FOX has now confirmed that Paula has officially left the show.

[note]FOX Statement : Paula Abdul has been an important part of the American Idol family over the last eight seasons and we are saddened that she has decided not to return to the show. While Paula will not be continuing with us, she’s a tremendous talent and we wish her the best.”[/note]

    @CB –
Slight adjustment if you don’t mind CB:
“Since Carrie” (AND DAUGHTRY) “in Season 4 AI hasn’t turned out a major star.”
If Kris doesn’t break big but Adam or Matt or Allison do, they are ok. It’s the VOTERS who made the mistake. If no one from a season breaks big then it is AI and the judges.

@CB yeah spin and truth don’t bear on each other in TV but I still found it interesting and revealing.

Now there she would really have something to add, she would make a great judge on SYTYCD more her forte without making up words such as “Pitchy”

@Teri – No offense taken or intended.

I just find it interesting to ‘compare & contrast’ views expressed before the season started last year vs the end result, which seems to be Paula out & Kara in. Some people hated the idea of a 4th judge, some liked it, some were on the fence. I don’t remember too many IBL regulars except Lee liking Kara but not liking the concept of the 4th judge. It seemed that the animosity aimed at judge #4 transferred to her.

I think Fox intended things to turn out exactly as they have – back to 3 judges. How could they lose? If Paula rejoins the fold, Kara isn’t renewed and life goes on. If Paula won’t re-sign at the dollars Fox likes then she’s gone & Kara is the 3rd judge with a year’s experience and less of the stigma of being the new Paula. Given the contract resolutions to date its obvious that TPTB feel Simon & Ryan are the key components anyway.

What seems to be lost in all this hoopla is the fact that Fox is in the advertising business, not the music business. Looked at in that light it all makes more sense.

If ratings continue to go down the easy target is going to be Kara but I don’t think that’s where the fault will lie. Since Carrie in Season 4 AI hasn’t turned out a major star. If Kris doesn’t pan out and sells albums in the Taylor/Rueben range instead of the Carrie/Kelly range that’ll be 4 years in a row AI has missed the pulse of America. That will spell the demise of the show, not who’s sitting in the judges’ seats. If the show isn’t producing relevant stars then it won’t be as popular and that translates directly to advertising $’s. If Fox can make a nickle more producing Tuesday Night Baseball AI will be gone in a flash.

@random – I think positive spin and the truth are two different animals

@starshine – I agree with Lee – I think you’re dead on. I didn’t mind when the judges disagreed but I was annoyed when Paula & Simon took it to extremes. Sometimes the interplay just became uncomfortable for me. The dancing was ok.

Goooood grief. Good golly, Miss Molly. Give me a break.

Looking at my OWN comment on that particular linked post, I was concerned about ADDING A 4th JUDGE BECAUSE OF TIME RESTRAINTS!

Guess what?? Adding a fourth judge contributed GREATLY to the time problems!!!

I will miss the Paula-Simon antics.
I will miss wondering what’s in her cup each week
and the “You looking beautiful tonight”
Paula has been there since day 1 and I will miss her. Paula always uplifted the contestants with kind words and gave them encouragement. I can do without Randy ( I like him but am tired of dawg this, dawg that). I wish the best to Paula and maybe we’ll see her as a guset judge on SYTYCD.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane CB. THis is off your point but I especially liked this quote from Slim’s original post…

“Fox’s President, Mike Darnell, said “With Kara by her side, Paula finally has some back-up and now there is going to be a lot more ‘girl power’ on the show.”

Guess they decided there was too much “girl power” last year?

Only see people talking about the 4th judge idea, not Kara in particular being evil. I still don’t like the idea of 4 judges, takes up too much talent time. Jeez, why is someone always stirring the pot. If I make others feel terrible about themselves then I will look superior. No offense intended, but what was the point?

Anyway, starshine, don’t ever be afraid to ‘go against the grain!!” We love you!!

Again, I say, I will miss Paula a LOT!! I never found her to be as incoherent as some did. I found her fun and funny and sometimes just a breath of fresh air. Yep, she often had trouble thinking of the right words, but I think that was because she was trying to be tactful. If nothing else, she made the contestants feel good. I like that about her.

I don’t like 4 judges. I hope they don’t have lots of guest judges next season. Four judges makes it hard to squeeze everything in.

Now, if TPTB would stop encouraging RYAN to badger Simon and egg the contestants on to talk back to Simon!! THAT would be an improvement!!

I hope Paula ends up coming back!
Very nicely said, I also don’t like the 4th judge idea and will miss Paula, but as I said in a previous post, Simon and Kara’s thoughts are the only thoughts that mean anything to me. I am done with the dawg and maybe Paula has bigger and better things to do. Paula would be missed. & I agree Angie, Oh Jeez!

Love your comments Starshine, keep um comin girl
It is said that if the ‘fans’ are upset enough and complain enough, it could bring her back…. Paula made a reference to the ‘fans’ and she may be hoping and making a call to her fans to group together and demand her return with a decent contract… I know this is not popular, especially on this blog, so, first I would like to say that Paula is adorable, and a talented little elf…but Paula was such a distraction.. with her childish antics, her slurring and incoherent, jumbled critiques…and I hate how she had to be the center of attention by standing up and dancing around when the contestants were trying to perform… I always considered that rude. People hate change, but really give this some thought.. I see a better, tighter show with more attention to the performers. And less, kindergarten fights and wrestling that has gotten out of hand. There is enough of that from the auditions…the judges need to set an.example of serious work and passion for the music, with honest and sincere judging.
I’m excited with this new grouping, and I want to give it a chance before I say it is not going to work.
Thank you Starshine for saving me all the typing. My thoughts exactly word for word. Nothing to add except the show has always been about the talent for me as a former musician myself.. Young people struggling to make their hopes and dreams come true is what it’s all about. I am anxious as Starshine to see the focus back where it belongs.

    @starshine0810

Sorry, but don’t you know all change is inherently bad, Bad, BAD? Nothing is allowed to alter our own little hermetically sealed comfort zone – for goodness sake, don’t even THINK of giving it a chance. Minds were made up prior to the start of LAST season that Kara was evil & must be destroyed. To change one’s mind now? Perish the thought.

    Heretic……………

I agree Slim, you just never know about these things. I still believe she will be back. I am thinking they need a bit of drama for the ratings

  24. rachel

I wouldn’t count her totally out yet until January when Idol starts again. It may all be a ploy for more money or publicity for the show.

  25. Jimmyohyeah

Good Riddance. Last year the show was so focused on the judges. Four judges this, judge’s save that…. The antics between Simon and Paula were distracting and annoying. Maybe the producer’s will focus on the contestants more and we’ll get to know them instead of all the pimping and exposure only a select few get.

I hope the producers go back to the roots of the show. The search for an AMATUER/UNKNOWN superstar. Make the show about the singers, not the judges.

I will admit, however, that if Randy had been the one to go I’d have been fine with that too. Also that I couldn’t stand Kara last year. Hopefully without the Paula distraction, Kara will be more comfortable.

Now we’ll find out if people hate the idea of the 4th judge or just hate Kara a/k/a “change”.

Not that we’ll ever know the truth but questions I’d like to have answered:

    1) How far apart was the money?

    2) Was Fox anticipating this when Kara was brought in or was Kara just a chip on the table?

    3) Was Fox negotiating seriously?

    4) Was this Paula digging in her heels or did her agent f’ up her stature on the show?

    5) How much of this was “Simon got THIS & Ryan got THAT – where’s mine?”
