Song Selections – Top 5

Published on April 29th, 2008 by in Season 7

We are finally down to 5 and this week the contestants take on the songs of Neil Diamond and here is your chance to predict what you think what they might sing. Simply take a second and leave your song choices in a comment.

If you need some help with what songs Neil has done then simply click here. There are a ton of them to pick from.

Keep in mind that Carly was planning on singing “Sweet Caroline” so that song may in fact be out for anyone else. I am not sure how far ahead of time they begin picking songs for each theme but it is possible since she was going to sing it and is gone, that no one else will be allowed to do it. I am not completely sure though.

Don’t WANT him to win!!!!!!!! I want him to be able to record HIS music, not the schlock AI makes the winners record. Remember, I LOVE Jason, so I only want GOOD things for him :)

15. Colleen

Here are my Neil Diamond song choices for 5 remaining American Idol contestants this week.

David Cook:
Solitary Man, (See Original 1966 Version. It\’s still the best one to adapt!)
Girl You\’ll Be a Woman Soon

David Archuletta:
He Aint Heavy, He\’s my Brother
I\’m A Believer

Syesha:
I Am I Said
Shilo

Jason:
Forever in Blue Jeans
Sweet Caroline

Brooke:
You Don\’t Bring Me Flowers Anymore
Mr. Bojangles

My Favorite all-time Neil Diamond song is, \”Solitary Man\”. Huge 1966 Love anthem sung by all the teens who sang along on the radio whenever it was played. Myself included. Neil Diamond performed it live on American Bandstand TV Show in 1967. Check out the original on
http://www.last.fm/music/Neil+Diamond/_/Girl%2C+You%27ll+Be+a+Woman+Soon

If David Cook picks this song and COOKS it up, he will have a guaranteed winning performance. Open this song by singing to the girls in the mosh pit…….You\’ll have both the Daughters and their Moms screaming for more!

Can\’t wait to see the show.
Good Luck!!

16. Yes, it’s Judy’s recording I remember best. I can hear it in my mind’s ear. It still sounds very soothing. It would be fantastic to hear Brooke sing a duet with either Judy or Joni. Even if audio-visual trickery had to be employed. So, here in one paragraph is mention of three voices I really love.
I actually think it would work for David C to do “Forever in Blue Jeans”. It would show a different side of him, and I think he could make it really cool and sexy.

Jason would probably do a good job with “I’m a Believer”, which would be more uptempo for a nice change, yet still seem to suit his mood and style.
I bet DC could make that song his own and it would sound good, But “I’m a Believer” for me has the stigma of the Monkeys on it. I just can’t get past that

Nice talking with you Doc

20. TLR

After much searching Doc, I have drawn the conclusion that it was a song that was covered by Neil Diamond,,,but it is still fair game  I know you really like Brook and I still think it would be a wonderful song for her to do.

If I remember right Neil Diamond wrote the song “Both Sides Now” that was sung by Joni Mitchell. That would be an absolute perfect song for Brook
You are most correct! No telling what she will pick but I’d love to hear her sing that one!
Neil didn’t write it but he has performed it so it is fair game.

“Both Sides Now” is a song by Joni Mitchell. Her recording first appeared on the album Clouds, released in 1969 and later on the album of the same name.

It is one of Joni Mitchell’s best known songs (with “Big Yellow Taxi”, “Woodstock” and “A Case of You”). It was written in March 1967, inspired by a passage in Henderson the Rain King by Saul Bellow.
Judy Collins made the first commercially released recording of the song in 1968 (shortly after Mitchell wrote it); Collins’ version reached the top ten on the U.S. pop singles charts and won a 1968 Grammy Award for Best Folk Performance.
Neil Diamond, Anne Murray, Glen Campbell, Engelbert Humperdinck, Leonard Nimoy, Jason Falkner, Catherine MacKinnon, and Robert Goulet have recorded covers of this song as well.”
per the link I just posted below, Neil Diamond wrote the lyrics. I have always been a firm believer in not beliving everything I read so it could be wrong. FYI Also Wiki is not a great place to always have the correct information either. Other than that one link I am only finding Joni Mitchell connected to that song
For what it is worth Wiki seems to have gotten most of their details from the http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com/index.cfm?PgNm=TCE&Params=U1ARTU0000368
which is the Canadian Encyclopedia of Music

Another song that would be perfect for David A is Summer Love from the Jazz Singer :cheerful:

28. Antonio

Neil Diamond songs..looks like we are in for a mello night

29. rachel

30. TLR

Pretty Amazing Grace would be another song that would fit Jason’s voice

31. rachel

I don’t care for Neil Diamond or his songs. I didn’t care for Mariah Carey, either. But Mariah Carey week turned out good, so hopefully Neil Diamond night will too. Especially since I like the the voices who sing the songs better than their “owners” !!! :)
:)

32. I’m just going to toss this in here and see where it lands. Not too terribly long ago, I heard Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand sing a duet of “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” and thought it was the cheesiest thing I had ever heard. It was supposed to be some kind of a big moment. I thought it sucked. Therefore, I hope NOBODY does “Flowers”!! :em54:

33. Lee

Solitary man, best for Cook.
I am I cry, for Archie
Song sung Blue, Best for Jason
Sweet Caroline, Syesha
Brooke won”t make up her mind in time for the show.
FYI the name of the song is I am I said,,,at least that is what it is called on the CD I have:em47:
You are correct, I did not even look at the song list till after I made my picks, I was working strictly on memory. But I still think that song would be perfect for cook because it fits his appearance, demenor, additude and mostly his voice. :em64:

34. CycloneChibi

Fanblast said they’re singing two songs this week…is that true? If it is…

David C. – Girl, You’ll be a Woman Soon, Solitary Man
Jason – Glory Road, September Morn or Forever in Blue Jeans
David A – I am..I Said, Canta Libre, or I’m a Believer
Brooke – September Morn, You Don’t Bring Me Flowers
Syesha – Love on the Rocks, Thank the Lord for the Nighttime

I personally hope that no one does “Sweet Caroline”. It’s such a popular song, and everyone knows it as Neil’s voice singing it.

35. Leila

David Cook would be PERFECT for “Girl, You’ll be a Woman Soon” (Pulp Fiction version). Sexy!

David Archuleta would prove he can sing something more uptempo if he choses “I’m a believer”.

Brooke would be nice doing “September Morn” on the piano.

Syesha – Sweet Caroline

Jason – anything that he can make sound less tacky. Hopefully he learnt a lesson with “Memory”.

I hope David Cook will sing I’m a believer:em78:

40.
I hope Brooke doesn’t sing You Don’t Bring Me Flowers.
That would be too predictable in every way.
And it would be done in a flowered dress.
I know she can do better than that.
Now I have a mental image I can’t shake. I can see her in that flowered dress shaking like a chihuahua in a draft singing “You Don’t Bring me Flowers.” My mind’s eye will never be the same.

41. I hope Brooke doesn’t sing You Don’t Bring Me Flowers.

42. TLR

David C — I am I Said or Soolaimon or Brother Love’s
David A — Play Me or Girl, you’ll be a Woman Soon
Jason — Shilo or Forever in Blue Jeans
Brook — September Morn or Brooklin Roads
Syesha — You don’t Bring Me Flowers

Just going off of what might suite their voices

43. lbops

Neil Diamond originally wrote Red Red Wine. Jason might try and take that one.

44.
David Cook – September Morn or Sweet Caroline
Jason – I’m a Believer or Song Sung Blue
Brooke – You Don’t Bring Me Flowers
David A – Turn On Your Heartlight
Syesha – America or Coldwater Morning
I think Cookie could do a great version of “Sweet Caroline”

I also agree with whoever said Jason could do “Hello Again” (or whatever it’s called.)

I think this will be a good week.

45. TJ

I am thinking David C. will probably do something like Cracklin’ Rosie. Jason might do Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon or Shilo. Archie will definitely do something sappy, so it could very well be You Don’t Bring Me Flowers or he could spice it up and do I’m A Believer. It’s hard to say what Brooke will do, but I could see Syesha doing Thank The Lord For The Nighttime.

46. The Huny

Brooke Song Sung Blue and You Don’t Bring Me Flowers….

Which brings me to my next item of business :) Anyone who consideres themselves part of the Brooke Bandwagon, we are sending her flowers on Monday. If you would like to contribute to make it a HUGE bunch, please e-mail me at flowers4brooke at Gmail.com

47. Someone tell me why they aren’t doing 2 songs Tuesday. That’s disappointing! “em68:

At least you aren’t ambiguous about your likes and dislikes. I felt the same way about Mariah Carey week but I was pleasantly surprised just the same. Of course, if you don’t want to watch, just keep an eye on this blog for the latest info and results. :)

I know Diamond as well as I know the Beatles. I loved his music when I was a youngster. Later on I could take him or leave him. It finally got to the point I didn’t want to hear it any more. Now, I’m ready to hear these kids tackle some of the good tunes all over again. :)

58. Billy Boy

This should be interesting, as I’m sure I know hundreds of songs penned by Diamond but have no idea they’re from him! :D

59. rachel

David A. And the Grass Won’t Pay You No Mind
David C. America
Jason Song Sung Blue
Carly I’m a Believer
Syesha Thank the Lord for the Night Time

60. Mac

Finally, a week that should offer the fans of AI some consistant entertainment. Diamond’s music covers a fairly range of styles. He was also a songwriter before his days as a performer (like Dolly) so there should be a few tunes (like the Monkees “I’m A Believer”) that would fit well for the top 5.

61. MSCC

Jason- Lucy in the sky with diamonds. Ooops, wrong diamond. :em73:
