I like Kris’ song a lot.
After listening to this studio version… it kind of reminds me of the quiet soft-rock sound that David Gates had with the group, Bread, back in the 70′s.
The problem with Danny is that his backstory (and not talent) has catapulted him to untouchable frontrunner status in this competition.

He gave what was easily one of the worst performances of the night this past week (studio version above is pretty weak, too) and still walked away with exponentially more votes than any of the other contestants according to Dial Idol.

As a fan of Idol, when it becomes clear so early on that the competition is “in the bag” so to speak… it makes for a boring season. But at least in such seasons past, the inherent winner was always clear because they were much more talented than the rest. That’s not the case with Danny.
Are we watching the same show? Danny was about %95 pitch perfect on the song and he hasn’t used anything but his voice in the last few weeks, he’s an exceptional artist and deserves to be right where he is as a front runner.

3. Ashley

Matt is incredible! For me, his was the best by FAR! Every week he gets better. His voice really does give me chills. I would be happy with him singing me to sleep every night.

4. Edward

Normally I would say Danny’s the best, however, since last show until now, the only song i really can remember and would like to listen again and again is Kris Allen’s. Would love to see how Danny keep his dominance and to see Kris Allen’s growth in this competition.

Adam is so awesome. His version of “Ring of Fire” was wild and maverick-y.
Anoop sang his butt off in “On My Mind” and it was awesome!
I totally hate Gokey and hope he doesn’t win….well if he does he’ll probably end up with a Taylor Hicks career anyway so…

7. Dorothy Nguyen

I love Adam Lambert! I think what he did with Ring of Fire was awesome. Yes, it seemed a little strange at first, but then I just started tingling all over. I would buy it now!

8. periwinkle

Kris is my favorite this week. That was a really touching rendition! He really is growing on to me. And it doesn’t hurt that he’s nice to look at.
But Danny still has my vote (that is, if I could vote) :silly:

9. I didn’t care much for Alexis’ Jolene, to tell you the truth.
REALLY didn’t care for Michael’s Ain’t Goin’ Down Till the Sun Comes Up.
LOVED Allison’s Blame it on your Heart. It’s one of the best of this week’s studios, I think.
Lil’s Independence Day was better in the studio version than it was live. I like it.
Adam’s Ring of Fire was actually not bad. I like the studio much, much, MUCH better than the live version. I still don’t like the “I’m on a psychedelic trip” feeling of it, nor do I like the moaning that makes it sound like he actually IS on fire, but there were redeming qualities to it.
Danny’s song… Well   is about all I can say.
Scott’s Wild Angels sounds really good. I like Scott, but I just can not see him winning this. He’s top 10-worthy, but I think he’ll go within the next couple weeks.
Anoop’s Always on my Mind is wonderful.
I loved Walkin’ After Midnight (Caw, Caw!!)
And Matt’s So Small was ok. It didn’t grab me.

10. Oh, and Adele covered it too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0put0_a–Ng

Megan totally could’ve pulled this off.

(sorry, it’s late and I’m bored)

11. The more I listen to Kris’, the more I like it. It bored me on performance night, but it’s growing on me.

I read that Taylor Hicks covered this song and I found this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwOz_9McZ6c on youtube. It’s a tribute video with pictures of Taylor and the song playing in the background. I can’t decide if it’s Taylor singing it or not. Someone in the youtube comments said it’s not. And why were they doing a “we miss you” tribute to Taylor? I was confused. Anyway….
All this garbage about Danny Gokey not mourning his late wife enough and trying to get America’s sympathy is really beginning to bore me.
Until you walk in those shoes you have no idea or right to pass any judgement on another persons feelings or motives. American Idol may be the perfect therapy for what he is going through. Most experts and family will say after a brief period of mourning the best thing a widow or widower can do is get back to work and stay busy by keeping your mind preoccupied with activity. You don’t know what he thinks, you don’t know how he feels, and you don’t know what battles are raging in his head or the pain he is suffering in his heart. Who are you to judge him and say such horrible hurting things with out a thought or a care and having no idea of what you are talking about. You don’t know how much time he spends praying to her or crying because he misses her. When people lose some one they love try just wishing them the best. At the very least, just don’t say anything about them at all if you cant think of something nice to say.

Bravo, well put, Lee. I much prefer to take the high road and think the best of people as well, since I have a hard enough time just walking in my own shoes.

They ask all the contestants for some personal stuff, they use what they think America will find interesting. By the producers showing the video or by the show saying anything about it is just a human interest story. This would have nothing to do with Danny exploiting his late wife. The only ones that are exploiting this story is those who believe that Danny is a threat to their favorite contestant and have created gossip to try and discredit the competition. As I asked you before, show me some proof. Without proof you are a gossip! :dizzy:

i am not saying AT ALL that danny doesnt miss his wife. im sure he does grieve privately and pray for her. and what you say also should apply to yourself. you also have no idea of his motives. maybe he is using american idol as a way to grieve, and maybe hes using his story to get sympathy support. the only person who knows is him, and for you to be backing him up and stating how he must feel is the same as someone saying that he’s using his story for sympathy. i do wish him the best in terms of his loss, but im just expressing my opinion. how do you think the producers got footage of his proposal? i dont doubt hes sad and in mourning, but i also happen to think that he knows his story can touch people and work to his advantage.

You all know me. I am not a homophobe. But what Adam does on stage – appears to be – acting out extremely flamboyant stereotypes. i know he is acting but take another look at WHAT he is acting. He comes across like a homosexual tart. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing but there are people in this world who don’t like that sort of thing. There are also people like me who have certain expectations of a singer/performer and Adam falls short of those expectations. His overacting and weird vocal tricks do not make him a good singer. They simply add entertainment value for those who do like his act.

That was a windy paragraph but I hope I got the point across. I don’t hate anybody and never have. I have nothing disrespectful to say about anyone. I’m just stating an opinion. Feel perfectly free to disagree with my opinion. Feel equally free to express your own opinion. Just don’t threaten me for speaking my mind about Adam.

21. Seems to me the producers have exploited Danny’s story much more than he has. I am quite sure they dig out anything and everything they can from a contestant and find the “good stories.” All we have to do is revisit any previous year of Idol and we will find evidence of this.

Personally, without seeing into their lives, I think these people would be boring. Their stories give them a touch of ‘reality.’ Having said that, I can honestly say that I, personally, have never voted for someone because of their story. I vote only for who I like to hear sing. I know that is not true for everyone, but it’s true for me.

i love love love adam’s cover of ring of fire. i liked his performance, but the studio recording is absolutely amazing. it may not be mainstream, but i can definitely seeing him having a niche and selling records.

i love allison’s voice no matter what she sings. the song really didnt do it for me, but her voice is amazing. i really hope she does well in the competition. it would be an injustice if she goes home early.

i loved anoop from the beginning. his beat it cover got me questioning him, but this week, he totally redeemed himself. i think with his talent and his fan base, he’ll go really far in the competition.

i was not a kris allen fan at all until this week. his performance was almost perfect, and very touching. i could see him winning.

and i mean no offense to danny or lil rounds fans, but they are nothing special. if danny wins, i cannot see him becoming a music superstar like kelly clarkson, daughtry, or carrie underwood. if he wins, i see him fizzling out like taylor hicks did.

lil rounds has a good voice, but she bores me. i dont think shes inventive at all. this competition is looking for the next music superstar, and i dont think shes it.

I didn’t think I was going to like Season Eight. But the more I listen to these the more I LOVE them. I actually like quite a few of the singers this year. Especially Danny  , Matt, Kris and Anoop. I also enjoy Megan.
I’m really looking forward to next Wednesday night ! (Thanks Obama).

38. IRS stuff aside, Ruben has actually done well since Idol. No, not on mainstream radio, but still he’s done well. As has Taylor Hicks, Kat McPhee and loads of others. Just because a singer doesn’t hit Top 40, it doesn’t mean they are unsuccessful. But that’s a whole other argument which doesn’t belong here in the Studio versions post. Sorry, Slim!

39. rachel

Oh, and thank you Slim for these Studio Version songs ! Love ‘em !

40. ethanXXX

The other side to that is the fact that local news media gets involved with the voting for contestants and gives some an unfair advantage.

Remember when Reuben Studdard won? I’m from Birmingham, Al, the same city as Reuben, and every night after American Idol the news would come on and encourage everyone in the city to call in and vote for him. They even had very large church groups meeting on those nights so as soon as the voting lines opened to callers they would all call over and over, numerous times each, so the Birmingham guy could win. Like I said, I live in B’ham and hated that very much. That’s a form of cheating when you consider some better singers may come from less populated areas and not have that same advantage. So the news media was somewhat responsible.

And what has Reuben done since then? Nothing, nobody hears a word about him now other than the fact that he didn’t pay taxes on the 1 album he released and is in serious trouble with the IRS. So that was just a waste, like many other Idol winners.

How that comes across as “trashy moron” or “trashy, low-class person”, I don’t know. You must have a very discerning eye for such individuals. Whatever…I will continue to enjoy the singing in spite of any and all trashiness from any of the singers whatever their background/sob story/life story is. Sing for me, people!

43. ethanXXX

Yeah, to each their own, that’s just my personal opinion of the guy and the situation as I’ve seen it as the weeks progressed. Many of them do go on there trying to appeal to the public in some way or another with their sad stories, but to me, Danny crossed a line, but that’s just my honest opinion.

That Michael guy did it somewhat, in just trying to play the hard-working family guy, and the ladies (especially the single moms) try to play that to their advantage, but when they do that, male or female, they really lose my respect and I won’t even consider them anymore. It’s a singing competition, so leave all the cry-baby stuff out and sing better than the rest or go home.

I had really hoped to see Michael go home, I sincerely think he is just awful. He deservd to go home much more than Alexis (who can actually sing), but people probably voted for him because they somehow related to his “story” and that defeats the whole purpose of the show. I hate that a singing contest is turned into a popularity contest with contestants trying to plead their hardships in life.
Is it just me, or is everything about that Danny Gokey guy just creepy. He can’t sing worth a crap, I wouldn’t but his music, and the way he PIMPED, and his family pimped, his dead wife is just atrocious. What kind of decent person would try to use other people’s emotions to get in the top 12/13? That’s just horrible. I just don’t see how other people can get behind this trashy moron, even if he could sing, which he can’t. And I don’t want to hear anything else about his dead wife, that doesn’t have anything to do with the competition, unless you are looking for an unfair advantage, right??
The producers have NOT Talked about Danny’s wife in quite some time. He SPECIFICALLY told them NOT to. When they introduced the Final Thirteen, his wife was NEVER mentioned AT ALL. But some of the others told THEIR sob stories though. Why not mention this ? How about Lil’s sob story about how her three kids deserve this ? Over and over we have heard this. So I guess she isn’t “decent either for using people’s emotions to get into the Top Thirteen” ????
Just because YOU do not like a contestant doesn’t mean everyone else doesn’t. There are contestants I don’t like either, but I would never personally tear them apart. Just enjoy who you like and everyone else will enjoy who they like.

Watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPrguUuUuI4 (interview after getting in the top 36)

He’s been pretty direct actually, about using the story about his wife to advance his position in the show. At least he was until he got into the top 12 and his stupid relative initiated the backlash.
My only other thought is this…perhaps in the interviews and such the interviewers are asking Danny about his past and his wife. Hmm…there’s a thought.

Wow, ther ALL sound great in the Studio Versions.

“I’m looking forward to people being touched by my story. It’s a very rare story where you hear a young man lose his wife at such a young age.”

Fair enough. I don’t watch any of the after the show interviews and stuff like that. I just watch the show to listen to the singing. I don’t take their back stories into consideration in the least.

I still like Danny and don’t find him trashy at all.

I don’t usually compare the Idols to the original since I find it unfair but I just went and pulled out my old copy of McBride doing Independence Day and lord yes it is emotion (not singing chops) that is missing from Lil’s version…

I think Adam tries WAY. TOO. HARD. to be over the top and edgy and different on the show. He doesn’t have to do that. Just sing. Don’t scream and screech. Don’t make weird eyes at the camera and touch yourself weirdly. Just sing!
I liked it alot. And I would like to be able to watch him sing without laughing so hard, so please, Adam, just sing. No touching. No making out with the microphone or camera. Just sing.
Can anyone provide a “touching” motie?

I had no expectations that you WOULD like Danny this week, random.
Danny singing one of my favorite genres, doing one of my least favorite songs, the odds were slim… :cheerful:
but Danny chicken dancing and singing Motown? There we may be talking. :w00t:

54. Lee

Allison and Scott impressed me most 2nd time around, of course they all sound better in the studio.

55.
I don’t find him creepy at all. Also, I haven’t heard a thing about his wife in weeks and weeks. Not sure where you see ‘trashy moron’ in Danny, but to each his own. I enjoy Danny’s singing but I don’t expect everyone else to. That’s the nature of Idol. Everyone who watches has their own likes and dislikes. I don’t really question anyone else’s taste. I just go with the flow and enjoy the singing. (for the most part.)

60. Justin

I have an Alexis Grace elimination hang-over…

61. randomx6

Kris, you have got the sensitive (and cute) guy slot locked up! Not my musical cuppa but well done!

62. randomx6

Oh Alexis, Why did you watch Brooke’s comedy version from last year. Brooke seemed not to have read the words (big grin) and you reacted by overacting the song. Well sung but (IMHO) the most over the top performance of the season so far. You still should be there however. Sigh.

63.
This is the first week in which I will be downloading ALL the songs. Wow! Who woulda thunk it?

Thanks for posting these, Slim!
Oh wait…everyone except Michael. Nevermind.

64. This is the first week in which I will be downloading ALL the songs. Wow! Who woulda thunk it?

Thanks for posting these, Slim!

65. Oh, I love Matt! This is nice! While this isn’t my favorite performance/studio of his, it’s really great. My only beef is with the overly loud background singers. Jeez…they drown him out in some parts. Another one I will be downloading.

66. randomx6

Lil’s voice is really strong and good but she just doesn’t seem to “get” what the song is about. I get no sense of a young girl watching this behavior and finally seeing her world burn. While removal is an appropriate real life reaction to this situation it doesn’t work as a song interpretation…(IMHO)

67. It’s no secret that I am a Megan fan. I LOVE this studio version! All you haters can su… go listen to someone else.

But seriously, I do love this and just love her voice. I’m glad she stayed!

68. This week is the first week in which I really liked Anoop. I feel like it’s the first time that he’s really shown his vocal talents. He’s good when he really sings. I like this version, but I do wish they’d sped it up just a tad. It really does drag a bit.

69. randomx6

I don’t know what Michael is getting over with but it isn’t his voice or his interpretive skills.

Angie is right, this is a fun song and lord a Texas oil rigger should be having the time of his life with this not doing homework.

70. randomx6

Scott should move to a midsized city and become the piano man at an upscale hotel or join a band and be the great piano player and third singer. Better than his performance but still not much.

71. I actually like Scott’s studio of “Wild Angels.” He translates to studio better than I thought he would. I like him here much better than on the show. He reminds me quite a bit of Michael W. Smith which is a good thing. I mean that as a compliment.

72. randomx6

If Megan can get rid of the bizarre pronunciations there is a career for her in the 1950′s or with the Squirrel Nut Zippers, but Patsy is not concerned. I also must say I am not sure she read the words she sings beforehand. Maybe she is doing it phonetically and that is where the pronunciation comes from!

73. Danny. LOVE. Amen.

(His PYT live performance is still my favorite of his.)

74. randomx6

Matt I must disagree with Kara, there are some small things about you and one is your voice. I don’t get the Matt love and nothing here to change my mind. I found this boring

75. I have to say, I really love Kris Allen’s voice! I usually hate the slow songs as I said on performance night, but for some reason, I just love Kris and his song this week. Beautiful. I can see him being a great ballad singer/song writer in the likes of Richard Marx. Scoff if you must. (Btw, Richard Marx wrote with Chris Daughtry for Daughtry’s new album. Cool!)

76. randomx6

Anoop! Found the arrangement too saccharine but he has found his Idol voice. Much better range than I thought and very well sung.

77. Yes, I did listen to Adam’s Ring of Fire, believe it or not.

Now, mark this down… I like it. Yes. I do. He almost lost me at about the 1:43 mark, but brought it back down a notch. He managed to NOT screech or scream and it was really nice. If I went into this recording not knowing of the original, I would be a huge fan. Adam did a great job. MUCH better than the live version. I might even download this one.

I think Adam tries WAY. TOO. HARD. to be over the top and edgy and different on the show. He doesn’t have to do that. Just sing. Don’t scream and screech. Don’t make weird eyes at the camera and touch yourself weirdly. Just sing!

Anyway, I like it. You heard it here first! (I TOLD you I would admit it, ALAN!)
Now, as I listen to Allison I immediately think that this girl is made to record. She sounds great! However, I think some of the fun was taken out of her performance as well.

I hope Allison stays for a long time.
Yes. Allison 5 stars!

79. randomx6

Alrighty then. Ring of Fire is going be on my Ipod when I get back home. LOVED IT!

Whoever says Adam isn’t country just wasn’t listening. He may not be American country (although interesting Elvis channel at the start) but he is definitely country…Israel or Morocco methinks.

80. I rather like Lil’s studio version. She really does have a beautiful voice. I like this version much better than her live version even though I still think it’s lacking something that I can’t quite put my finger on.

81. Now, as I listen to Allison I immediately think that this girl is made to record. She sounds great! However, I think some of the fun was taken out of her performance as well.

I hope Allison stays for a long time.

82. Michael Sarver = no fun at all. That is a FUN song he sang and this studio version is kind of ho-hum. Boy, if you’re gonna do THIS Garth song you gotta BRING IT! It has to make you want to get up and dance and sing along really loudly. Me no likey. I liked his live performance better on Tuesday even if he did kind of run out of breath.

83. OK…just listened to Alexis and I love it. I still say she shouldn’t have gone last night, but such is the way of Idol.
