Judges Thoughts : (R)You are such a classic stylist. Congrats, dude. (S)This is another Joshua moment. (J)We struggled with picking a song for you. You are such a throwback and I love that. You brought down the house, again.
Queen Angie’s Score and non-objective OPINION :7 1/2 of 10 I found it to be a little lacking in energy, or lacking in Joshua. Good song choice for Joshua. I like his lower register and I enjoyed the performance until he diva’d it and started that screechy stuff. Sure, the original may have had some of that, (or maybe not. I can’t remember) but I don’t like it from ANYBODY. Anyway, pretty good, but lacking something. Definitely NOT standing-O worthy.

Elise and Hee Jun and Shannon and Hollie and Jeremy are all in the audience. That was too many “ands.” Sorry.

Judges Thoughts : (R)Yo, I mean, that was absolutely beautiful. We tell people never to do Mariah, but I’m tellin’ you what, that was one of the best Mariah songs sung on TV. (S)When you sing, you make people hang on your every note. I hope you get used to encores. (J)Hard song. You did it so beautifully and you did it in your own way.
Queen Angie’s Score and non-objective OPINION:7 1/2 of 10. Her breath control seemed off. Lots of noisy breaths. I do like her softer, sweeter sound much more than her JHud/Beyonce sound.

Judges Thoughts : (R)Wow, Steven. That was poetic. Listen, man. We were just at the Phil Phillips concert, y’all. Yo, you are so in the zone. You have been in the zone since day one. You take the challenge. Another incredible performance by you. You are who y ou are and we love it!(S)Can you believe this guy? When you’re facing the sun, the shadows fall behind you. I’m hoping you write your own songs. You could be a new-age Boss. You’ve got that character. (J)You’re very funny, to me. We picked the song to see if you could do the melody and you have to mess with it. It was great!
Queen Angie’s Score and non-objective OPINION:9/10 The crowd is LOUD!! It was great! I love his sound. It’s what I listen to. I don’t know if there is anything he would do that I wouldn’t like. Great song phor Phil phor sure.

Randy says Joshua has a slight edge in round 1. JLo says Phil. Steven says Phil. (I think.) Or maybe not. He’s on the fence. Who knows?

Round 2–Contestant’s Choice

Joshua says the most memorable thing about his hometown visit was selling out the arena. Louisana sent beads, boas and glasses back to the judges. Cute! Footage of Josh’s visit home. He was nervous on the plane. I’m feeling him on that one! He marvels at all the cop cars and enjoys a crawfish boil. He goes to church and it’s awesome. There’s a tiny baby with a “Team Josh” shirt on. Adorbs! Joshua takes his niece to ride in the parade with him. Floats, marching bands, crazy people, baby kissing, high school visit, autograph signing and a sold out concert! What a weekend he had!

Judges Thoughts : (R)Everything you sing should touch you and mean something to you. You dig deep into the lyric and meaning. That was another stellar performance. Brilliant. (S)Another thank you God moment. Each time you sing you take it over the top because you are that good. (J)It was a pull back and control kind of song for you. It’s a beautiful thing.
Queen Angie’s Score and non-objective OPINION:7 1/2 of 10. It was nice, if not boring leading up to the scream. It ended well, though. Overall, the song just didn’t do anything for me, and I like Josh!

Jessica says going home was amazing. She says “like” a lot. Like the 16 year old she is. She’s cute! She gets to leave in a helicopter. (That would have been a HELL no for me!) She lands in the stadium where she auditioned. Radio interview, packed concert, chanting (from the fans) then to her home. Parade through town, high school visit, Mayor’s declaration of Jessica Sanchez Day, USS Midway Museum, singing for her dad and all the men there in the Navy. Her family is adorable, like her.

Judges Thoughts : (R)You’re choosing some tough songs. It started a little slow for me but you delivered a big moment. (S)You just took a great song and made it greater.Beautiful. (J)You do not know what a big deal that is (coming from Steven). Really good job, baby.
Queen Angie’s Score and non-objective OPINION:7 1/2 of 10. Seemed ultra laid back. Better than the first song, but still not blow-me-away great. A couple of runs I didn’t like, but overall, it lacked the JHud/Beyonce vibe and I dig that. I do still like her softer sound, for sure. Also, Steven is LYING.

Phil says it was amazing going back home and seeing all the places he missed. Footage of his visit. Phil’s pretty excited on the plane with butterflies in his stomach. Tons of people behind the airport fences screaming for Phil. Back to his dad’s pawn shop where a crazy lady grabs him and practically pulls his arm off. Phil Sr. cries, is full of pride and is adorable. He makes Phil Jr tear up, even. Phil’s mom is just as adorable and excited. Phil is overwhelmed riding in the parade and is overcome with emotion. It’s pretty awesome.

Judges Thoughts : (R)You guys didn’t love that? Wow. This is weird. People say we always agree. I didn’t like it either. I wanted a bigger look from you now. It was OK. (S)It wasn’t over the top. It’s who you are. (J)It wasn’t the wow performance. There’s still one more to go. It was good.
Queen Angie’s Score and non-objective OPINION:9/10. That was pure sexiness. I love the soft, non-growly way he sang that. Don’t get me wrong, I love his gravelly sound that he uses sometimes, but he was doing a Rob Thomas song and he didn’t need it. Totally Phil. Totally great! Joyce, in the shoutbox, reminded me of what I thought in the beginning. It reminded me of Rob Thomas singing, “Smooth!” Thanks, Joyce!!

Round 3–Jimmy’s Choice

Joshua gets his song from Jimmy via text while riding in a limo. Jimmy says Joshua could use another moment so he chose, No More Drama by Mary J Blige.

Queen Angie’s Score and non-objective OPINION:6/10. I didn’t like it at all. Too much of the screaming caterwauling. I can’t stand it. But, I do like Josh, generally. No standing O? What?

Jessica gets her phone delivered in a big box. Jimmy chose “I’ll Be There” by The Jackson 5. Jimmy says something about the song showing youth, but also grown up something or other.

Queen Angie’s Score and non-objective OPINION:7 1/2 of 10. She did nothing at all with the song. While I don’t want her to add runs all over the place, I just thought this was stale. Also, guess what? I don’t hate Jessica! ha

Phil’s phone arrives at his home via a big box, too. Jimmy recorded his song choice title on the phone. “We’ve Got Tonight” by Bob Seger. Jimmy says he wanted to find a song that sort of addressed his female fans as well as male.

Judges Thoughts : (R)The perfect song at the perfect time and your best performance on the show EVER. (what??) You had a giant moment. You just showed us you can sisng the melody. He’s in it to win it! He’s ready! (S)Beautiful. When you first came out here you sang like you just didn’t give a sh**. Like you just didn’t care. You just showed you’ve got all that passion wrapped up inside you. You nailed it. (J)I know one thing, there are 20 million girls out there who wish you were singing that song to them. Just like a lullaby. Beautiful.
Queen Angie’s Score and non-objective OPINION:8/10. Poor Phil and his extra hand when he doesn’t have his guitar. So cute. He looks super nervous. I wanted him to add a little more grit. I also think Jimmy saddled him with a very simplistic song. I am super looking forward to this studio! The judges gave that an undeserved standing O. They are a little cray cray, tonight. But, hey, I’ll take it.
