in tune but they were lowered.
oh i can hear MARIAH doing a bitch fit about how KLC ruined her song just like that beatles night
Could we please leave out name calling of a 17 year old Mormon boy. That was not deserved
David A. constantly bores me, it’s the same thing over and over. Nothing original. He’s a vocalist not an artist. Carly – Her higher register is annoying. Brooke, same old same. The only 2 who are TRUE artists are David C. and Jason. They always do something different. Different in the best sense possible. They don’t merely sing the songs they understand them. They connect.
I thought this was a singing competition… so isn’t that what a vocalist does… sing?
David A: Boy pulled out all the stops tonight, growl, falsetto, runs, glory notes AND leather pants. He’s amazing. I thought the judges were rather reserved in their praise actually. Looked like he regained some of the lost confidence. YES!
Carly: It kiills me that Simon never gives her props. She was better than good.
Syesha: She’s always sharp, as in pitchy, when she sings. She can really sing, but I find it hard to listen to her because of that.
Brooke: Oh, if she hadn’t gotten flustered in the middle. She started rushing and not focusing. Otherwise, loved it.
Kristy: She’s definitely better that Kelly Pickler, but I had to agree with Simon that some parts were a bit whiny.
David C: Honestly guys, I listened over and over to see what all the slobbering was about. He was very out of tune on all but his signature high notes, which he does the same every week. I completely got Billie Jean, he was brilliant, but the over-pimping for this was difficult to take. I would think the judges will be embarrassed if they listen back tomorrow.
Jason: This may have been my favorite Jason. Mellow, dreamy . .
Brooke, FTW! It was great tonight. At this point, I don’t necessarily care if America agrees with me because I think she’ll have a great career no matter when she leaves. I’m sure there are labels that are anxious to get her. Yeah!
Although Mariah night could’ve been bad, I have to agree with Slim that it was much better than the train wreck I had anticipated. I think/hope that either KLC or Seyesha will go, and hoping that my 2 hours of voting for Brooke saves her for another week. Even though I think she’ll make it just fine on the outside, I love seeing her perform on TV.
See ya’ll for results tomorrow.

Thoughts on the group tonight:
David A: thought the song sounded very good but for whatever reason, he is losing his luster for me. I think I’m getting bored with him. :em31:
Carly: without a doubt, Carly has been the most disappointing for me for a fews weeks now. She obviously has a strong voice but none of her songs have done anything for me lately. I also think she seems to be shouting more than just really belting out the notes. It’s too bad because I think she could really sound great. :em29:
Syesha: despite what seems to be a common consensus, I think Syesha has an excellent voice. I also think her tone sounded beautiful tonight. To me, she sounded the truist to Mariah’s style for sure and she is way underrated. I would say she was definately in the top 3 tonight. What can I say, I am a rogue seed. :em21:
Brooke: I like Brooke and I liked the song but it didn’t blow me away. At this point, they almost need to be phenomonal to move on and I don’t think it was. I still enjoyed listening to it though. It was good enough to keep her around imo. :em69:
Kristi: again, like Syesha, I thought she showed excellent range in her voice and did a fine job. Certainly much better than the typical bashers portray. I think she is also very underrated. You have to give her credit though- as some others came out strong and are now struggling to impress, she has ramped up as time goes on. :em23:
David C: I always like David’s songs and I liked this one too. I like how he can put his own rock twist on a tune in his own creative way. He’s still my pick and has been since the top 12 began. :em78:
Jason: wrapping up the girls tonight… :em62:
hehehe just kidding Angie. I actually liked his song tonight. I don’t think he has the same raw vocal talent as some of the others but I’ll man up and admit that I enjoyed it enough to say he should stay another week.
When I look back at all the songs, one person stands out for me clearly as the one who did not step up- unfortunately, it was Carly. :em28:
I pretty much liked everyone else tonight.
Later,
Rob
I thought KLC’s song sounded very old fashioned, 50′s style. She sang it well, but I hated the arrangement.

Actually I would agree in that KLC had a very Patsy Cline quality. I would disagree in that I don’t know how the hell you can go wrong with Patsy.

===============================
They sound like cars ROFL. :)
I had to vote for Jason tonight. Damn, he swoons me every time!
D. Cook had me in tears… His brother, weak from chemo, at the audience… It was really touching.
As for the women I have to disagree with the judges, I think Carly was excellent.
my top 3 tonight: david c, jason and brooke. then david a, kristy, carly and syesha. i’d say going home tomorrow night will be either carly or syesha. all in all, i thought tonight went pretty well, i really like david cook’s take on the song…i was a bit nervous before hand. i also really enjoyed jason’s and brooke’s. i know brooke lost some of her nerve toward the end of her song, but you can still feel the connection she has when she plays that piano and sings her heart out. i thought david a was just ok, and carly just didn’t quite do it for me. i was expecting more. with syesha, she has a beautiful voice, but we just can’t really see or feel her connection with the songs. well, for me, as long as jason makes it to next week, i’ll be happy. :)
At the end of the day these types of theme nights are deeply unfair. Whether you can sing Mariah Carey (or Dolly Parton, Neil Diamond etc.) songs is totally irrelevant as to whether you can be a succesful pop star or have a long term career as a singer or are the best performer/singer on that stage. What’s next? Lou Reed night? Madonna night? Iggy Pop maybe? Neil Young night? Carly Simon night? None of these people would have won Idol. As Madonna said she wouldn’t have made it to Hollywood. Thank you! I say it every stinkin’ year until I’m blue in the face. I don’t CARE if any of them can sing Mariah Carey, or Dolly, or Neil Diamond. Give them a chance to really sing what they love and they will all shine!!

Totally agree again. In MY opinion, David A. has the best voice. I really don’t care for the type of singing David C. sings. Too raspy, screeching, out of tune to me. MY OPINION . Never was a rocker fan.

That’s actually all my point was! Let’s move on…better hide your best crystal, everyone, if Mariah is performing tomorrow night! Wonder what group song they are going to kill us with?
What IS up with Paula? I can’t wait til the day where there is a big expose on what exactly was happening behind the scenes on AI all this time…what Paula’s under the influence of, what Simon REALLY whispers in her ear…now that’ll be good!
On to the performances:
David A – his is the only one I would really listen to again. He just has a very nice voice and sings very well. Haters can hate, but truth is truth.
Carly – I love Carly but didn’t like her tonight. I didn’t like how long her low range singing was…it just didn’t work. However, I would automatically up her score by two just for covering up the tattoos!
Syesha – She sang quite well…it was screechy for me, but that’s how alot of Mariah’s music is. The problem is I don’t remember Syesha’s performances because she doesn’t seem to connect to any of them.
Brooke – Hmmm…it was better than I thought it would be, but towards the end she really did start doubting herself. She’s not as good technically as Syesha, but she’s alot more likeable – and no one can doubt how much she puts herself out there and really feels the song.
Kristy – she did quite well tonight! A little too much of the twangy stuff, but I thought it was pretty good.
David C – Geez louise, am I the only one who really didn’t like that at all?? I thought it was truly awful. I don’t like David C on the best of days, but I can still normally (grudgingly) admit when I think he’s done a good performance. I thought his performance was a nightmare. Practically all sung in one note until the end, which is the only thing that saved him. Didn’t like it at all.
Jason Castro – I love me some Jason C! He is just soooo cute. In a naughtier way than David A. *Ahem!* Sorry about that. I was quite worried for him, but he did quite well. Again, he just has a really pleasant kind of voice. Yeah, we all know he’s not the strongest singer…so what? I’m sure I don’t need to remind you that nor was Blake last season. But he got better and made it to the final 2! I don’t see Jason getting quite so far, but I do believe he has a justifiable place in the Top 6 next week. I hope! VOTE VOTE VOTE!
You hit this right on the nail.
I TOTALLY agree with you !
Jason has done it again. His rendition of “I Don’t Wanna Cry” is another “can’t get it out of my head ” song” that you wake up humming! I pray he’s still around for Neil Diamond week!

Thank you, Amber! You get my point! I agree with what you said about Syesha earlier, too…she just doesn’t come off as super-humble, you know?

On to the performances:
David A – his is the only one I would really listen to again. He just has a very nice voice and sings very well. Haters can hate, but truth is truth.

Oooh la la, and claws come out! I am not saying Archie is the best, the finest voice, the ANYthing, I’m saying he has a pleasant voice – he has talent. Whether you like him or not (and it is understandable when people don’t – he is quite syrupy), if you aim at being even partially unbiased you should be able to admit that the boy does have talent. It doesn’t have to appeal to you (like my situation with David Cook), but there is talent there regardless.
David A. constantly bores me, it’s the same thing over and over.

My opinion only but, tonight made it really clear that in terms of talent it is David Cook and then everybody else.
Top 3 Cook, Cook and Castro.
Bottom 3 White :em61: Mercado, Archuleta
America’s Bottom 3: White; Mercado; Smithson
Going Home: Mercado
I really missed Michael and I read that Carly said it wasn’t the same without him (or words to that effect)
For me, I thought Carly did great, so did David Cook…I think David A has a fine voice but that asthma sounding breathing makes me uncomfortable…he sounds like he has a tight chest.. actually, I am not really a fan but I thought Kristy didn’t do a bad job at all..Syesha was OK.
I cant connect with Brooke and I haven’t heard Jason yet…
Sigh…wishing with my whole heart MJ was still on
I love it when you post the judges comments!! Thanks so much!
I can understand ppl not being so into Cook’s performance but calling it bad? That’s almost asinine if you ask me..
David Cook’s arrangement of that song was weird for me. Again – JMO.
I’m not the only one tonight! Yaaay! :em20:
I hope! VOTE VOTE VOTE!
yea, Amber! You pretty much said everything else I didn’t. Amber for the win!! LOL :em78:
Thanks! Finally, someone agrees with me :em32:
I couldn’t be more surprised! It was a fairly interesting night, there were great performances. Didn’t like Jason (as usual), and didn’t love Archie… However, I trully believe Syesha will be the one going home.
It’s a shame, she’s got such a wonderful voice, and sings technically great… but she just doesn’t deliver, she never connects with the songs, and never makes anyone feel anything. What a waste of talent! Maybe she’s just too nervous, but that´s no excuse.
Honestly, I really think the problem with Syesha is that she thinks she is hot crap. Just my opinion…
Simple..I thought Kristy was better. We all have an opinion. Thats why we all have different tastes in music and buy different CD’s. Maybe you thought David C was better than Kristy. I didn’t. Again my opinion. If I am allowed to have one.
I agree with Slim. My top 2 today were KLC and Brooke. Carly third, David C. fourth (it wasn’t that great, IMO, but he made it his own and that’s got a lot of merit). David A. fifth (sorry, Arch-angels), Syesha sixth, and mop-head last…
i have to say that i didn’t like jason’s performance whatsoever and i couldn’t help but to laugh while listening to carly but only because i keep thinking about “ken lee” on youtube.
loved both davids! yay! :em70:
Dude how you going to give Cook’s performance a 18 ? His performance was AMAZING. How you going to give kristy lee cook a higher score? you can’t be serious man. And this is also coming from a guy that doesn’t even like David Cook all that much..
I didn’t really like any of the performances with the exception of David Archuleta. Sorry! I think David A. did a great job! :em64:
The others…eh…I was a bit disappointed by Brooke since I’ve always really liked her, but she didn’t do much tonight in my opinion.
I was also rooting for Jason Castro (since I want him to stay in the running longer!) and David Cook, but Jason was just so-so and David Cook’s arrangement of that song was weird for me. Again – JMO.
I’m glad his brother could be there tonight, though. Best wishes…

Hmm….I really liked David Cook’s performance, but once I listened to it a second time, I didn’t really like it at all.
David A was AWESOME!!!!!!! :em78: :em78: :em70: :em78: I love that kid!
I just don’t get Carly or Syesha. Yes, they both sang well, but I felt no emotion from either one.
I didn’t like Brooke. IMO that song needs more than just a piano, & she kept rushing it.
KLC, eh…
Well, David C definitely changed that song! Not sure if I liked it, it really had a stalker vibe :em51: Is that someone else’s cover?? I don’t think it is, but if it is, we’ll never hear the end of it :em41: Seriously, that kind of gave me the creeps, but I’m not saying that as a bad thing. Maybe I just never paid attention to the lyrics before?
Jason was ok for me. I don’t know if it was a good closing performance.
How weird that the guys did so good on Mariah night? Didn’t expect that…
The people who I loved tonight were
Kristi Lee Cook
David Cook
Comments:
Wow what a boring night! :em41:
Brooke: My question is.. Where is the beef? :em62:
David Cook: He was boring in the beginning but he picked it up and he was awesome!! I just tryed voting for him once and it was busy! Ahhhh so good to have a busy signal. With Mikey Johns there was none. :( DAVID’S BROTHER WAS IN THE AUDIENCE!!!! :) David was crying. :em61:
Jason Caster oil: Not bad.. It was okay. I wasn’t WOWED but it was okay. :)
WHERE IS THE BEEEEEEEEEEEEEF!!!!?! ROFL ROFL
You know, I listened to Syesha and she sang good as always – however, her performance sucked – as always. Something I wouldn’t want to hear again, you know.
So today I finally found out what’s going on – her singing doesn’t macth the lyrics! It’s like she’s singing very well the song, it’s just that it’s not the one we’re listening to.
And about the first four contestants – I’m getting bored. David A bored me, Carly was again – you know – I just didn’t feel it, Syesha – as always, and Brooke – well you know – aggrr… let me put it like this: I GET THE FEELING THEY’RE ALL PLAYING IT SAFE! BUT THEY’RE NOT, cause I can hear the big risks they all take. But again, it’s like the same CD over and over and over and over…. …again.
I was loving Brooke until she made a couple of mistakes (one time her voice cracked and then she hit the wrong note on the piano). But maybe because the rest of the song sounded so nice she might be safe, who knows. So far everyone has been great.
I just can’t believe Brooke did it again! She gave me the goose-bumps! GOD! SHE’S BACK!!! I totally thought she was in danger, but after that song, she’s just back in the game!!!
Brooke was very great for me i love it :em78: :em78:
I thought Syesha did well tonight. I’m not a fan, but she didn’t screech this time, and even though there were those runs, she did okay.
I think Carly did a fine job… Hopefully this will secure her a spot next week.
I absolutely dislike perf of david A :em26:
I absolutely loved David A’s performance!
and cross your fingers and toes that this is a good night!
Cue the comments!!
