I had to add this video to the blog as a separate post because even today there is still a ton of talk about the performance. It is by far one of the most original versions we have ever heard.
So what are everyones thoughts on Blake’s performance? Did you think is was the most original ever or were you far from impressed? Leave your thoughts in a comment.

Some week the judges tell the contestants to make the songs “their own”. Then last night Randy said he didn’t like it that they “made it their own.” MAKE UP YOUR MIND !!!! Either you do or you don’t !! :em26:
I loved it. And Blake is adorable. Hope he wins.
If a “artist” doesn’t want their songs screwed with, then they should not agree to have a night on AI with their songs being used. I truly enjoyed Blake’s version of the song and thought he did a fantastic job with it. As I have said before, Blake is a surprise every week and I have been a fan from the top 12. Jon Bon Jovi is completely a cutie but his voice is not all that.
I loved it!
And I agree with Angie that things can become new again. Just because it’s been done before, doesn’t mean that it can’t be unique now.
And if Bon Jovi didn’t want people messing with his music, then he shouldn’t have done AI. That goes for all artists. The whole point is to see what these contestants can do with the material you give them. If they can take a popular/beloved song, mess with it, and have people love it, then they’ve been successful.
I agree with some of the others who have said that, out of this season’s contestants, they would buy Blake’s cd. I think he’s very entertaining. But I think he has to continue to come back to the beat boxing, maybe not all the time, but often because that’s why he’s popular.
i personally enjoyed it…i thought that it was very well unique
I’m with Randy Jackson on this one. I thought it was perhaps the most original thing to happen on American Idol.
So what if beatboxing has been done before? Everything old is new again, right? I thought Blakes version of the song was fun and sounded contemporary. It sounded more like a straight out mix of the song more than it sounded like a bunch of beat boxing. Face it, the song isn’t really a singer’s song, anyway. AND, The Jovi ISN’T a great singer.
Blake’s not the best singer, but he’s a little different than the girls. He’s entertaining in a different way than Jordin or Melinda or Lakisha.
More power to Blake and his additions to each song!
Fades I think thats the way it should be. If you like someone buy there stuff.
Personally I grew up on the beatbox thing. It’s old and tired. Though some people were protected from that old rap style off the streets of NY. We were exposed to it continuosly. That was on every street corner in my hood. (I may add they were much better than blake at it.)
So while some of you find it unique and fresh. It aint!!!!!!!!
As for his singing. He can’t sing at all.
Bon Jovi was like any other true artist. They don’t like anyone screwing with there work.
You wouldn’t let someone change the Mona Lisa because they made it look cool to you, or would you?
Although I previously said I wouldn’t be posting anymore this season I feel the need to express myself regarding this performance.
I do not think it was the best performance I have ever heard on the AI stages. With that said, It was certainly the biggest risk anyone has taken, and by far the most original performance to date.
In a show filled with cookie-cutter and “play it safe” performances, this was certainly a breath of fresh air. Love it or hate it, it was NOT the typical soundtrack.
With all the set-ups, pimping, and preferencial treatment that seems to be on the rise, it’s nice to know that the show can still produce the occasional winning performance.
Personally, I think AI allowed it because they thought it would flop. Had they known it would have been this well recieved, I’m certain they would have discouraged it.
It seems at this point, Blake is the only one left that can pose a serious threat to the “chosen one”, and this at least makes the show a bit more interesting.
I fully expect AI to put him on first or second next week, and allow Melinda and Jordon to go last. I’m certain they would like to slow down Blake momentum before he upsets their pre-ordained preference.
I thought it awful but I’ll give Blake points for doing it there. This style has been done before outside of American Idol.
I liked it. I think if he recorded it, it would be successful. I really think Blake has potential even if he doesn’t win this competition.
I thought Blake’s version of “You Give Love A bad Name” was horrible. The guy can’t sing very well at all and in the end the beatboxing isn’t gonna save him. He ruined a wonderful song. I will give him credit that at least he picked the one Bon Jovi song that he could do that with. If he would have done that in “Living On A Prayer” it would have been blasphemy.
Here is an excerpt about it from EW.com (being interviewed is Idol Pianist Michael Orland who helps contestants arrange the songs):
EW – I think Blake will get a lot of the Phil and Chris votes. Speaking of which, there’s an internal battle in the halls of EW about whether his rendition of ”You Give Love a Bad Name” was brilliant or hideous. What’s your take?
Micahel – I thought it was so genius I couldn’t believe it. I was scared for him, though. I knew it could go either way, as we saw with Chris Sligh weeks ago. I was in the room watching Bon Jovi with him and Jon Bon Jovi was not digging it at all. But I thought it was so incredible and respectful of Bon Jovi’s version.
I agree with Jon. It sucked bad.
He was awesome ! I loved his performance ! Even though he is not as good a singer as Melinda and Jordin, he is MUCH more enjoyable to watch !
I too thought it was awesome. He is so talented and it is always a joy to watch him because he always seems to have his own twist on the songs he chooses. Way to go Blake – keep us wondering each week. I could see him taking it!
Has anyone heard what Bon Jov thought of it?
I LOVED it!!
This is just me-but if I could only have ONE download from this whole Idol season so far, it would be of Blake’s performance last week….I enjoy and admire him so much, because as a former musician myself, I struggled with what he does so seemingly effortlessly…..I could never read music.(I had to memorize evrything by hearing it), because in order to read music, you have to know how to divide the beat, and that takes a certain amount of proficiency in math that I did not possess. Hence, I could never do percussion, much to my dismay……Blake is not only a singer, but he is a percussionist/composer/strategist…..That, along with his look, is what makes him, in my humble opinion, the “coolest”, and potentially the most successful Idol contestant this season……I, for one, will be in line to buy his CD…..
I liked Blake’s version!! When I think of what it takes for an American Idol contestant to be successful (on the show or after), I keep coming up with something more than “voice.” Blake is creative. He brings something to the table, an edge, some guts….he’s the contestant with the best shot of being successful after the show, winner or not.
