Nastia Liukin was robbed of the gold medal in the uneven bars on Monday. A tied scored at the end of the competition left Nastia tied with China’s He Kexin, both with a 16.725. With the new scoring system in place a tie means the judges go to the scores. After the high and low scores are removed, if the two are still tied, the judges then remove the next lowest score (not next lowest and highest). This gave the gold medal to Kexin.

I think it’s ridiculous how obviously rigged all this stuff is.. Alicia getting knocked out of third place by a CHINESE (and she had the worst landing ever…)… Nastia getting jipped out of a gold to a CHINESE…
And yeah, He is definitely 12.
what’s going on with these judges? they seem like they have no clue what they’re doing… they obviously missed how the chinese girl had more mistakes than nastia did… so why did they both have the sane execution score? nastia should have won in the first place and then there wouldn’t have been this whole big mess… i swear they need better judges who actually have a clue.
The scoring in gymnastics still needs improvement. As a contrast to the vault, look at the pommel horse. Artemev’s 2-minute-plus routine was outstanding, but at one point he stepped (not actually fell) off the apparatus. He returned to the side horse and completed the routine beautifully. Now, despite his high start value and the perfection of 98% of his routine, once he stepped on the floor all the commentators acknowledged that his chances for a medal were gone, even though most of his performance and SV were superior to the other competitors.
Now compare that to Fei landing on her knees and the PRK girl stepping out on her vaults – how could they even remain in contention with those flaws?
In my opinion they can’t remain. The knee landing should have been an instant loss of any chance at the metal. Stepping out of bounds should also result in that. You don’t get a point in volleyball for trying a harder serve. I can go all day with any sport. Gymnastics should be closer to perfect and I don’t think this new point system is the answer.
Well, it’s good to know that if I land on my knee’s I can get a bronze!
WHAT A SHOCK ! A Chinese won the tiebreaker in a contest in China ! Think of all the money that those little girls are going to get from the tooth fairy when their baby teeth come out ! :wassat:
Sorry…I couldn’t resist.
A Polish man also won a tiebreaker in the vault over a French man. The system sucks but, in this cae, I don’t think it was gamed. The Aussie judge just doesn’t know what he/she is doing…
Actually, if I remember the explanation right, after the high and low scores are removed, if the two are still tied, the judges then remove the next lowest score (not next lowest and highest). In this case, Nastia’s next lowest score was 9.0. The chinese girl’s was 8.9. In essence you have removed more points from Nastia, giving her the silver medal. So where’s the justice in that?
Oops. That’s what I meant. :)
This still doesn’t change the fact that the chinesse gymnist is not really 16 years old. Look at her; she doesn’t look older than 13.
Sorry about that, I meant .4 to .8 higher score.
As a life long lover of gymnastics, I think the point being missed here is that the Australian judge deducted a FULL POINT from Nastia Liukin’s score. The ONLY WAY to get a half point deduction is to A) Fall OFF THE BARS, or B) FALL when YOU DISMOUNT the bars. As she did neither of these things, that paid off fake judge Nellie Kim should have stepped in right away and said that this was NOT LEGAL SCORING! Therefore, Nastia would have had a higher score and been the undisputed Gold medalist. As the little Chinese girl made 3 total mistakes, and Nastia made only 2, neither a fall, she should have had the higher score. She should have had maximum (if both mistakes were deducted .3), or minimum, (if both mistakes were deducted .1) anywhere from .6 to .8 higher score. Everyone knows Nellie Kim was paid off, but when it is this glaringly obvious, someone else should step in. That is what happens when countries who have never had a good gymnast get to judge, and the judge that is supposed to make sure it is fair judging has a new car.
Actually, if I remember the explanation right, after the high and low scores are removed, if the two are still tied, the judges then remove the next lowest score (not next lowest and highest). One thing is for certain, the olympics never go without controversy!
That is so true.
I wouldn’t call it robbed.
However, I wish I were a judge, or saw through a judges eyes, rather. Then I could see some of the stuff they see. It would help me.
Bela and Bob Costas just explained the system so that I understood it and now I feel better about the whole thing. They take out the highest and lowest scores. Still tied. Next take out the highest and lowest and the Chinese girl edged Nastia out.
One thing is for certain, the olympics never go without controversy!
Something tells me there is only one legal contestant in this picture.
Just sayin’.
I seriously dont get this anymore, you can fall all you want, make all the mistakes you want and as long as you are in favor of the judges, you get the medal no matter what. Wow, thats wrong.
Where is the old style? perfect 10? its so much better then this new complicated score system. If they want to play that way, sure, use robot judges then. How can a girl made mistakes got gold over a girl who did not, i just simply cant accept that.
They might as well put in “the more hair pins on your head the higher score you get because its very difficult to keep your balance with overweighted head -_-”
But, that IS the way the rules are written. And we established in the “Olympic Gymnastics Poll” post that they MUST follow the rules. Therefore, Nastia was a victim of an unfortunate rule, not “robbed”.
They didn’t give her the win and then take it away from her. JMO. Don’t yell at me!!
your right. but i still feel robbed :)

You are right on Rachel. That is a SAD, BAD and upsetting situation. This is the part of the Olympics that makes me say I’ not watching it anymore. But it is not the athletes fault so I try to just focus on them. That is so wrong.
Rachel, you said it perfectly. something is strange with how Chin is getting away with all of this. God forbid we upset the host nation and god forbid they have to play by the same rules that everyone else has to play by.
It’s not the first time China has received medals when they shouldn’t have. Last night during the vault , Cheng Fei fell on her knees because she didn’t get enough height on her push off. Alicia Sacramone’s performance was excellent, with NO flaws. But yet they gave Cheng the bronze medal over Alicia because ” her vaults were more difficult.” Seems like they don’t care that Cheng made a MISTAKE, more difficult or not. Even the commentators were upset !
It seems the Chinese are going to be well known for their favoritism, in my opinion. It seems they got away with two fourteen year olds winning over our older and legitimately aged girls. Of course the Chinese deny it, even though those girls competed LAST year and were only 13 years old. So how did they become 16 yrs. old in one year ? If we must abide by rules, then EVERYONE should. It’s not fair to ANY other country.
I will be glad when this is all over. First the fake fireworks, then the little Chinese girl who wasn’t “pretty enough” in the Chinese eyes, so a more pretty girl in THEIR opinion, lypsynched the Chinese Anthem using the other little girl’s voice ! Then the Chinese girls winning over the Americans because their much younger girls were better. Then last night the Chinese girl falling on her knees, but yet still winning a medal, and now this.
I think that rules should be for EVERYONE, not only the countries that are NOT the Host nation. And I feel bad for EVERY other country, not just the United States.
Can you imagine if the situation were reversed and the Olympics were held here and the same thing happened , but they gave it to the American ? Tell me the Chinese wouldn’t have yelled the LOUDEST !!! :getlost:
You are right Rachel.

Ummmmm I think you might want to take the word “robbed” out of the title because she most certainly wasn’t robbed.
And I’m sure that if nastia had won, the chinese wouldn’t go about whining how they were robbed because that is simply the scoring system and no one can do anything to change it.
she was robbed. she scored exactly the same as the gold medalists with a higher valued routine and walked away with the silver. That is robbed.
That is being robbed.
