SYTYCD – Episode 12

Published on Jul 1, 2009 by in SYTYCD

Tonight the competition continues when the Top 14 dance for your vote. Queen Angie will bring you the blow by blow. Leave your thoughts in a comment.

Hey all you dancer lovers! Are you ready to see the Top 7 couples dance their booties off to get a seat on Mary’s hot tamale train?? I am so…let’s DANCE!

Cat greets us from her opening perch up high, in a strapless bright pink frock with a black belt. Pretty snazzy, Cat. We get the intro dances and Cat graces the stage to introduce the jidges. Joining Nigel and Mary tonight is…MIA. Ugh. She has some strange ruffled thing sticking out of her jacket and her hair is clipped up into some messy sort of just-got-out-of-bed look. Ick. Cat immediately asks her if her opinion has changed about any of the dancers since ‘The Green Mile.’ Mia calls Cat out for the set-up, but without naming names, Mia says her opinion has changed for the better. Funny, but Janette and Brandon will be up first after the break.

Before each dance, the dancers give us a run down of what it’s been like on the show the past 3 weeks which essentially is a recap of the past 3 weeks. (Hello? It’s only BEEN three weeks. Do we really need recaps, already?)

Dancers: Brandon & Janette
Dance: Cha-Cha by Jean Marc Genereux to Hush Hush; Hush Hush by The Pussycat Dolls
Number: 1-800-TEMPO-01
Judges’ Thoughts: (N)That was quite possibly the BEST DAMN CHA CHA I’ve ever seen on the show! I can’t even describe how good it was. (M) You two have 2 FIRST CLASS TICKETS on the hot tamale train!! WOOOOO! (MM) I know I have scared the bleep out of you Brandon. The one’s I am toughest on are the ones with the most potential. (Brandon cries.) You are going to love me and hate me on this journey. You are amazing.
Angie’s Thoughts: That was fantastic! I just loved everything about it. These two have awesome chemistry and they just command your attention on the stage. Love them! I want them to stay! (Also? Mia is full of crap. I’ll expand on that later.)

Dancers: Kupono & Kayla
Dance: Jazz/Pop by Sonya Tayeh to Eyes On Fire by Blue Foundation
Number: 1-800-TEMPO-02
Judges’ Thoughts: (N) Kupono, you are a new man up there this week. Absolutely fabulous. So many good things and so much technique. (M) These two are alive and kickin’! It really was tremendous. You’re staying on the hot tamale train. (MM) Stunning couple. Amazing. Kayla, you commit to everything. Kupono, every single week you keep getting better and better. You’re growing.
Angie’s Thoughts: Oh, my. I loved every little bit of that! I love Sonya’s choreography! K & K danced it beautifully! One of my top couples for sure. I want them to stay!

Dancers: Evan & Randi
Dance: Broadway by Joey Dowling to Rich Man’s Frug from Sweet Charity
Number: 1-888-TEMPO-03
Judges’ Thoughts: (N) I was a little disappointed with you, Evan. But, you are still within my top 10 dancers, the pair of you. (M) I really enjoyed it. It was entertaining. (MM) You have to take that kind of choreography to the next level. Randi, it was a little heavy. Evan, I expect more from you. I want to say bravo, but I’m going to say good job.
Angie’s Thoughts: Don’t think I loved that choreography. I liked it but I didn’t. It just wasn’t a memorable dance, but I think Evan and Randi did an excellent job with what they were given. I love them! I want them to stay!

Dancers: Jason & Caitlin
Dance: Pop/jazz by Brian Friedman to Creator by Santigold
Number: 1-888-TEMPO-04
Judges’ Thoughts: (N) It was very weird. You both committed yourselves 100%. (some jokes about safe sex..) (M) I didn’t think it played to your strengths. I love the two of you to pieces. (MM) You guys danced it really well. It was a fun piece.
Angie’s Thoughts: Fabulous! I loved this choreography and the story and the way they danced it. Jidges thoughts be damned! I think the jidges talked to much about the costumes which has nothing to do with how they danced. Frustrating!

Dancers: Phillip & Jeanine
Dance: Hip Hop by Tabitha and Napoleon to Love Lockdown by Kanye West
Number: 1-888-TEMPO-05
Judges’ Thoughts: (N) If you two keep dancing like that you should be chained together for life. That was tremendous. (M) Phillip throw away the key! (MM) (blah blah blah, chain, chain, blah) Great job you guys. Congratulations.
Angie’s Thoughts: Love! It’s no secret that I love Tabither and Napoleon, and this is no exception! I love how P & J danced this, chain or no chain! I want them to stay!

Dancers: Ade & Melissa
Dance: Pas De Deux by Thordal Christensen to Romeo and Juliet
Number: 1-888-TEMPO-06
Judges’ Thoughts: (N) That was superb. Absolutely wonderful. (M) I loved it. The chemistry was flawless. Phenomenal. I didn’t want to wake up from it. (MM)(blah blah blah) It was gorgeous. Brilliant.
Angie’s Thoughts: Melissa did beautifully, as expected. Ade wasn’t given much to do except lift her but I love him and love them both. I want them to stay!!

Before the last couple, we see a very special announcement about the Dizzy Feet Foundation which has been set up to award scholarships to underprivileged kids who want to learn the art of dance. For more information go to dizzyfeetfoundation.org. On the 23rd of July, it will be the 100th episode of SYTYCD. Tyce has choreographed a special number for Katie Holmes to dance that night and Katie will donate her appearance fee to Dizzy Feet. Well, I think the foundation is an awesome thing! Yay, Nigel!

Dancers: Vitolio & Karla
Dance: Quick Step by Jean Marc Genereux to Puttin on the Ritz by Rufus Wainwright
Number: 1-800-TEMPO-07
Judges’ Thoughts: (N) It was really entertaining. The foot work was really good. The lines were really good. (M) Well so much for the kiss of death dance! Vitolio you did a magnificent job! (MM) Vitolio I am so proud of you. Karla you are gorgeous, but you looked scared at times. Keep your face bright.
Angie’s Thoughts: I LOVED it! Loved the quick change in the middle of the dance! I don’t care if their feet were spot on, but I thought they did a wonderful job!

En pointe! That is what I was trying to think of. Please forgive me for my dance jargon ignorance! Melissa is beautiful and you can most definitely see her love of ballet.

    I love this show!

Angie, my husband thought the same thing about the pas de deux, though I didn’t remember a previous one – probably because it wasn’t en pointe. I’ll have to give him his moment when he gets home tonight.

I am extremely happy they did the pas de deux. Ballet is the foundation of dance, and I love the fact that they played to the strength of the dancer. It isn’t every season that you have someone with Melissa’s specific training, and I am happy to have seen it. Plus, you could see the happiness radiating from her as she danced it. You can tell how much she loves ballet. I can’t say enough good things about it. I thought Ade did well, but the nature of this type of dance is to showcase the woman, which was done. I actually voted for them (I think that’s the first time I have ever voted.)

I think it is very difficult to predict a bottom 3 couples this week. I think Evan and Randi will be in the bottom, but don’t think either one will be sent home. It’s true that due to the overall high level of talent this year, there is no clear front runner.

Something I have to add that I didn’t put in the blog last night because I had to research it. The judges went on and on and on about the pas de deux from last night being the First! Time! Ever! I kept thinking that no, I can remember them doing it before but I couldn’t put my finger on who it was. I was leaning to toward Katie from last year, but wasn’t sure. I was right! Katie and Will did a pas de deux last year to David Archuleta singing “Imagine.” No, it wasn’t in toe shoes or anything, but it was still a pas de deux. So, take that, Nigel!

    Ahh…I feel better now.

  4. I love everyone, but my favorites are Brandon and Janette,Evan and Randy and Kayla and Kupono…

Totally agree on this. I still love the “cute couple” Evan and Randi. They put a smile on my face !
Not too crazy about Mia’s comment about Randi’s “heavy” dancing. Like we couldn’t figure out what she meant.
I just felt that despite the chreo, they were so hard on the dancers when clearly, I think they ALMOST made the routine itself likeable! I just can’t get over the smoothness of Evan and how adaptable Randi is. Instead, they made it sound like Evan crapped out half of the routine and that “heavy” comment just rubbed me the wrong way. The same goes with Jason and Caitlin. I’m sorry, but I’d be damned to see these couples in the bottom 3. They were great tonight, so I don’t care what anyone else says.
I thought Ade & Melissa did very well, although IMO, Melissa outshown Ade a bit. But still a great job !
I think so to, but I also think he was a victim of the choreography and the dance itself. He wasn’t really given ANY dancing to do. I think that is unfair.

Also, really, tell me, are they EVER going to give the pas de deux to these other dancers? I think not. It is NOT a coincidence that Melissa drew that from the hat.

( Funny comment from Phillip about “Chains being all over THEIR apartment.” Hmmmmmmmmm….)

I thought the chain concept was really cool and they did a great job with it! Mia talked out her bootie the whole night and she just went on and on and on ad naseum about the chain and her focus and blah blah blah. Gah. That woman is annoying!

I wish we could watch together..in the same room, I mean. If you could hear the things Brianna and I say. It’s funny. Mia bugs us at every turn. It’s a good thing she does great choreography!! lol

She’s just so underhandedly mean. Ugh.
That would be fun !
And yes, Mia is actually VERY mean. And she’s nothing to look at !

  16. rachel

I’m afraid Jason & Caitlin might be in the bottom three. Not because of their performances, which were great, but because of the negative comments from the judges about the choreography. Which was not their fault !

Loved them! I am so happy he has been good week after week!!
