Live Blog Begins Here

Contestant : Siobhan Magnus
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-01
Song Title : Through The Fire
Judges Thoughts : (R) Big song. Didn’t quite catch on pitch wise. It was all over the place. I like the outfit though. Wasn’t your best. (E) I agree with that. I love you but it wasn’t your best performance. (K) I think you got nervous up there. Parts worked but other parts weren’t there. Every performer has an off night. (S) It sounded like you were running a marathon and singing while out of breath. It was all over the place. You look all over the place.
Slim’s Score : (C-) An awful start to the night. A bit pitchy in places and quite boring but Siobhan won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

Contestant : Casey James
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-02
Song Title : Hold On I’m Coming
Judges Thoughts : (R) This was another hot night for you. You stayed in your element. A perfect selection for you. (E) You are always good. I loved your vocals. It felt a little generic. You sang it great but that is a safe zone for you. (K) You have more range. I want to see you go back to an acoustic guitar. (S) It was your strongest week you have had so far. It showed a completely different side of you as an artist.
Slim’s Score : (C) A virgin idol song. I think I know why. It sucked. Sorry Casey but it was pretty bad. Don’t worry there will be worse to come tonight. You aren’t going home yet.

Contestant : Michael Lynche
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-03
Song Title : Ready for Love
Judges Thoughts : (R) I like the guitar. Beautiful ballad. You are in the zone. I am loving every performance. (E) That was beautiful. I loved it. (K) I have never heard that song but you did an incredible job with it. It was tasteful and lovely. (S) This is probably the first time I can actually take you seriously as an artist. You were original. You did a terrific job.
Slim’s Score : (B+) I absolutely hate slow songs on American Idol. Usually they are boring and they put me to sleep. Michael on the other hand was great. An awesome vocal, a great rendition. Top 5 is right around the corner.

Contestant : Didi Benami
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-04
Song Title : What Becomes of a Broken Heart
Judges Thoughts : (R) I love this song but the whole performance flat lined for me. It just wasn’t great. I didn’t get it. (E) It was dramatic. I love your voice and I am a fan but it was way dramatic. (K) It’s overdone. This is very confusing. It leaves me puzzled. (S) It was like swimming in jelly. It was so over the top, so old fashioned, it just didn’t do it. You have lost your way.
Slim’s Score : (C-) Didi looked great but sounded flat. Nothing anyone will remember in the morning.

Contestant : Tim Urban
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-05
Song Title : Sweet Love
Judges Thoughts : (R) It felt pedestrian not American Idol. At least you sang in tune. It had no vibe, no swag. You can put a little grease on it. (E) I am going to call you adorable. Man I kept asking why you picked that song. You were singing like you were sneaking in a bedroom. (K) It was like broadway at times, Vegas at times. You took the soul out of the song. I don’t understand why you keep doing this. (S) It doesn’t matter what we say. Inappropriate song. Your going to smile and the audience will vote for you and you will be here next week.
Slim’s Score : (D-) VFTW is going to have their hands full keeping Tim on the show after that performance. The deer in headlights look and awful vocal should send him home finally.

Contestant : Andrew Garcia
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-06
Song Title : Forever
Judges Thoughts : (R) Andrew is back. I love the outfit. It is your best performance for me in a long time. (E) That was an amazing strong performance. (K) That is one giant leap in the right direction. (S) Miles better than what we have heard from you over the past couple of weeks but as a person you come over as very boring. You have to show some personality.
Slim’s Score : (A) I actually liked it a lot. I can’t wait for the studio as this is surely a song I will be adding to my play list. There is nothing like acoustic R&B for cocktail hour. Sorry Alan, Andrew isn’t going home this week.

Contestant : Katie Stevens
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-07
Song Title : Chain of Fools
Judges Thoughts : (R) The performance was disconnected but it was one of the best vocals of the night. The song started rough. You need to connect it all together. (E) I thought the vocals were great. I wish the song had been a little bit more current. I want you to make the song young. (K) You found where you belong. This was one of your best vocal performances. You still need to make it young. (S) It was pretty good. It was robotic and you came over as quite cold. You have to make it fun.
Slim’s Score : (C-) Katie needed to pull off her best performance ever to keep herself out of the bottom 3 this week and she didn’t. It wasn’t her worst performance which may keep her from heading home but it was still pretty bad and will end up as bottom 3.

Contestant : Lee DeWyze
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-08
Song Title : Treat Her Like A Lady
Judges Thoughts : (R) Unbelievable. Best I have heard you in weeks. That was the bomb. (E) Now the night has started. Best of the night. (K) It could be on your record. Amazing. (S) I have always believed in you. This was the night your life may have changed forever.
Slim’s Score : (A-) Lee seems to be growing on me each week. At this point he is the only guy I could see winning. Great performance.

Contestant : Crystal Bowersox
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-09
Song Title : Midnight Train to Georgia
Judges Thoughts : (R) I love the outfit. I like how you switched it up. Another great performance. (E) You are always great. You are in it to win it. (K) I am so glad you took that risk. I can’t wait to see what you do next. (S) Your song choice was sensational. Your vocals were great. The backup vocals made it old fashioned. Don’t let this process suck the identity out of you.
Slim’s Score : (A) Another Crystal slam dunk. Can’t wait for the studio. See you in the finals for sure.

Contestant : Aaron Kelly
Voting Number : 1-866-idols-10
Song Title : Aint no Sunshine
Judges Thoughts : (R) Started a little rough but it worked itself out a bit. I was alright. (E) I thought it was a good song choice and a good job. (K) I liked it. I wasn’t in love with it but I liked it. (S) I am not jumping out of my chair. It wasn’t as good as last week but there is no chance you will be leaving the competition.
Slim’s Score : (B) Hate the hair but it was a good close to the night. Not as good as a couple of contestants but no where near the train wreck of Tim and Katie.

Please keep in mind that my bottom 3 and who I pick to go home may not reflect my scores of tonight. This is my opinion on the season overall and what I think will happen tomorrow night.

Slim’s Bottom 3

  • Tim Urban

  • Katie Stevens
  • Didi Benami

“I am reminded of the Adam fanatics”

    Me too Amy

It seems every year people can’t like who they like without others getting nasty about it. I find it amazing that one can’t just like who they like and have others just respect the fact that we all have different tastes in music

  2. rachel

    @ Terilynn:

  3. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and enjoyment of the music is in the ear of the listener…

    BTW ROTFL @ Angie… I also am Hot S–t LOL :w00t:

  4. angie

    @ Dean:

I think the puzzling thing is…why are you so angry?

Frankly, when I watch Idol, I don’t need perfect, innovative, unique, indie, mainstream, new, old, or any other adjective one can think of, here. Give me someone with a voice I enjoy and a voice which is pleasing to ME. Because..it’s ALL about ME when I watch. Make ME happy! Lee, Crystal, Mike and some of others at different times, are pleasing to ME. Sing for ME in a way that **I** like and it’s all good.

By the way, me liking Crystal doesn’t make me cool and hot sh*t. That comes naturally.

  5. Dean

Well if you compare Adam to the one who won, he was so superior it’s not even funny.

  6. ABB

I am reminded of the Adam fanatics of last season who simply could not fathom why everybody else could not also completely agree with them that he was the be all and end all of the Idol Season.

  7. Dean

Oh and I won’t bother talking to you either.

  8. Dean

    @ randomx6:
I think she’s highly derivative. In the 9 years I’ve been watching Idol–she is by far the most overpraised talent–not that she’s not good, she is. But she’s an 8 let’s say not a 10 and doesn’t merit the gushing, gushing comments from those “judges”. And I find it revolting that people think they’re hot sh-t and “cool” to fall all over her beacuse they think she’s counterculture. What the hell is she doing on Idol then, which is about as mainsteam as you can get. I think she will probably win but although I find her talented, I can’t stand her appearance, her magic carpet on stage–or the fact that she gets 2 or 3 bites of the apple by playing guitar and conveniently avoids any comments about stage presence. Two letters come to my brain every time I see her–one’s a B and one’s an O.

  9. angie

    @ Dean:

Dean, if I had meant “innovative” then that is what I would have said.

  10. randomx6

    @ Dean:
This is the last time I am going to bother talking about Katie with you. You like her. Good for you. I don’t. Good for me. You find her powerful and on key. I find her totally lackiung in passion or interpretive skill. She does not threaten anyone that I can think of. However, let me ask, why do you find Bowersox so threatening?

  11. Dean

    @ angie:
We’ve hadis discussion before. I don’t understand how that girl can not win people over. The judges keep saying that she has a great voice. I think what you mean is that she’s not “innovative” enough for your tastes. But who is. I’ve seen “Crystals” for years–at coffeehouses and the like (or in front of bus depots) I’ve seen plenty of Caseys and Aarons on AI as well as in person. I think people recognize that she’s good and was ne of the best during Hollywood week–Ryan all but said so if you recall. So since she was a threat, people look for any excuse to put her down. It’s like people who don’t like a certain actor or actress for whatever reason (I don’t like Meryl Streep)–they say he/she is “mannered”. People can’t PINPOINT where in her song she’s off key or lacking in power so( they have to come up with something) they say something nebulous like–”She doesn’t move me”.

  12. @ angie:
    Well said Angie

  13. angie

    @ Dean:

I don’t really think anyone despises Katie, really. For the most part it seems a lot of people find that Katie ‘just doesn’t do anything’ for them. It comes down to there being others on the show who I, and others, find more appealing and/or enjoyable. I personally think Katie has a nice voice. She just doesn’t appeal to my senses like Lee, Crystal, and Mike. Different strokes, dude…

  14. Dean

    @ randomx6:
No emotion or personality? One doesn’t have to gesticulate to beat the band to express emotion. It IS there. The critique of her is bizarre–she’s too young but sings older, she is young but doesn’t sing songs “young enough”–(maybe she should try “Mary had a little lamb”). She’s pop, she’s country, she’s R & B. She sounds too “mature”. I said this a long time ago and I agree 100% with Randy last night–she’s primarily a “pop” singer–it’s very obvious, but one with the range to include a little country and R & B–but ultimately pop. I just don’t fathom why people on these boards despise someone with such talent at a young age. And it took a tremendous amount of courage to do a Franklin song–(who is considered sacrosanct).

  15. randomx6

    @ Dean:
Sorry, but as soon as I heard Katie’s song choice, my horror meter turned on…”For 5 long years you were my man”!!!!!! She is 17! I don’t want to be thinking of pedophilia while I watch Idol! She did hit the notes but lord no emotion or personality and no understanding of the song. The neck jerks were teen practing cool in front of a mirror and I repeat, the lyrical content was just CREEPY.
As for Bowersox, so far beyond anyone else as to bear no comment.
Most of the rest are at Michael Sarver level…(well except Andrew, Tim and Didi). Siobhan had a terrible night but is by far my favorite of the 20 and unders and has more real human personality than 6 of the other 10 combined.

And lord I think Tim will do at least as well as Sanjaya and may hit top 5 unless he curses out his Mom on stage.

  16. Dean

Slim your animosity toward Katie is amazing to me. When in the song is she “pretty bad” Where is she off key, where does she lack power. You may not like her more conservative style–and I realize it’s not “cool” to like her, but she sang rings around several of the others last night–including one-trick pony Casey. She has the purest voice in terms of quality in the bunch–and she also didn’t play it safe.

  17. Dean

    @ DrillerAA:
Wow, this year’s Sanjaya? Are we listening to the same person. Katie was GREAT last night–and chose the most difficult song too. Didi was totally off key for 2 weeks running. Andrew was better but I agree with Simon Legree–snooze city- Tim, well that poor thing is neither bad nor good–he just can’t sing at all. As for Aaron-watch and listen to his phrasing–he garbles his words-Lee is consistently good, but looks as though he’s about to throw up before going on. Smellysocks actually looked like a human being for the first time. But the worst is that Siobhan–omg, a train wreck complete with ear piercing screeches and more goofy expressions on her face than John Mayer ever did.

  18. Leila

Crystal amazing as always. Siobhan is my girl but today she was inconsistent. Hopefully her fans will carry her for one more week. Third place should be between Lee, Michael, Didi and Casey. Katie, Aaron and Tim should go straight to the Disney channel. Andrew sounds okay sometimes but he needs to work on his stage personna. He looks so sad…

  19. sonya

The people who I am voting for are,

    Casey James

    Didi Benami

    Lee Dewyze

    CBS

    Comments:

Casey James: Some parts of it was good. I gave him a couple of votes.

Didi Benami: The first half meh but the second half was pretty good. I gave her a couple of votes.

Siobhan Magnus: Stop screaming! Stop it stop it STOP IT!!!

Introducing the judges: Stop it stop it stop it!

Backstage: Why are they showing the contestants backstage? I was afraid we were going to see some drama. I’m glad we didn’t. Whew.

    The swaybots: ROFL ROFL!

The guitars: *Chucks them out the window*

Lee: FANTASTICOOOOOOOOOOOO!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! There is your moment Lee!!!!! I am voting for him a lot!!

CBS: Wow! She was on the piano. She is good but *chucks the piano out the window* OH BUT THEN SHE STANDS UP YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! SHE WAS FANTASTICO TOO!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I am voting for her a lot too!!!

Katie Stevens: That poor girl!! The judges are going to confuse her! Do R&B! No do country! No do this! No do that!! Oy! :)

    Mama Garcia: ROFL!

  20. Leila

I love Didi’s voice, but I don’t like her song choices lately. I still hope she stays.

    @ Dr. Electro:

  21. Bruce

Show just ended in my time zone. More good than bad this week.

    Top 3) Lee, Katie, Michael
    Bottom 3) Tim, Didi, Siobhan

Comments on the worst and best: Tim has to go. He has no talent whatsoever and he needs a haircut bad. Lee didn’t have much soul music in his performance, but he knocked it out of the park!

  22. Honestly I think Siobhan, Katie, and Tim should be in the bottom three. Tim goes home. Why you ask. The producers will not allow three girls to go home in the first three weeks. A guy has to go home this week. Andrew could be going home because he may not have the fan base to keep him out of the bottom three. Tonight was Andrew’s best performance to date, but does he have the voters in his corner?
Katie could be safe, because she has a huge fan base (tweeners, tween girls, moms, dads, etc.) Katie could be this year’s Sanjaya and stay long after she has worn out her welcome. If Katie is safe, then Didi will take her place on the Silver Stools of Doom.

  23. Sue

    Crystal & Lee – amazing!!!
Totally sick of Simon tonight – even when he liked them, he had to overthink it! SHould take his own advice.
Thought they were awfully tough on Siobhan.
Andrew saved himself – I think – if people care enough to vote.
Katie – great voice, but so stiff! She’s a mature kid – they can’t expect her to do “Party in the USA”
Tim didn’t embarass himself, but he should go.

  24. rachel

    @ Easy Rider:

Agree, followed by Lee  Lee  Lee  !!!

  25. Easy Rider

Just 3 words for this week…Crystal, Crystal, Crystal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. rachel

    @ romer:

Based on tonight’s performances, I think the bottom two will be Tim and Katie, with Tim going home.

  27. Dr. Electro

I hate the judges this week. I was moved by Didi’s performance tonight and the judges brutalized her for it. Where the hell do they put their heads while these people are performing their hearts out? :alien: :alien: :alien:

  28. romer

rachel, who do you think should go?

  29. rachel

I thought Aaron did a good job with the song. Safe for another week at least.

  30. Darla

    Totally agree!@ romer:

  31. romer

Poor Aaron, he’s so young. Sounded better in that rehearsal clip.

  32. Darla

Crystal again!!!!! She is the main reason I watch this show! Now let’s see how Aaron closes the show.

  33. angie

Crystal — Love her. Even though I don’t think this was her best of all time, she is still GREAT! She looked fabulous, too!

    I give her an A.

  34. Darla

I thought she sounded great, I just think she’s an “old soul” in a young body. She definitely has a future in recording. Simon may be right though even though I do no like country very much.@ romer:

  35. rachel

Crystal POWERsox…what a voice ! A natural beauty with a naturally beautiful voice. My favorite tonight. I think we might be looking at Season Nine’s WINNER !!!!

  36. shae32

    CRYSTAL ALL THE WAY

  37. angie

Lee!!!!!!! LETA WISE!!!!!

    FANTASTIC!

Guess what I give him?? A!!!

  38. romer

@Darla. What “teenage” soul/R&B song could she have done. In other words, Simon is right — she’s a pop-country sort.

  39. rachel

 Lee is soooooooooooooooooo cute ! Love his eyes,,,
That being said, he was AMAZING tonight !!! My favorite so far !!! Can’t wait to hear his Studio version ! I WILL be buying his music, that’s for sure !!

  40. romer

Lee is fully competent. Still don’t think he’s singing “at” someone….but rather singing at the difficulty of the moment (a high note). Like he’s in a studio, not before an audience. B+/A-

  41. angie

Katie — I am totally indifferent to her.

    I give her a B-.

  42. rachel

Did not care for Katie this week. Bottom three for sure.

  43. Darla

    I think she forgets she’s a teenager!@ romer:

  44. romer

Nothing smashing about Katie’s rendition at all. God bless her and all that. But why can’t I get interested in her…….

  45. Darla

You are right! He does remind me of Peter Noonan of Herman’s Hermits. @ romer:

  46. romer

I like Andrew’s voice, but don’t think that song was very challenging. Some pitch probs near the end. He does bore me.

  47. rachel

I LOVED  Andrew this week ! Wow ! Looking forward to his Studio as well ! I think he is safe for another week !

  48. angie

Andrew — I really really really liked that!! So much better than any week previous! I just want him to LOOK FORWARD more. He always looks down. Anyway…YAY!
    I give him an A-/B+.

  49. Darla

The tweens keep Tim in there each week, but he really was better this week. DiDi has got to go though.

  50. romer

I know the judges are right. But Tim is the avatar of Herman (Peter Noonan), who was a HUGE idol/star with the teenyboppers.

  51. rachel

What is up with these singers ? Some of them seem to keep picking the worse songs that they can ! I think Tim is in deep doo doo this week.

  52. angie

Poor, poor Tim…no control or power in his voice. WRONG song choice. I give him a D.

I want him to stay to tick people off. hee hee hee

  53. romer

Tim is showing growth. Very photogenic.

  54. romer

Thought Casey’s was way better than Didi’s. Wrong song for her……or at least the wrong arrangement.

  55. rachel

I usually like Didi. But tonight was not her night. What happened ?

  56. @ romer:

    should be fixed :)

  57. Darla

Please please please send Di Di home…………

  58. angie

Didi — I love her. She’s just so sweet. I love how emotional she gets. I don’t think it’s fake or a put-on. I relate because **I** am an inappropriate crier, myself. lol

I still find that I really dig something in Didi’s voice. She was a tad flat tonight at times. (She looks gorgeous, though!) NOT her best.

    I give her a…C+.

  59. romer

Oops, Slim — wrong name and pic.

  60. rachel

Love  love  love  Big Mike !! I love his voice !!! I can’t wait to hear the Studio version of this one !!!

  61. angie

Big Mike —  He rocks the sensitive/romantic thing, major!! Just gorgeous! I can’t wait for the recording!
    I give him an A.

  62. r

i have an idea…. why don’t they send 9 home tonite, and just let Bowersox do the remainder of the season as 8 2-hour solo concerts…

  63. Darla

Tuned in late but just missed Siobhan and it sounds like I didn’t miss much. I wish Mike would do something other than love songs.

  64. ABB

Siobhan is quite the quirky dresser, eh? Didn’t love the singing, wish she’d concentrate on the rest of the song as much as she does the “note”…

  65. romer

Just two singers in the first half-hour. Like I said,

  66. romer

The gal judges are right. A little too safe. Thinking the guitar is his shield, makes him comfortable, and he doesn’t break out enough to be an idol type. If there were a band contest……it would be fine.

  67. rachel

I thought Casey did a good job with that song. Not winner material, but still good.

  68. angie

Casey — Very goaty. He doesn’t do much for me. I don’t dislike him. Ellen called it generic, and I think I agree. I am fine with him going to top 5 or whatever. I just kind of don’t care. Is that awful? Oh well. :cheerful:

    I give him…a B-/C.

  69. fleibye

Yeesh…poor Siobhan. At least it’s better that she have a night like this now, rather than later on in the competition.

  70. romer

Sometimes the ol’ throat tightens up a little. Gotta be able to improvise. She couldn’t quite hit her first high note. Then the second time, it was even worse.

  71. rachel

Siobhan really needs to ditch that screeching ! She has a very nice voice without that scream !

  72. angie

Siobhan — Not loving that hair. Not loving this song choice. Her voice was cracking, she hit flat notes and sharp notes. One of her “big notes” was actually pretty decent and less screaming. NOT her best at all.

    I give her…a C.

  73. romer

I expect to be bored tonight…….but am keeping an open mind.

  74. angie

Ursher is too cool, man. :) I do like him.

  75. angie

I wonder if Randy gets his Party Cardis/Arty Cardis at Old Navy??

  76. angie

Ha ha..I liked Ryan’s entrance and the Simon/Ellen kiss. LOL

  77. angie

    Cue the comments!
