Official Season 7 Winner : David Cook

Wait. What? This is the finale? Tonight? Noooo. It can’t be! Didn’t we just pick Top 24? What if I don’t want it to be the end? How ya like them apples?

But, seriously, I really can’t believe this is the end of Season 7. Time has flown by despite all the fillerific results shows. I, for one, think this has been a really great season and it’s being topped off with a pretty dang awesome final 2. Even though neither David was my favorite this season, I have liked them all along. While everyone else argues over who is the best and who should have won, I’ll be happy with the outcome no matter the winner.

Join me, won’t you, as I keep you updated on what goes down during the finale show. It promises to be a good one! So, here we go, guys! For the last time this season… THIS is American Idol!

We open with Ryan’s voice-over and Archie and Cookie are standing, facing each other center stage dressed all in white. The lights come up and we see the packed house! Ryan’s in another boring suit and he gives us the low-down on the voting. 97 and a half million votes came in and one David got 56% of the vote with the other getting..wait for it..44%. How’s that for doing the math?

Mikalah Gordon is in Kansas City with Cookie’s fans and Matt Rogers (still as cute as ever) is in Salt Lake City with the Arch Angels.

And the Top 12 are out to sing “Get Ready” all dressed in white and poor Michael Johns and Jason look as swooningly awkward as ever. The group sounds pretty good as theme park performances go. As they sing, the SYTYCD dancers dance all around them. Great way to start the show!

On a funny I-love-Jason note, as the rest held their pose at the end of the song, he practically ran off stage then had to get back into pose. Man, I love that kid!

Next up is Cookie singing a duet! “Hero” from Spider Man. There is lots of gray and dark gray in their outfits. Cookie is featured for the first verse and Archie on the second. Hey, I like this! See, Archie! You CAN sing outside of the box. Pretty good harmonizing. Great job, guys! Can they BOTH win??

Ryan reminds the Davids of their meetings with “Guru Pitka” which turns out to be Michael Myers in his new movie which I knew nothing about before. Archie and Cookie went for a visit for advice from the Guru. He advised Cookie to rid himself of his 90s facial hair. Guru also tells Archie he will soon grow hair in weird and wonderful places. Really it was a funny clip! And Guru Pitka makes an appearance on stage with Ryan. He chats with the judges and gets a smile and wink from Simon.

The Guru predicts that the winner will be a US citizen and will be named David. I think the funniest thing was his tagline which was “Mariska Hargitay” who is on Law & Order SVU. Well **I** thought it was funny!

Syesha comes out to sing “Waiting For You” with…Seal! She looks really pretty tonight and Seal, though not a good looking man, is very very sexy! Look at those guns! Not sure I loved the song, but it was a great performance.

JASON! He’s up next to sing “Hallelujah.” Oh wow. Someone get me a fan. He is VERY swoonalicious tonight. Look at those beautiful eyes! Goosebumps. I got goosebumps. Don’t bother with the Jason hating ’cause I AIN’T gonna hear it tonight!

Side note: The theme must be GRAY because everyone is in some shade of gray so far.

The Ford commercial is “Let The Good Times Roll” and it features bloopers from all the other commercials from this season. Ryan presents both Davids with keys to a Ford Escape Hybrid. They aren’t that surprised because, duh! We all knew they’d get a car.

Ok, forget that whole gray thing for a minute because the Top 6 ladies come out to sing a Donna Summer medley and they are all in red. Ok, Slim, I’m admitting this just for you (and Doc and Drillah) Kristy sounded pretty good. (ouch, that hurt.) Carly sounded great. Amanda. Amanda was awful. I’m sorry, but I never claimed that I would be unbiased or nice tonight. Brooke looked pretty and sang well, but girl can NOT dance. But, Ryan TRIES to dance like the SYTYCD dancers who are on the stage as Donna sings. Donna can still sing, that’s for sure! Took me right back to 1978!

Side note: who watches SNL? Remember the “Simmah Down Now” skit?? Summer Donna? Suuummer Donnna? Simmah down now!!

Carly and MICHAEL(!) sing “The Letter” together. Oh. My. GAWD. That boy is so freakin’ fine! He sounds like…like..buttah. I need to sit down before my knees give out. Wait. I AM sitting down. My only complaint? The music and the back-up singers are way too loud! Oh my, the front row is totally getting an upskirt shot of Carly. Yikes! Whew. I need a ciggy after THAT performance. (Michael’s, not Carly’s.)
OK, wait, my second compmlaint? Carly SCREAMED her way through that. But, my Michael was da bomb dawg!

Jimmy Kimmel comes out to do some stand-up. I love him because he starts off with a great Sanjaya joke! He also shows an AWESOME montage of Simon’s descriptive words. That was great!

The Top 6 guys sing! “Summer of ’69.” Michael Johns is KILLING me with his awesome tonight! He sounds scrumptious! They boys sing a little bit of “Heaven” then introduce Bryan Adams. Pretty cool. He’s less annoying than some of the ‘special guest stars’ in the past. I actually like him a lot! Boy still has it after all this time. You go, Bryan!

And we see Jordin announcing the “American Idol Experience” which is coming soon to DisneyWorld.

David Cook performs “Sharp Dressed Man” with ZZTop. Huh. Who knew those guys were still alive..er..I mean..around? hee hee As my boy Billy said in the shoutbox, this is the SHIZNIT! See? See? THIS is what we would get if the Idols got to choose songs which they can be AWESOME at singing! I hate TPTB and their frickin’ theme nights!

We revisit Kansas City and the Nanny..er..Mikalah Gordon who speaks with Cookie’s elementary music teacher. Cute.

Brooke is up next with Graham Nash singing “Teach Your Children.” And it. Is. Awesome. Acoustic. Brooke looks gorgeous and she’s barefoot. How cute is she?

OMG! Cookie was just featured in a Guitar Hero commercial in the role of Tom Cruise from the famous Risky Business dancing-in-his-underwear scene! That was a total surprise and pretty awesome. (could someone get me a Thesaurus? I can’t stop using the word ‘awesome!’)

Oh good. I can take a breather while the Jonas Brothers perform. They have no appeal for me, but my 6 year old LOVES them and knows every word to their song. At least she is happy right now.

Ryan has a random grandma named Pat on stage with him as he introduces clips of the worst auditions from this season. I won’t even try to recap them here, but believe me, you can’t forget the people they are showing. Aaand now I am uncomfortable as they bring out Renaldo, the “I Am Your Brudda” guy. Please, make it stop. Oh, oh, oh..and it gets worse as the marching band from USC comes out to accompany him! Then Paula gets up to dance with him on stage. OK, this is the worst moment of the night. NOTHING can be worse than this.

One Republic appears to sing “Apologize.” Archie comes out to sing with them and it is AWESOME! I love it! Again, what we COULD have heard had they been allowed to pick songs they can see REALLY REALLY WELL!

This is the best finale show EVER in the history of all American Idol finale shows!! (except for that Renaldo thing)

Back to Matt Rogers in Salt Lake City and he’s talking to Archie’s grandfathers and they are adorable just like Archie! Cute!

Jordin sings her latest single (of which I can’t remember the name) and she sounds good to me despite all the talk over in the shoutbox. She looks great. Well, except for that gold LAME! The heck? I need to take a minute to give some props to those back-up singers! Girls can SANG! (though too loudly at times, but that is the sound guy’s fault!)

“Auditions from 1972′ of Gladys Knight and the Pipps. It IS Gladys from 1972, but The Pipps are actually Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. (who happen to have a movie coming out soon.) When I heard about this earlier, I thought it would be stupid but it’s actually funny.

Time for Carrie Underwood to sing “Last Name.” Gorgeous as always, but a strange frock. Kind of a white tuxedo dress with frilly sleeves and a long scarf thingie running from wrist to wrist behind her. But she’s showing leg and that means Slim is a happy, happy man right now.

Awesome! The same Guitar Hero commercial but this time featuring Archie. I love seeing him having fun like that. He always seems nervous to me. That was cute!

Top 12 again! That means..Michael! Johns. But the girls, all in black, are first out singing “Faith” by George Michael. Again, Amanda is the suck. OMG! SWOON! Michael and the guys, in black suits, are singing, “Father Figure!” Michael! Jason! Michael! George Michael should be showing up anytime now. The gang sings “Freedom” and then introduces George Michael. What a surprise! ha ha Remember back before we admitted that George Michael was gay and all of us 80s girls wanted to have his little tanned and blazing-white-toothed babies?? I KNOW I wasn’t the only one! Anyway, he’s singing “Praying for Time” or is it “Pray for Time?” and not really all that well. I think his monitor was not working in the beginning. Paula is crying. I don’t know. That just didn’t sound like George Michael to me. He’ll be on tour in America for the first time in 17 years, soon. So says Ryan.

Before we get to results, I must mention Randy’s red jacket. I am pretty sure it came from Captain Kangaroo’s closet. (thank you, Drillah, for helping me with that!) Paula looked pretty in red and Simon, I think he had on black or something. You know Simon, it’s always black, gray or white for him.

Ok, this is it! The moment we’ve waited for so patiently, or not so patiently at times. After 5 months, our new American Idol is…

David Cook!!

Cookie is emotional as he should be and Ryan gives him a moment to speak. He basically says thank you and then sings the winning coronation song which is “Time of My Life.”

I’ll say it again. Best. Finale. Show. EVAH!

And that’s it. Season 7 comes to a close. I feel a little empty already. I have to say thank you to Slim for letting me add my little bit of crazy to this blog every week. I love ya, Slim! You are the best blog admin around. Also, a shout out to my fellow mods and favorite regulars in the shoutbox. You guys are the best idol family a girl could ask for and I love you all!

Be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments!

Until next YEAR! I am Queen Angie and I am out.

On another note, and I can’t believe I didn’t blog this last night, but what was up with that creepy whispered “NAKED” by David Hernandez during ‘Father Figure?’ That kinda gave me the willies.

Me too!! I think I actually went   and :dizzy: when he did that.

Oh, and another thought, the more I see George Michael from last night, the more…ill..he looks and sounds. It was quite off-putting for me.

Yeah, he looked sick or something. Those sunglasses!! Cripes!!

And Joyce? I said “80s girls!” Soooo..being that you are QUITE a bit OLDER than me, (hee hee **ducks and runs**), I didn’t expect that you DID want GMs babies.

You BETTER duck and run!! ;) . But wait… I posted that in the shoutbox after you were gone, didn’t I? What’d you do? Go back and read where I talked to myself in the shoutbox for 2 hours last night???

I love, loved, loved the show. Best finale ever.

Slim…I so enjoyed this site. Haven’t commented much however I was here everyday. Always something new and fun. Thank you.

Angie, I think you are just wonderful. Love your sense of humor, girlfriend.
Actually I just rewatched it and it looks like Jason may have gotten either burned by or spooked by the pyrotechnics. I hope it was just spooked. Either way it was really close.
Yup, not burned but warmed up at least! Cooked Idol (even this year) would not have been a good thing.

Considering he’s a (former?) male stripper I was surprised they gave him that line at all. MJ was probably the only finalist who could pull it off with out either creepiness (DH) or silliness (JC).

  5. As with any two hour results show, there were moments that I wasn’t thrilled about, but overall, yes, probably the best Grand Finale show ever.

  6. I just wanted to say, I really and truly wasn’t trying to be a bitch about Amanda. I guess there is just a fine line between bashing and giving opinion.

I suppose I should have said, Amanda is not pleasing to my ear and left it at that. :)

As much as others have been complaining about last night’s show, I still say, best finale EVER! Sure, there were a couple of weird moments, but I went into it excited and ready to be entertained and I was!! That finale is why I love this show!

Its over…. I think a loss by either of the two finalists would have been surprising on some level. Cook is the more rounded performer but Archuleta has the better tone. Both guys seem genuine, which made watching them more pleasurable. As energizing as the final moment announcement was, the rest of the show stunk over all. From the stupid plugs for the ridiculous waste of film about the guru, to the late night comedian who wasted so much oxygen. From the spastic camera work during dance numbers to Seacrest’s attempt at something similar to a gran mal seizure, Fox needs to rethink trying to make a two hour show around a 10 second announcement. If that is the best the entertainment field has to offer, then we need an American Idol to find some new comedians, new actors (sorry Michael, but your character is an idiot), and new background techies. Good luck Davids; you guys both have amazing opportunities ahead of you.

  8. randomx6

I think Ai could make a ton of $ if they released a clip file of the greatest dances from season 7. It would, of course star Brooke (the awkard one) and Jason (the goofy one) w/ special guest star Ryan Seacrest (the oy do I not understand what a downbeat is one), but everyone had some funny dance moments.

Some of us do like her.

    OKAY?
Sorry to offend you, Random. I do try not to “bash” others, but I guess I did when I echoed BC’s sentiments. I don’t care for Amanda’s singing style much – just not a hard rocker/ Janis Joplin fan anyway – but what really bothers me about her is that she never seems to look happy on the Idol stage. I hope she gets something out of the publicity and the tour, but part of me wonders if she regrets it. Anyhoo, sorry for upsetting you. Like Angie said, some of us felt the same way about the way Jason got picked on too. Whatever.
AND David Archuleta. Some people just got carried away bashing him, and STILL bashing him.
I LOVED not only David A., but Jason as well.
It’s funny how some think “their” taste in music is the only “good” taste. Sorry, but no one is anymore qualified than anyone else to make that statement—music is subjective. I think both Davids have talent—just completely different styles. And that goes for Jason as well.

I think (based on interviews) that she regrets the group numbers but not the rest of it. Heck, she is playing the Whiskey A Go Go. At one point I read somewhere that she said she didn’t like cleaning bedpans but it was part of LPN training so you do what you have to do.

  11. rachel

It’s good to know that not only did BOTH David’s get a new Ford Escape Hybrid, but BOTH David’s each got a recording contract ! So fans of both David’s will be happy to know that there WILL be a CD of their favorite out no matter what !!

Hey, now you know how me, Amy and Bon felt every single week while so many others, (not saying YOU), bashed Jason. I always defended him, but I also know/knew that not everyone loved him like I do.

I don’t apologize for my opinion that Amanda sounded awful last night, but, if you like her then like her and don’t worry about what **I** or anyone else thinks.
Hey Driller,

Not sure about that rehab thang. Maybe that iox etcs just the way 60+ year old women look on TV when they haven’t bothered to have all the work and Botox etc? Just a thought

  16. DrillerAA

It was a very good show last night. There were enough highlights to make up for any lowlights last night. I wasn’t thrilled with with Seal. Donna Summer looked like she just came from rehab and George Michael hasn’t been on tour in 17 years for a reason. On the other hand the Carly/Michael Johns duet was very good. With a little work on their harmony it could be great. The “Cookie Monster” fronting ZZ Top was the highlight of the first hour. They could have done it again as the coronation performance after DC was crowned Idol and it would have be a perfect end to the show. Carrie comes out and shows everyone what separates the Superstars from the wannabe’s. The girl can SANG!!!! All in all, it was a great season. Yes Michael Johns should have made the final four or three, and yes, the hour long results shows were too long, but the final performance show and the Grand Finale last night were outstanding.
I saw a series on the beginnings of TV on PBS this winter and one of interviewees said “if you can get people at home screaming the answer at their TVs, you’ve got a runaway train”. And when DC`won, I leapt and screeched like the Steelers superbowl win. Hokeyness and all—and GAWD was it hokey at times—they have a winning formula.

Biggest mistake America made by a mile–Michael Johns early cut. Comparable to Daughtry’s early exit. My God he sounded good tonight.

Chikeze. The dude SANG tonight, dawg! Great voice and helluva nice guy–would like to see him do well.

This week’s Fantasia: Amanda. Did her dog get run over in front of the theater??? She scowled the whole time and sounded like hell. Maybe she she was  ?
Amen – you pretty much echoed my thoughts. As I was waiting for the final announcement to make the official statement over in the shoutbox (It was all typed in except for the last name), I just hollered as I wrote “Cook”!!! hahaha, and I would have done the same had it been Archuleta, too! I was just excited, period! What a great finale show.

  20. CB

Amazing…speechless…awestruck. The finale was ‘da BOMB’!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THAT is the reason I watch. As bad as last season’s finale was it looks like Fox took the criticism they got last year & went back to what worked for season 5. My only disagreement with the live blogging was Renaldo. That was great, sort of like the singing cowboys of season 5. It was wonderful to see the top 12 multiple times (even Amanda!). As long as Fox remembers the raison d’etra of the show they’ll continue to have a long & successful run. It has been and always will be about the kids.

    Oh yeah – GO DC!

  21. cuteyabby

yehey! finally the american voted the right one to be the next American Idol!

We were just reminded why Amanda got kicked off!!! She stunk the place up!

I have been reading this blog for about two years and this year, started to comment…I have really enjoyed sharing and reading the thoughts and “2 cents” of others. I have had as good a time on this blog as I have had watching the show. Thanks to Angie and Slim and all the others I don’t know yet, for making this site so much fun. I hope I get to know some of you regulars next year..I just can’t wait. Angie your “blow by blow” is outstanding…

wow david cook won!!! i actually thought that archie will win cause the judges really gave him great comments last night!!! well personally, even though i think that cook doesn’t really need to win idol to become successful, based on talent alone, i think he does deserve to win the entire thing! i mean, cook is versatile, has a great voice and is a freakin rocker!!!
I have to say that the REAL stars seem to stand out tonight. The Idols who really looked like professionals, like they really belonged there, were Seyesha, Carly, Brooke, KLC, Michael, and David Cook. They had great stage presence, wonderful vocals, and looked like they were having fun. The others looked awkward and out of place. Especially Amanda–YIKES! She looked like some local slacker teenage punk compared to the other ladies up there. I honestly think she did the bare minimum to get by, to fulfill the contractual obligations, but she hated being there.

And Archie next to Cook?! There’s no comparison. Cook is so alive, so intense, so present. Archie looks tired, overwhelmed, and in over his head. No real expression behind that pretty, smiling face.

I am so happy that Cook won! He really deserves it. I so hope that the AI contract doesn’t ruin him or force him into music styles that are not right for him. He has so much potential to be a real musician, really relevant today, but I hope Idol actually allows it.
Wow, Cook won, no need to keep tearing down his competition. I don’t see David A as anything but a very talented young man that has worked so very hard to make it to #2 out of thousands of hopefuls

Thankyou Slim you are so gracious, thankyou all moderators and every one behind the scenes who made this blog so much fun. It has been a lot of laughs for me and made the show so much more exciting to watch. Because of this blog I will probably buy 8 cds of the top contestants. So many opinions, comments, and posted thoughts from all of you helped me to remember how much I love music and to see how great and talented these kids really are. I feel I owe you all a debt, this has been a wonderful and enriching experience for me.
Cook winning was the frosting on the cake.
Everyone be safe and take care. Thanks again for the experience. Lee

I just want to say it was soooo sweet we got a lot of Michael love there tonight!!! I only heard him (no TV) but he sounded so fine and I could pick out his voice everytime he sang…Bryan Adams is a fave and to hear Michael sing first…swoon…I think I may have to rethink my bad thoughts about TPTB…they finally listened to the fans!!!! Go Michael!!!! On board for the long haul!!!

  31. Anne

I barely know where to start with tonight, so I’ll start with the best:
    1. Michael Johns was so hot and sounded sooo good I could barely contain myself
    2. Jason could not have looked more swoonalicious if he tried – he is soooo hott!

Regarding the results: I don’t know what to think. David Archuleta sounded times better than David Cook last night (DC sounded more like himself tonight, actually), imo. But they are both great, and both have such a massive following that once they strike while the iron is hot they’ll have fantastic careers!

Anyhoo, good luck to both the Davids and to all the other contestants (well, everyone but Amanda, who could not have appeared to be any less interested in the night’s proceedings) – they were all great!

  32. Doc shanks

The soaring high note of David Cook at the end says it all. The high point of the show, though. other than rejoicing that the right guy won, was the Gladys Knight sequence with “the Pips.” Amazing effects, and the facial expressions said it all. This is comic genius. Thanks guys.

  33. Glamourpuss

I am ECSTATIC! Absolutely great season, great show! YAYAYAYAYAYAYAY

Hehe! “I am Your Brudda” just happens to be my ringtone! That’s awesome… but when my phone rings I kind of go through a short segment of embarrassment.

  38. Dale

Are you kidding? This is the best idol finale ever partially BECAUSE of the Renaldo thing. Holy crap.

  39. Dale

  40. Drew

David Cook in a commercial, really? Gah, stupid work!

  41. Doc shanks

I wonder if the cameraman realized that the shot he was taking of Bryan Adams when Paula stood up to dance was from the perspective that it looked like Paula was giving him a b***j**?

  42. Drew

  43. Serena

    56% and 44%? That’s quite a lot of difference…

  44. Alyssa

Aww, I love Jason and Michael so much. I can’t wait until it starts on the westcoast! =] Thanks so much for the blog!

  45. Jake

Actually I just rewatched it and it looks like Jason may have gotten either burned by or spooked by the pyrotechnics. I hope it was just spooked. Either way it was really close.
