Cat Deeley greets us and “Welcome to So You THINK You Can Dance!” As with every other dance episode, we are greeted with the introduction dances by each dancer as Cat announces their names. (OMG did you see Brandon?? Tell me he’s not an AWESOME dancer, Mia!! He’s amazing!) Cat descends the small staircase in an odd, somewhat spider-webby sort of dress. But of course she looks great in it!
Our jidges tonight are Nigel, Mary and Adam Shankman. Thank goodness they didn’t start the season with Mia! After chit chat with the jidges, we get to watch clips of the Top 20 and their journeys to the top. I’m so excited! I think I might just Mary Murphy scream!!

Judges’ thoughts: (A)That was Un-freakin-real! Jeanine you stepped it UP! (M) I do hate to disagree with Adam. BUT I’M NOT GOING TO!! You taught us a chemistry lesson! (N) You were fantastic Jeanine! You’ve made a real mark for yourself tonight. A great way to start the night.
Angie’s Thoughts: I loved it! I tend to love whatever Napoleon and Tabitha choreograph and this is no exception. It gave me goosebumps! I am very impressed with both Phillip and Jeanine. This will make me remember her, for sure. I was a little afraid Phillip’s limbs would be too rubbery, but he did a great job!
Dancers: Vitolio & Asuka
Dance: Broadway by Tyce Diorio
Number: 1-888-TEMPO-02
Judges’ Thoughts: (A) It felt a little artificial. It was danced very clean. (M) I am left just a little bit disappointed. It was just safe. You’re both fabulous dancers, but it was nice. (N) I thought the dancing was very strong. Every line was fantastic. I don’t feel as if you put your personalities into it.
Angie’s Thoughts: I spent the entire time wondering what was wrong. I think it’s just that these two didn’t really show any chemistry. However, I think they are both wonderful dancers. Also, I think Tyce’s choreography lacked something. I wanted to love this couple, but I didn’t, really.
Dancers: Jonathan & Karla
Dance: Cha cha by Tony Meredith
Number: 1-888-TEMPO-03
Judges’ Thoughts: (A) I thought that was really good. You just *beeped* me up! Your technique and lines were beautiful. (M) WOOOOOOO! I love my cha cha rough and that was a whole lotta rough and a whole lotta fun! (N) You two exploded on that stage! Exciting and challenging.
Angie’s Thoughts: Seriously with the ‘Poker Face??’ Lady Ga Ga is everywhere and I want her to go away! Anyway, great choreography and they both did well, but I think that Jonathan looks so young, it’s kind of off-putting. The dance was very sexy but he it didn’t quite fit him. I’m not feeling chemistry between these two. It’s probably just me.
Dancers: Evan & Randi
Dance: Jazz by Tyce Diorio
Number: 1-888-TEMPO-04
Judges’ Thoughts: (A) You both danced like you were 8 feet tall! Your lines went forever. Evan you are a beautiful, beautiful dancer. (M) The stars have just come out tonight. WOOO! That was just smoldering and fluid and beautiful. I think you are going to be around for a long time! (N) You were absolutely fantastic! You have just become a couple that people will recognize and talk about. They’re going to pick the telephone up for you guys.
Angie’s Thoughts: Oh wow, that was fantastic! Very hot and sexy and they just flowed on stage! LOVE them! Cat made WAY too many ‘short’ jokes, though. Jeez…
Dancers: Tony & Paris
Dance: Hip-Hop by Tabitha and Napoleon

Judges’ Thoughts: (A) I thought it was really good, BUT, I found the costumes a little distracting. You need more rebound in your moves. (M) Tony, this is your field and I expected you to really just be IN IT! It’s not believable. Paris it was just good. (N) I don’t think it was memorable. There is room to grow. You were basically doing steps. Your stank, stank.
Angie’s Thoughts: I didn’t quite feel this. I loved the choreography but it seemed forced or something. It needed to be harder and more aggressive.
Dancers: Jason & Caitlin
Dance: Bollywood

Judges’ Thoughts: (A) Very simply, YOU GUYS ROCK! Jason, your hand work was so superb. You made it look like it was nothing. Effortless. Caitlin I was worried about you but you just blew it out there. (M) I’m glad that Bollywood came to Hollywood! Jason, you just have this charisma! (N) You brought it, tonight. Absolutely fantastic. Jai ho!
Angie’s Thoughts: I loved their costumes and makeup! I didn’t love it quite as much as the jidges, but it was good! I thought Jason did better than Caitlin on this. But I really love these two so I hope they stay!
Dancers:Brandon & Janette
Dance: Foxtrot by Louis Van Amstel

Judges’ Thoughts: (A) It was absolutely lovely! You two both worked together. Brandon, you had so much character and performance tonight. (M) Janette, you were Ginger Rogers out there. Your lines and legs were lovely. Brandon is a powerhouse. Brandon, if nobody sees the talent that you are, they are just CRAZY!! (N) Janette, the way you carried yourself was just beautiful. Brandon, your big moves were terrific. Your tiny little feet, not strong enough. Work on that.
Angie’s Thoughts: Well, don’t they just look a little bit gorgeous! Beautiful! I loved it! How about that Mary with the Botox comment?? Hilarious!! Cat told her to give us an eyebrow and her thoughts and Mary said, “I can’t anymore because of Botox!” I think the entire place lost it! I was dying! Gotta love that Mary!

Dance: Jazz by Wade Robson

Judges’ Thoughts: (A) Your technique is exquisite. Wade, you are one sick puppy! (M) I bought it 100%! You were marvelous in that number! Really well done. (N) You adhered to the characters. I was in a completely different world and I loved being taken there. You kept me in that world.
Angie’s Thoughts: Whoa! They drew the lucky straw this week getting to work with Wade Robson! That was just…fabulous! The crash test dummies theme was odd yet compelling. It totally sucked me in and I couldn’t look away at all! LOVE! One of my top 3 or 4 couples for sure!

Dance: Contemporary by Mandy Moore

Judges’ Thoughts: (A) Special! (he’s teary-eyed) Ade, your power is so profound and extraordinary. You guys moved me. (M) WOOOOOOO!!! Totally believable from the very beginning. Melissa, you are spectacular! Ade, wow! You are a gentle giant! (N) Beautifully choreographed. America has so much more to look forward to with you two!
Angie’s Thoughts: LOVE! That was GORGEOUS! Aack! Too many of these people are making me love them! So many favorites make it so hard when people go home!!
Dancers: Max & Kayla
Dance: Samba by Louis Van Amstel

Judges’ Thoughts: (A) THAT WAS SO GOOD! Oh my God! Are. You. Kidding. Me? Kayla, you were born to do ballroom! Max, she could have never looked that good without you! (M) I hear a train! I hear a train! WOOO HOOOO! You are on the hot tamale train!!! Holy smokes! (N) That was truly sensational! That had everything we could ever wish for. Max you were also terrific. You have topped a brilliant night tonight!

Ahaha Rumsita, I completely feel your pain, I’m always counting down minutes until SYTYCD by Wednesday.
Also, did anyone else think it was a bit too early in the season for kissing? Hahaa…

I think this is the best top 20 performance to date. There were only 2 routines the judges weren’t crazy about…usually more 50/50 at this stage. This is a great lineup!
As for the Bollywood, I LOVED it! I love the costumes, and I loved the music (that song won an Oscar this year) & choreography. This type of dance is much harder than it looks, and I think they both did quite well. I think I’m going to have to learn what all the hand positions mean, though, so I can fully follow the story. I love that this show exposes us all to many styles of dance. I had previously seen traditional Indian dancing before this show, but I had not seen things like Krump.
This Wed/Thurs thing throws me off though. I’m so used to Idol on Tuesdays that I always come home expecting to watch the show on Tuesday. I am always disappointed that I have to wait until Wed. Anyone else have this problem?
I think Asuka & Vitolio will be in the bottom two. None of the dancers were bad at all, but I thought these two were the weakest.
I didn’t get to see most of the first half of the show. Local weather kept interrupting because of thunderstorms. I LOVE this show. I really thought that trotting out Bollywood in the first week, might be the undoing of these dancers, but they pulled it off. Caitlin was a little soft at times, but I don’t know anyone who could pull that dance off this early. I’ve already slobbered, drooled, and taken a cold shower after Max and Kayla’s Samba!!! That was WAY past HAWT!!! That was smokin’, molten,set the stage on fire HAWT. The only question is, do they have a fan base this early. See ya next week.
WOW. I agree. this is going to be an awesome season!! I’m so proud of everyone. it seems like tonight’s performances went really really well for this being their first night together as couples. its going to be so hard to choose the stand outs because so many really stepped up.
Angie, you picked my bottom three. those were the exact ones that I would guess. we’ll see if america agrees… But what a season premiere! I’m so excited to see more!!
