Update : Spoilers In. There Are Changes
David Archuleta (3/3)
“Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” (Clive’s Choice)
“Imagine” (David’s Pick)
“In This Moment” (Songwriters Song)
David Cook (3/3)
Collective Soul Song (David’s Pick)
“I’ve found what I’m looking for” (Clive’s Choice)
“Dream Big” (Songwriters Song)
Archie won the coin toss and elected to sing second. Historically every winner has gone second except for Ruben. Its not looking good for Cookie.

Oh goody!! I can’t wait for the fireworks in this big competition!!
Marissa’s comment was deleted. We have no more time for the juvenile out-of-control fanatics who can’t spell, much less be nice.

These comments are so juvenile I do not know how to respond, but I’ll give it a shot: Bashing Archie is not the best way to encourage people to vote for Cook.
Believe it or not, I am actually one of the few undecided’s out there and I will vote depending on who sings the best and who I think defines himself more. If I had to pick from the song choices so far, I would say Cook, but who knows…
That is unfortunate that some feel the need to put people down just because they may not be their cup of tea. There is a way (believe it or not) to root for your favorite, be passionate about it, without cutting anyone down.
i hope Archie wins!! please…..
Ok.. do you have an UPDATE on what CLIVE DAVIS has chosen for David Cook?
Not yet. probably within the hour we will
Ok.. do you have an UPDATE on what CLIVE DAVIS has chosen for David Cook? Thanks.. Also, GO DAVID ARCHULETA, you are so talented for 17 yrs old and deserve to win. I will be voting for you!
Best of luck to you both! Have a great time and smile, this is your DREAM!:)
wha if the lightning dosent sriek again for david archy and imagine isnt what he though it was gonna be!
I like David Cook’s Coronation Song better than David Archuleta’s. But of course HOW they sing them will determine which one actually turns out sounding better.
Cookies’ song is totally awesome, who says if wins Idol they will tie his hands, maybe he’s Super man and he broke the chains. The proof is in the song.
My Wife is a loyal Archie fan, she scans the blog but never posts. I’m a die hard Cookster man. We will most definatly by both of their cd’s. When you think of Cooks schedule and how little time he had to arrange the music to that song its amazing how much talent he has.
Well since those are studio recordings we have a good idea of what their cds’ will sound like, which one would you rather buy?
I think each of those coronation songs fit the contestant who is singing them. Especially the one for Cook.
The Cook one isn’t half bad. The other one – I’m not so impressed, but I think it’s more the guy’s voice that bores me. I think Archie will do well. Tonight’s gonna rock the casbah – I’ve been looking forward to this finale for, like, 10 weeks.
hopefully they get to sing the song it makes so muich of a difrance.
&& wow this songs really good i thinkk davey can pull it off.! and make it his own im thinking maybe acoutsic or on the guitar slow like hello.!
hmm i CANT WAIT!

This I don’t know. But I have fixed the coronation song upload in the post for David Cook. It plays the correct song now.

I went back in the archives to see if I commented on either of those coronation songs when Slim posted about the songwriter’s contest. Nope. Neither of them were mentioned by me. I wouldn’t have remembered them anyway as I found them all pretty forgettable.
ohh i’ll be voting for David……. David Archuleta!
Same here. But win the title or not, both Davids will do well in their music careers !
Yes, I think that Cook’s musical theater background has really helped him during this competition.
I had no idea that he has a musical theatre background. It certainly would explain his ability to “channel” the Phantom!
PS: also, does anyone know if they will do slightly longer versions of the songs or again those awfully short 1′ 30” versions? Maybe they do not have time for anything longer, doing 3 songs each? thanks
I am SO thrilled that DC is going to sing Still Haven’t Found. It is, however, a REALLY tough one. People know it so well, and have never heard it covered (at least I haven’t), so it will be hard to have people buy into a new version of it. But trying to just replicate the original is suicide (sorry but no one can compare to U2 in that song…). Maybe the way to go is to do it like U2 have done sometimes live, slowing it and stripping it down. Having said that, I think it’s positive to do a new song (as opposed to Archie doing Imagine again- as fantastic as it was the first time).
Any rumor on what Clive’s pick for DC is yet???

I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time. DC’s performance of Always Be My Baby and Billie Jean were very nice indeed but yes, I too thought Music of the Night was pretty creepy.
I think that was the intention  Considering the original Phantom of the Opera, I had the impression his vocal was supposed to be “creepy”. I think he did it well, but that might be just imo.
As far as the song spoilers, DA has two good choices which I think he’ll do well with. Hope to hear at least one of DC’s soon.
I also found it nice that they each had the opportunity to choose their own coronation songs. That gives them both a bit of flexibility.
I’m already anxious about the show on Tuesday. :pinch:
Maybe Cook was channeling the Phantom a bit too well? I just don’t want to think “ewww, creepy” when I look at a rockstarl. Leave the creepy acting to the Broadway stars, and give me a sexy, creep-less performance. (A la “Billie Jean” or “Always Be My Baby.”) And as I’ve already mentioned, that scream at the end was just plain weird.
Yeah, I agree with you about the note at the end, most definitely. That was probably the biggest piece of (constructive) criticism I could give him for that on the live performance.
I guess for me, I listen to a lot of different genres, so I don’t limit myself to one style of music. Artists who can cross or adapt to different stylistics tend to impress me a lot when they do it well, and I think DC’s done that for me this season.
It did genuinely surprise me how well MotN was adapted by DC for the most part because he performed it in the style it was adapted to, and a bit out of his comfort/defining zone. Yet, I’d argue DC isn’t just a rocker, he knows musical theater well also. It really impressed me, and I don’t say that because I’m overly fond of DC, but because I think well of him based on the performances he gives as being true to himself-he makes it sound sincere, maybe not always pitch perfect, but then again, when you’re doing a live performance and under so much pressure, you’ll have a few misteps every now and again.
I loved ABMB and Billie Jean, those were performances that really gave me chills. I also liked Elenor Rigby and Daytripper, because they really asserted who DC is as a rocker. Defining, but you know if he could stretch to a performance like MotN, his knowledge and versatility gives more to him. It’s hard to do, very hard.
I respect your opinionwholeheartedly though, because I can also understand it’s a bit of a transition to stretch from Broadway/Classic Vocal to Rock. I think Cookie did a great job though, so it may just be a difference in opinion.
First of all, it’s SOOOOOOOOOOOO nice to have conversations with differing opinions but where tempers are kept in check. I love it! Let’s battle it out like adults! Yes, I think that Cook’s musical theater background has really helped him during this competition. He knows how to connect with the audience, something that Archie still struggles with. When Archie connects well with a song, that connection with the song is what draws the audience in, but Cook, on the other hand, even if he’s not feeling the song all that much, still manages to connect well with the audience. That connection has evolved a bit this season, in my opinion. Cook started out seeming so incredibly arrogant (too much “acting” perhaps?), and now he seems quite humble. Although Archie is my favorite, there is much to admire about Cook’s style and skills.
In regards to the Clay/Ruben comparison… DA has broken a lot of the so called “curses” so don’t get your hopes up yet.

If your wrong Random, then so am I! Because I dont think this thing can get any tighter. It will be won by a very narrow margin. I would not be suprised if Florida has to do a recount[ha]!. The only point I was trying to make about Sir Elton is that he and so many other artists have built their careers on the foundation of ballads.
I was hoping that Archie would get an Elton John song because it will allow him to demonstrate the full range of his voice and his ability to change notes so sharply as well as hold them so long. Elton has been doing slow ballads for over 30 yrs and has made over a billion dollars. So those that are bored with slow ballads are a very small minority!
I dont think Cookie going first will hurt him, because at this point the fan bases are set and America has all ready decided. Its going to be a matter of which side is fastest with the phones, so everybody get ready to DRAW!!!!!!!!!!!! :w00t:
Yup – Elton has done slow ballads but if that was all he had done he would be long gone. A small sample of not ballads by Sir Elton follows: Crocadile Rock; Honky Cat; Saturday Nights Alright For Fighting; The Bitch IS Back; Don’t Go Breaking My Heart; Hakuna Matata (sp); Stan; etc.; etc. ; Variety equals longevity.
That being said I think that Clive (or his peeps) has set both of them an interesting challenge. While I wish the songs were more modern (say less than 15 years old) they both have a good chance to expose holes in the singing and performing skills of both perfomers and both songs set traps for the davids. One could fall back into pretty but vapid and disconnected with mellisma and glory note and the other into midrock pitchy droneathon with glory note. These two songs are the make or break songs. The one who does it better gets the swing votes, the casual tune ins, etc. Course that is my opinion, I could be wrong

Did’nt Clive pick that same song for Bo Bice?

Your Right no doubt, but if you survey his greatest hits down thru the decades, Im going to guess the ballads far out weigh the rock.

Oh I’m glad. Difficult to spot subtleties when we’re all so wrapped up in the craziness that is American Idol. Especially during the final week!
And “Imagine” should be even better this time around now that he’s made such improvement on the lip-licking thing as well as the gasping that was so noticeable earlier in the season.
So DA is doing “Imagine” after all. Good choice since that one was a huge winner for him earlier.
I’ve always voted for Cook but they’re both terrific and I won’t be disappointed no matter who wins. This season (for me) rocked.
I agree with rachel – i would LOVE to see Cook sing something Josh Groban/Michael Buble-esque. I think he would really rise to the occasion and show us his true talent as a musician with his own arrangement of something no one would ever imagine him singing (see Alway Be My Baby…)
After last week’s Switchfoot performance (which I did LOVE, for the record), I decided that David C shines when he does something outside of his given genre (rock) and makes it his own. Archie, on the other hand, does the best when he does something in his genre (ballads) and keeps the original arrangement but tweaks it very very slightly (like last week’s And So It Goes)
Either way – I think this will be one of the best finale’s ever – I honestly won’t be too disappointed regardless of which David wins… having said that…

I am rooting for both of the David’s, but voting for David C.

We can expect a ballad for David A. possibly because that is what he sings best. Just like we can expect something for David C. to fit his singing style as well. I would love to see David C. tackle a Josh Groban or Michael Buble song. How do you think he would do ? EVERY singer sings what they do best. And everyone’s taste in music is different, so this is a good thing.
And as far as one contestant “shining” over another, it is a matter of opinion, not fact. I can say the same for David A. But it is MY opinion only.
Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me is a great song for David A. Can’t wait to hear what David C will be singing. I hope it’s something witha soft rock feel to it.
I was half-hoping for “Your Song” or “Bridge over Troubled Water,” but I’ll take “Don’t Let the Sun go Down on Me.”
So far so good. I think Clive’s choice is a good one for Archie.

Oh goodie. I suppose we can expect Cook to get Major Tom or Jeramiah Was A Bullfrog…
