Contestant : Michael Lynche
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-01
Song Title : “This Is A Man’s Man’s World”
Judges Thoughts : (R) I feel like right now this season is starting to get rolling. Dawg I have got to give it to you. R&B star. (E) I have liked everyone song choice so far. That was the one to beat. The way to start off the night. (K) I did not get it until tonight. You went from being a singer to someone who could be a great artist. I am feeling it. (S) From a pussycat to a lion in one week. The right kind of song for you. It suited you and it didn’t sound dated. Your best performance in the competition.
Slim’s Score : A-

Contestant : Jon Park
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-02
Song Title : “Gravity” by John Mayer
Judges Thoughts : (R) That was your vibe but you didn’t bring anything new to it. It was flat and there was some pitch problems. (E) It was the right song choice. You got into it more than in rehearsal. Feel the song a tiny bit more. (K) Way better than last week. I lack the connection with you. I don’t always believe it. You need to let loose. You are a little bit safe. (S) I think Purple Haze may get their lead singer back this week. I struggle with the believability. In 20 minutes time we will forget that performance.
Slim’s Score : B-

Contestant : Casey James
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-03
Song Title : “I Don’t Want To Be”
Judges Thoughts : (R) I love you channeling like Hendrix. I don’t know if you did the best vocal but this is the type of record I would make with you. (E) You can’t go wrong with the song. I love your look and I love you sound. You need to move more on the stage. I want you to perform more. (K) The cougar is a fan but tonight you took 2 steps backwards. The notes were off on the bottom and you didn’t take the song to another level. Still a fan though. (S) I am kind of with Kara. This week you turned into someone you would see in any bar in America. You don’t have the grit in your voice to make that work.
Slim’s Score : C

Contestant : Alex Lambert
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-04
Song Title : “Everybody Knows”
Judges Thoughts : (R) Such an improvement over last week. You found your own niche a little bit. Way legit tonight. (E) Someone took the unripe banana and put it in a paper bag. So much better than last week. You have such a great voice. You have a unique style. (K) You have an incredible recording tone. You will learn how to use it. Great improvement. (S) That was a million times better than last week. You should only be nervous if you are useless and you are not.
Slim’s Score : C

Contestant : Todrick Hall
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-05
Song Title : “What’s Love Got To Do With It”
Judges Thoughts : (R) The falsetto run at the end was hot. I didn’t love this. Sing a nice song and just sing it. (E) Sing and move. Use your strength, your a dancer. I don’t think it was the right song. That song didn’t help you get any votes. (K) We all like you. When you started moving, it got better. I don’t get it, what happened to Todrick. (S) Todrick, move but don’t sing. This is not working out at all for you.
Slim’s Score : D-

Contestant : Jermaine Sellers
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-06
Song Title : “What’s Going On”
Judges Thoughts : (R) Better than last week. It was so close but so far. It just wasn’t a great performance. Another tough song to sing. You needed to pull it back more. (E) I love your style but it just didn’t work for me. You pushed to hard again. (K) You are hitting some crazy notes but you are doing to much. Pull back and look for the meaning of the song. It feels forced. (S) We’re frustrated. You water down the songs. No one can take you seriously as an artist.
Slim’s Score : C-

Contestant : Andrew Garcia
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-07
Song Title : “You Give Me Something”
Judges Thoughts : (R) Honestly, that wasn’t the vibe for you. It was pitchy all over the place. I didn’t get it. (E) I thought there were a couple of little pitch problems but I liked it. I am still a huge fan and I thought you were really good. (K) Since your Paula song it has been straight down. You have to surprise us. You played it too safe. We need another big surprise. (S) You are lacking something. Not choosing the right song again is a problem. It was just ok and you are better than ok.
Slim’s Score : C

Contestant : Aaron Kelly
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-08
Song Title : “My Girl”
Judges Thoughts : (R) I didn’t know if I was going to like this. Dude you can really sing. That was 200% better than last week. (E) A whole lot more confidence. You sing well but the song is a bit forgettable. You do have a great voice. (K) I really liked it and I like you. You are consistent. You have control. You are doing better and better. (S) I didn’t like the song. It was all over the place. You went backwards. You have to work out what kind of artist you want to be. The arrangement was too old fashioned.
Slim’s Score : A-

Contestant : Tim Urban
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-09
Song Title : “Come On Get Higher”
Judges Thoughts : (R) I didn’t get it. It was very karaoke for me. Some pitch problems, nothing jumped out. (E) You should act. You should be on Glee. Girls would love you. If you act, yo have it made. (K) I liked the song choice but you didn’t make it your own. You look the part, you play the part but it’s not all there yet. (S) I think that was a much improvement from last week. You picked a young song. You were more relevant than the other singers. I am impressed with your performance, your attitude and work ethic.
Slim’s Score : D

Contestant : Lee DeWyze
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-10
Song Title : “Lips Of An Angel”
Judges Thoughts : (R) Bold Move. I liked it. I am a huge fan of yours. A couple of pitch problems but I liked it. (E) A couple of little pitch problems but it didn’t matter cause it came out as a great performance. It was great. (K) I thought it was a big improvement from last week. Some pitch problems still this week but I could hear you on the radio. Your look is commercial. (S) Raise your shoulders. Vocally you are head and shoulders above everyone else. You may be the one to beat.
Slim’s Score : B-

A much better night tonight than last week for the guys. I still can’t say I have a favorite guy. If I had to pick I would go with Aaron Kelly but I am still not a huge fan of even him.

Slim’s Picks To Depart

  • Todrick Hall

  • Jermaine Sellers

And yes I realize I gave Tim Urban an awful score and didn’t pick him to depart but the powers of VFTW will keep him around. I would like him gone but it won’t happen this week. Hopefully soon. He isn’t Top 12 material.

So how did your favorite fair tonight? Leave your thoughts in a comment and tune in tomorrow night as I blog the girls performances live.

Tim did very good this weeek . im very impressed with his pitch, and he held a note for long it made him alot better, i wish i could talk to him just once :)

    @ Rob:

-As much as I despise the boytoy flirting, I thought that Casey did better than they gave him credit for and liked the ax.
    ===================================
What ax? Is that what is in his box!?!?! :)

  3. Rob

I thought the guys did better this week except for 2-3 weak performances.

-As much as I despise the boytoy flirting, I thought that Casey did better than they gave him credit for and liked the ax.

-I think Alex could be a dark horse later if he gets more comfortable up there.

-Andrew needs to get back to playing his hip songs again.

    - Thought Michael’s bluesy tune was cool.

    - Aaron’s got a ton of vocal talent but would like to see him get away from the cutsy vibe. Might be difficult considering his age.

    - I think Todrick, Jermain or Tim are going home this week.

    - I still like Lee’s style of singing the best. He doesn’t have as much pure vocal talent as some of the others but I like the tone. I think he needs a guitar up there though.

Lastly, the judges are driving me absolutely nuts with their completely inconsistent advise. One second they’re saying not to change up a great song. The next moment, they’re saying, you gotta make the song your own. Getting sick of that crap already

  4. sonya

Oh one other thing about Casey James, what is in his box?!!?! ROFL! I wanna know so I hope he isn’t voted off! :)

  5. sonya

    @ rachel:

Exactly. And IMO, Tim cannot sing anywhere near as well as the GLEE cast can.
    ================================
Yeah I agree with that. :)

  6. randomx6

    @ angelbaby49:
I really miss Miss Paula and I miss talent!

Ellen (ohh honey it’s not that bad) and Kara (Simi, loooook at me aren’t I fun) channeling various aspects of Paula is not cutting it!

  7. angelbaby49

I am not sure what it is but I am just not getting into this season. I like Aaron Kelly, and Big Mike so far as my favorite, but I miss Paula!

  8. rachel

    @ sonya:
Exactly. And IMO, Tim cannot sing anywhere near as well as the GLEE cast can.

  9. romer

Thnx for the info, randomx6. I bet they hear the band better, we hear the vocals better. Bye all.

  10. sonya

    @ rachel:

And to compare Tim to a GLEE singer ?
Ellen, you MUST be kidding !!!!!!!!!!!!!
    =============================
No she was telling him that he should BE on Glee! She asked him if he can act. :) Cus on Glee people sing and dance.

  11. randomx6

    @ romer:
Ellen says they don’t hear the same thing we do. She says what we hear is worse than what they hear.

  12. randomx6

Aaron and Lee are headed for top 6 if they keep going at this rate. Tim Pecs will do fine this week as will Texas Country Hair guitar boy and I’m 3000 miles away while your having my baby guy. Todrick and John are in deep trouble. God man will be safe this week.

  13. sonya

The people who I am voting for tonight are

    Casey James

    Aaron Kelly

    Comments:

Casey: Casey!! If you keep doing what you are doing then you will be one of my favorites! THAT WAS AN AWESOME PERFORMANCE!! :)

Aaron Kelly: YEAH!!!!!! That was fantastic! He has got the confidence now!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOO! :)

Big Mike: Awww dude!! That wasn’t your best. Tonight was just Zzzzzzzzz. Get it together! You can do it!

Jermaine Sellers: He is rockin the onesie! ROFL! He is so funny! ROFL!

Lee DeWyze: Yikes. He was very nasally.. And be one with the mic Lee!!! :) Don’t be afraid of it.

Simon on Tim Urban: Wow Simon liked it. I thought he wasn’t going to.. Very suprising.

  14. romer

I still think the judges don’t hear the same thing we do at home. This puts them at a disadvantage. I wonder if they have strong monitors at the podium.

  15. romer

Agree with rachel that Lee has that something — star quality — in his voice.

  16. Leila

I think John Park and Toddrick Hall are in trouble. I think they’re both good, but they were boring/forgettable.

  17. tmq800

Lee, Alex, Michael and Tim all improved from last week, but I should be worried about Aaron. Casey and Andrew did OK. Todrick, Jermaine, and John are all in danger of going home this week.

  18. Leila

Lee was doing well until he started screaming on the chorus! That was a little painful. I liked him better last week, but again, this is a more “popular” song and just like Tim Urban it will make him less forgettable than the previous contestants.

  19. rachel

Mike and Lee were my favorites tonight. But Lee just has that “something” in his voice that makes him stand out. And I can CLEARLY see him selling the most albums.

  20. angie

Lee—I am so nervous waiting for him. I really like him and want him to do well!

Oh, yay! He did a great job! I don’t know why, but Lee is one of my favorites! To be cliche and cheesy…he seems to really feel the music. (lord…did I just say that??) Anyway, LOVE him!

  21. Leila

Simon and Randy love when they pick “current” songs.

  22. Leila

Tim’s voice is pretty mediocre and he was losing his breath in the beginning, but the popular song and his looks will get him lots of votes.

  23. rachel

Aaron is a cutie, as is Tim. But sooner or later, they will both be leaving IMO.
And to compare Tim to a GLEE singer ?
Ellen, you MUST be kidding !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. angie

Tim– Another cutie! So many of them this season.
Good song choice for him. Especially the chorus. His verses sounded a little shaky, but I think he’s pretty good singer. Ellen was right, he doesn’t have a whole heck of a lot of stage presence but that can certainly be improved.

I like Tim, and would love him to stay over Jermaine. So glad Simon saw something in him.

  25. Leila

Aaron sounded good, as long as you like that type of teeny-country-Disney type vocals. He was much more confident than last week.

  26. romer

Aaron sounded like karaoke. I agree with Simon. The nice guy is only 16 though.

  27. angie

Aaron– What a cute kid, but I’m just not a huge fan of his singing. His rendition of My Girl wasn’t bad, nor was it fabulous. He hit some flat notes, but also hit some good ones. He was just a’ight for me, dawg.

  28. Leila

Garcia’s vocals were good, the band ruined it.

  29. ABB

I like Jermaine’s voice, but I gotta say I’m disappointed he’s got an attitude. Give me a break. Dude, you are a gift from God, but you aren’t God’s gift to ME.

  30. rachel

I really love Andrew Garcia ! Wrong song choice, though. But I LOVE his voice. I don’t think he’s going anywhere this week.

  31. ABB

I like Andrew Garcia, but his singing of this song was a little too flat or something. I wanted something… more.

  32. angie

Andrew Garcia– James Morrison “You Give Me Somethin”

ha ha..love that he’s a break dancer!

Oh bummer..I wanted him to be way better this week. I didn’t love the song choice at all. It just wasn’t his best. BUT..I want him to stay!! Especially over Jermaine!!

  33. Leila

Jermaine was much better than Mike Lynch and yet he gets ripped by the judges.

  34. rachel

“Kewpie Doll hair.” Now THAT’S funny !!
I think Jermaine and Todrick are both in trouble this week…so far.

  35. angie

Jermaine Sellers– If nothing else, it was worth it to see him in that “onesie.” ha ha ha
What’s with the kewpie doll hair?

“What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye…all over the place and just not good. Yikes. He should have gone last week. But, he’s a funny guy! lol

  36. romer

Todrick not dynamic enought to do the Godmother-of-Soul stuff (or was Aretha the Godmother of Soul?)….

  37. rachel

I did not care for Todrick this week. He may be going home IMO.

  38. tmq800

Good job for Alex. Better than last week.

  39. angie

Todrick– I liked his Kelly change-up last week. This week’s Tina Turner was very good. I was afraid it would be really boring, but I liked it. He can work the stage and audience for sure. Apparently, I see Todrick differently than the judges and everyone else. I enjoy him, though he is not my favorite and I don’t think he will win. I hate that he is getting so slammed by the judges, but this is AI.

  40. ABB

Todrick should have blown that song out of the water instead of slo-mo-ing it.

  41. tyler.

i love the tone to alex lambert’s voice. i can see what the judges were saying. he has the raw talent, and if he improves, i can see him going far.

  42. Leila

Alex did pretty good… I wonder how that angry lady Mary Powers feels right now!

  43. rachel

    @ angie:

Totally agree, Angie. He’s much better. And I don’t think he’s going anywhere this week.

  44. angie

Alex Lambert–definitely an improvement over last week. He really does have a nice voice and with a little more confidence and power, he could do a lot with it.

  45. ABB

I still don’t know how Alex Lambert made it this far. No richness or strength to his voice (IMO). And for someone who was soo nervous last week, sitting on a stool didn’t do him any favors.

  46. romer

Ditto for me on Casey. Stock rock band front man. And the little nervous vibrato is irritating…..and unnecessary.

  47. Leila

Casey will sail through after this… Nothing remarkable, but it was fun and energetic. His fan base is solid.

  48. rachel

Had to agree with Kara and Simon on Casey James. I did not like it.
    But he’s still a cutie!

  49. angie

Casey James– Here’s hoping they NEVER curl his hair like the tragedy that was Bucky’s hair way back when.

Anyway, Casey’s cute as a button but the vibrato is so distracting, I can’t get past it. Other people do it, I know, but I just notice it so much more with Casey for some reason.

The guitar was a cool touch, but it was just OK for me.

  50. Leila

I think Park did pretty good…

  51. rachel

John Park was better than last week. Nothing special, though.

  52. romer

    Ellen De liked his “look”.

  53. ABB

I think I’m going to have to agree with Simon – in about 15 minutes I will have forgotten all about John Park. Too bad, I liked his audition. Doesn’t help that I don’t like John Mayer (the kiss and tell guy, ugh), so my opinion is slightly colored by that association.

  54. angie

John Park–just OK for me, though better than last week. He’s got potential but I don’t think it will show enough for him to stay for the long haul. He’s kind of boring to me. Seems like a nice guy, though.

  55. ABB

Liked Mike for the first time tonight. Great stage presence.
Too bad John Park had to come on after Mike… we went from best-dressed to just got out of bed…

  56. rachel

WOW ! What a voice Big Mike has ! AND he’s likeable !

  57. romer

Judges loved him. Shows ya what I know.

  58. angie

    Big Mike–Awww…yeah…
Yes yes yes yes yes!!! I LOVE Big Mike! He worked that stage..he had stage presence…charisma..he was sexy! AND…he can SANG! Also, loved him working his lips! lol

  59. romer

Not dynamic enough to do Godfather-of-Soul stuff. But who is?

  60. angie

Cue the comments..and the testosterone! It’s time for the boys!
