SYTYCD – Episode 8

Published on June 17th, 2009 by in SYTYCD

Tonight the competition continues when the Top 18 dance for your vote. Queen Angie will bring you the blow by blow. Leave your thoughts in a comment.

Week 2 of the real dancing and I am so ready! Especially after last weeks dance-apalooza extravaganza! Here we go!

The show opens with Cat wearing a red, ruffly sheet which is so distracting, I have no idea what she even said besides…this is So You THINK You Can Dance! Intro dances and ‘here are your girls and these are your guys.’ The Top 18 dance out and Cat flitters out to introduce the jidges. Tonight, along with Nigel and Mary, is Lil’ C. Let’s see what big words he tries to impress us with tonight. They chit chat a bit then the first couple is up to dance…

Before Evan & Randi dance, we learn that Randi loves her dog and Evan works on cars. They are both too adorable for words.

Dancers: Evan & Randi
Dance: Jive by Louis Van Amstel to Shake A tail Feather by Ray Charles
Number: 1-888-TEMPO-01
Judges’ Thoughts: (L)Out the box with a bang! The two of you had a great partnership going on. Solid start to the show. (M) I think it was fun. You’re both little powerhouses. It fell short a little bit. (N) You are built for the jive. Evan I thought you would be better than you were. Randi, you did a much better job than Evan. As a couple you are tremendous.
Angie’s Thoughts: I just love these two! What a ‘fun’ routine! (as was said in the footage of the practices.) I think these two have a wonderful chemistry together. The choreography was great! Much better than I think Tyce or anyone would have done. Cute little butt grab by Randi, too! Thank goodness the only thing close to a mention of these two being short was by Mary when she called them ‘little powerhouses.’ Overall, a great job! I want them to stay and I think they will.

Before Ade & Melissa dance we see Melissa try to pronounce Ade’s full name and we also learn that Melissa and her sister are married to brothers.

Dancers: Ade & Melissa
Dance: Jazz by Sonya to 24 Hours by Terry Poison
Number: 1-888-TEMPO-02
Judges’ Thoughts: (L) That was buuuck. (M) I’m going to give you guys some tough love. It was really tough to find anything I didn’t love about that! (N) Melissa, everything he did, you did in equal strength. I thought the pair of you danced it brilliantly.
Angie’s Thoughts: Sonya is da bomb dawg! I loved this dance and Ade and Melissa were AWESOME! I liked it so much, I thought the jidges would hate it, but I was pleasantly surprised. These two are both such strong and beautiful dancers! Again, I want them to stay and I think they will.

Side note: Cat is just too much this season! The little jokes she tries to make are thisclose to getting on mah nerves. Stop it, Cat! Go back to being fun and saying ‘jidges!’

Before Jason and Caitlin dance, we see that Jason was once obsessed with dancing (and looking like) Michael Jackson. He was only about 6 or 7 years old so it’s all good. Caitlin likes to do a velociraptor imitation.

Dancers: Jason & Caitlin
Dance: Hip-Hop by Shane Sparks to Missin You by Trey Songz
Number: 1-888-TEMPO-03
Judges’ Thoughts: (L) I did not love that. I am left perplexed. Your moves were sharp and clean but it was missing nectar. (ed: huh?) (M) It came off like Britney Spears and Michael Jackson. You didn’t really nail it. (N) I thought you looked really good out there doing this routine.
Angie’s Thoughts: I am on the fence with this one. I think J & C suffered a little with some not so great choreography. I usually really like Shane Sparks’ stuff, but this was not quite what I had hoped it would be. Caitlin came off a little too weak and soft until about half-way through when she did a little solo which I thought was great. And how about that slow back flip/roll thing she did?? Loved it! Jason did well with the moves he was given. Mary thought they were missing chemistry, but I didn’t get that impression at all. These two have great chemistry together. I want them to stay but they may be in the bottom depending on how well everyone else does.

Before they dance, we find out that Janette had bad teeth as a youngster and that Carlton Brandon does not work out for his body.

Dancers: Brandon & Janette
Dance: Disco by Doriana Sanchez to Loving Is Really My Game by Brainstorm
Number: 1-888-TEMPO-04
Judges’ Thoughts: (L) I believe that the primary focus of all obstacles is to induce labor so progression can be born. And I believe that right now I just saw the birth of progression in two amazing dancers. (ed: huh?)That was extremely amazing! Brandon, I thought you did an amazing job! (M) Holy smokes! I have never seen a disco done that fast! The two of you just nailed it! (N) I thought it was tremendous!
Angie’s Thoughts: WOW! That was a faaaast disco! I don’t usually care much for the Disco choreography on SYTYCD, but this time Doriana did a great job! Brandon and Janette brought it! I figured the jidges, especially Lil C, would hate it. they didn’t! Yay! Great job! I want them to stay.

Before the dance, we see that Vitolio loves motorcycles and Oskah Asuka blows spit bubbles.

Dancers: Vitolio & Asuka
Dance: Waltz by Louis Van Amstel to Dreams Are More Precious by Enya
Number: 1-888-TEMPO-05
Judges’ Thoughts: (M) Whew! Oh my goodness. (she cries) It was painfully beautiful. Vitolio, tonight was the most honest I’ve seen you dance. Asuka, the passion on your face was so endearing and believable. (L) I believe that the choppy steps you had going on was compensated for by the sincerity and authenticity of your emotion. Exudes…vulnerable…unfurl..dominant submission…(ed: seriously?) (N) Lines were sensational! Beautiful.
Angie’s Thoughts: Gorgeous! I don’t care about the technical stuff. I loved all of that! Please stay!!

Before they dance, we see that Max takes care of his roommates by cooking for them and Kayla texts a lot.

Dancers: Max & Kayla
Dance: Pop jazz by Brian Friedman to Hot Like Wow by Nadia Oh
Number: 1-888-TEMPO-06
Judges’ Thoughts: (L) Dancing is a language. I know how hard it is to pick up Brian’s vernacular. Max, very good. Kayla, you are amazing, period. (M) Max, you were quite a surprise. Kayla, you are just a beast out there dancing. You nailed it! Woooo! (N) You are a front runner, Kayla. You are an incredible dancer. Max, you kept up. The pair of you bring a lot to the program.
Angie’s Thoughts: How to explain that dance? It was interesting to say the least. I thought they BOTH did a great job, not just Kayla. Not as exciting as last week, but still great! I want them to stay!

Before we see them dance, we find out that Karla is a bad-ass hip-hop dancer and Jonathan really loves to sing but he’s not very good at it.

Dancers: Jonathan & Karla
Dance: Contemporary by Stacey Tookey to Falling Slowly by The Frames
Number: 1-888-TEMPO-07
Judges’ Thoughts: (M) I have never said this in 5 seasons, but Jonathan, you did that style better than your own. Tonight the light is just WOO on the two of you. I am just spellbound by the two of you. (N) Jonathan, there were no false moves. (L) I thought you both danced it beautifully. (and some other stuff that tried to sound super smart and deep)
Angie’s Thoughts: A new choreographer to add to the mix and I like her, though I see many shades of Mia in her style. I loved the way they danced this, however, I still am not feeling them as a couple.

Prior to their dance we learn that Phillip is a super nerd. In other words, he loves science. Jeanine loves her teddy bear.

Dancers: Phillip & Jeanine
Dance: Tango by Tony Meredith to Violento by Bailango
Number: 1-888-TEMPO-08
Judges’ Thoughts: (M) Phillip, I give you an A+ for attitude but a C+ for dance and technique. Jeanine, you were really hot. (L) Phillip was disconnected. (and some other deep thoughts by Jack Handey) (N) It wasn’t good but it was great entertainment.
Angie’s Thoughts: Phillip looked uncomfortable throughout the dance. He was quite awkward. I thought Jeanine really shined, though. I want them to stay!

Before we see them dance we see that Kupono is OCD and Ashley threw up all over her first grade class. The people, not the room!

Dancers: Kupono & Ashley
Dance: Hip-Hop by Shane Sparks to Imma Be by The Black Eyed Peas
Number: 1-888-TEMPO-09
Judges’ Thoughts: (M) It was OK. I didn’t hate it and I didn’t love it. It wasn’t memorable. (L) Kupono you struggled through that one and it made it hard for Ashley to mirror you. Ashley you had some nice moments. (N) I felt that stopped right when I started to enjoy it. I was sort of underwhelmed.
Angie’s Thoughts: I liked that a lot more than the jidges did. I thought Kupono was doing a great job almost the entire time. A couple of moments were slightly weak but overall, I loved him. Ashley held her own and had some really strong moments. Overall, I liked the choreography and think they did a good job.

Well, what’d you think? I think it was another great night of dancing, for sure. I think Lil C should stop trying to be so deep. I think Cat needs to stop trying to make a joke with every couple. As for who will be in the bottom 3, I think it will be Phillip & Jeanine, Kupono & Ashley and maybe Jason & Caitlin. I don’t want any of them to go, but that’s how I think it could happen. Leave your thoughts in comments! See ya tomorrow night! ~Ang~

Lil C sided with Mia AGAINST Brandon before, but now he likes him. I wonder how Mia will treat Brandon when she is a guest judge ? I think it’s next week, even though Nigel said it was tonight.
The group dance for tonight is a Mia choreographed number so that means Brandon has had to work with Mia this week. I’m sure Nigel or someone will bring it up again, tonight.

It’s funny how Lil C suddenly likes Brandon without Mia’s influence.
Ugh. :getlost:

Also, you know that whole Lil C comment about enducing labor and progression and all that? You KNOW he was saving that comment up just to use at some point on the show! He is just too funny!

    Aww…thanks d2!

Something I forgot to put in the blog last night… Didn’t Brian Friedman look like a cult leader last night?? I mean when he was sitting in the audience. His head’s all shaved and he had something around his neck and was wearing what could have been a tunic. Remember that guy who was the leader of that cult that all killed themselves and were found lying on their beds with cloths over their faces?? He looked like THAT guy! But I do love his choreography!

Well, this show wasn’t quite as strong as last week’s, but I still adore it!

I think Angie has at least two of the bottom three couples, but I couldn’t pick a third bottom couple!

I too usually don’t like the disco numbers, but I did like this one for a change. I really don’t get what Lil C is saying most of the time either, though he did have some sort of long alliteration thing in part of one of his comments that I found amusing, though confusing. Ah well, at least he’s not anti-Brandon anymore.

  9. another fine job angie :cheerful:

Why I have a STRONG feeling the AmIdol syndrome of being near or right in the beginning of the show is going to affect some couples? I don’t know, dial idol is really messed up with this show (everyone’s green, lol), but seeing Ade/Melissa and Evan/Randi at the bottom of the list….*proceeds to tell self not to think about it over and over…*

  11. rachel

And another thing…THANK YOU ANGIE !!!!
    Great job !!

This is going to be really tough guessing who will go home this week.
