I love Motown ! I’m REALLY looking forward to tonight ! FINALLY !!!!
I think this theme will be great, and I’ll bet Paula will be wore out from so much dancing. I hope somebody sings some Smokey. I’m giving up swimming laps to stay home. The whole speech thing threw my schedule out of sync. I really want to see Kara dance.

I would like to see Adam try and sing “BURNADETTE” or ” I”LL BE THERE”
by THE FOUR TOPS.
It’s funny you say that because I was trying to decide who could do “Bernadette” earlier today.
I was in my early teens when Motown started to rule the top 40 and The Four Tops were soaring high. They immediately became my favorites. I would love to hear somebody from Idol sing something of theirs. But they would be hard pressed to match the powerful high tenor strained sound of Levi Stubb. It would also be hard to match The Tops back up harmony.
I cant think of any famous singer who has ever recorded them. Their dark intensity was incredibly gripping and moving.

Megan–He Was Really Sayin’ Somethin’ by the Velvettes (later covered by none other than…Bananarama! lol)
Lil–Quicksand by Martha & The Vandellas
And as I said before, Adam should do, “Somebody’s Watching Me.”
I’m still working on the others..
I’ve decided I want Adam to sing “Somebody’s Watching Me” by Rockwell.
Back to basics!
Top 10 Theme week – Motown.
I can’t chose any songs for these idolettes. I love Motown but I don’t see how you sing Motown (if you stay true to the sound) and be contemporary. If you take the Adam route you po a lot of voters so the kiddies can’t really win this week.
That said, with the right song choices, I expect this to be Allison and Anoop’s week

I agree with the original post – It’s a little unseemly to be cavorting about on stage with one eye on becoming a singing star when you have only recently suffered a bereavement. I can only ask anyone who thinks Danny’s behaviour is OK to ask themselves whether they would approve of their own husband or wife doing something along these lines after their own passing. I’m reminded of a book that was popular a number of years ago “Women are from Venus and Men are from Mars.”
As a male I could relate to it. As a general rule men deal with their emotions more inwardly then women do.
This whole controversy with Danny Gokey reminds me of many true crime documentary shows where the police focus on the family of a murder victim and hound them to death because their ignorant tunnel vision is to lazy to let them see anything else.
This poor guy is being over analyzed and all anyone has come up with is rumors and mountains of nothing more then negative thinking.

I really thought I was through with talking about this but it turns out I am not. First I have to say that I don’t particularly like Danny Gokay. I am not impressed with his voice, I find him overly cocky, and …
That said, we do all grieve in very different ways. What brought this to mind was pictures and articles about Natasha Richardson’s death and funeral. Just looking at Liam you know that he is going to be back on set within a week. Off camera will he be hollyjolly? I doubt it but he has to finish the movie he is working. Vanessa and Natasha were supposed to bring A Little Night Music to Broadway this spring. Will Vanessa move ahead with the project, maybe sub Jolie in Natasha’s place, I doubt it. I may be wrong about both these assumptions but so what. It is NOT my place to tell them how to grieve. If Vanessa goes out and does 4 movies and 3 plays in the next year while Liam stays at home and does nothing will I think less of either of them, no…To be completely flippant about it, some people demand gas to have a cavity filled and some refuse Novacan (sp). Is one better than the other. no.

I have, in fact, thought about this very thing. I’ve been married for 18 1/2 years. We’ve been together for more than 20 years. My husband and I love each other very much. Since we’ve been together for so long, we know each other very well. However, we are MUCH different in the way we handle things. When I say things, I mean everything from hard times to good times to everything in between.
Were I to lose my husband today, I think I would be a ‘hard griever.’ That’s the only way I can explain it. I would have a hard time functioning and getting back to work. It probably wouldn’t be pretty for a short time, maybe longer than some, but then I’d HAVE to move on for my kids’ sake.
Now my husband? He would grieve for me, yes, but it would be much different. He’d plan the funeral, get all the formalities done, with tears, yes, but also with a no nonsense sort of way. A ‘get it done and over with’ kind of attitude. As soon as all the funeral and such were over with, he’d be back to umpiring and reffing which is what he loves to do the most. That’s his way and I would expect nothing different.
Now, putting us into the roles of Danny and his wife, I have to honestly say that I certainly would not mind my husband getting on with life 4 weeks later. I am quite certain that Danny’s wife knew he could sing and was probably of great encouragement to her husband.
Personally, I don’t think Danny’s cavorting, which by nature of definition is lively fun, is inappropriate. I do understand that others feel that it is, and that’s OK. I also would bet that Danny’s wife would be quite all right with Danny trying out for Idol and making it so far as opposed to holing up in his home and grieving and being depressed for months. Idol isn’t going to make him forget his wife or the love he has for her.
And that is, of course, just my opinion. And look! I didn’t even get mad, mean or bash anyone! Yay, me!!

I do the same thing; it can be fun, especially when you end up finding a new favorite song in the process
Come to think of it, I think “25 Miles” would be a great song for someone in the group to sing if they can bring the level of attitude it has. It’s tailored for a male to sing, but I think it could just as well be turned around.
I’m still trying to wrack my brain of what songs some of the others can sing, but there are so many good songs to choose from. I’m really excited to see what everyone does this week.

A month? Are you serious? So that means the happy guy we saw in the audition tapes was a grieving widower who had lost his wife only four weeks before. Sorry, but that’s not something a person does simply because, as you put it, “we believe what we believe.” I can understand a person returning to work after two days, as your uncle did, because the familiarity of a day to day routine can be very comforting and supporting during a period of what is actually massive change and upheaval in their life. But to compare this kind of coping mechanism with the reaction of someone who deals with his wife’s death by auditioning for a TV talent show is beyond belief. If you’re correct about the relative dates of his wife dying and the time of the audition, then what Danny Gokey did is not the action of a grieving husband, but it is actually strongly suggestive of the behaviour of a man with psychological pathology of a sociopath.
I don’t think I’ll be voting for him in future.
I think Allison will do well, she’ll prove all those with little faith wrong. This is a really great top ten list, anyone can post their own to our site http://www.toptentopten.com/. The coolest feature is you can let other people vote on the rankings of your list.

Do you have any idea of what a sociopath is?
Everyone copes with loss in his or her own way. Four weeks is ample time to grieve and then get on with your own life. He stated that this is something that his wife wanted him to do. He is fulfilling something his wife and he wanted prior to her death, and by doing this it also helps him along with the grieving process. Until you have walked a mile in his shoes, you have no right to call him any type of names (or any contestant). This is not high school, it is real life and everyone is different and handles tragedies in their own way with out the help of gossip mongers. :dizzy:

As I understand it (and please someone correct me if I have this wrong), she died about a month before the original auditions – so less than 9 months ago…People do what they do after a loss. I have been told that when my Dad died my Mom was basically catatonic for 3 months (I was too young to remember anything). I know that when my Aunt died at age 34, my Uncle was back to work 2 days later looking like nothing happened. Was one response “better” or more “appropriate”. No.
Some people feel that Danny is exploiting the death, some people don’t care and some are deeply moved by the story. We will never be able to tell if he wins (or loses) because of that. Not telling anyone not to have their feelings (I have strong ones in one direction, for instance) but beating the issue into the ground gets us nowhere. State what you believe and move on. This is truly an issue/argument that no one can win because we each believe what we believe. Off soapbox now. G’night

There is just a general case of people hating Danny because of him mentioning his wife before. Many people think he’s exploiting his deceased wife so there is a Danny backlash. I’m not really talking about here on this site, but generally out on the internet.

I guess we’ll agree to disagree on this one.
No, because you say song choice doesn’t matter in one sentence, but say what you think they will/should sing in the next. That’s contradictory.
I never said “Shop Around” means sleep around either. You all certainly like to put words in my mouth. It’s a song about playing the field, which I think would be tacky for a recently widowed guy to sing. If you disagree with that, then yes, we’ll agree to disagree.
And DrillerAA…why are you a moderator on a site if you “give up” as soon as someone questions you??
Driller didn’t “give up”, he just said he was through talking about this particular song and it’s appropriateness. His job as moderator is to get rid of offensive stuff and try to cool tempers. He still gets to have an opinion just like everybody else. Obviously there will be much agreeing to disagree about the song choice. We get it. Let’s all move on. Sometimes what seems like a good choice for a singer ends up being all wrong for many reasons so it really is all guesswork and preference when we make our choices on here.
I’d like to see Danny sing the old R Dean Taylor song There’s A Ghost In My House . I think that would get the message across about how much he misses Sophia and how thoughts of her are with him always. It would be so touching.

When did I say he “should be pilloried, drawn and quartered”? I just said I think the song choice is irresponsible when so many of his fans like him because he’s a nice guy. For those of you who don’t listen to song lyrics, why bother? The point of a song is to tell a story that is set to music. How many times have the judges criticized someone because they didn’t “connect” with the song? It seems clear that you want to hear a song you like, whether it would help Danny in the contest or not. Sorry, I thought you were fans of his. Guess I was wrong.
As for who I like, I’m a huge Adam fan! I think he’s very original and absolutely believes in every song he sings, which is what a true artist does. I can’t stop listening to “Ring of Fire”, I thought it was fantastic!!!
Wow.
I just think he’d sing the song well. I don’t think Danny has to ‘live’ every song he sings. I don’t think that about any of them.
Amen, forget about having to sing a song that “fits” your personal life, geez. I used to love “Shop Around” and never really listened to any of the lyrics other than “My Mama told me you better shop around!” Why do people have to jump on these personal bandwagons and continue to bang their drums when nobody else wants to play?
Loooove your new avatar, Angie!

Thanks! That was an ‘outtake’ from my daughter’s sr picture session. They’re all making faces. :)

All songs have meanings. That the point of them. If you all think Danny should sing a song about SHOPPING AROUND for a girl, then I think you’re not analyzing enough. I thought the reason most people like him is because he’s a good guy who loved his wife. I guess that’s not what you like about him, though. Maybe you hope as he’s shopping around to replace Sophia he’ll look your way or something.
I was fourteen when I first heard the song…get over it.
Funny stuff, “Jane”
Since you obviously feel Mr Gokey should be pilloried, drawn & quartered, care to enlighten us as to who you do like & why???
If that answer is “No one”, then feel free to tell us why you’re even here.

I can only assume that’s why DrillerAA would suggest “Shop Around”…I mean, the lyrics are quite straight to the point: “pretty girls are a dime a dozen….”
Actually, according to VFTW he told a dress reherasl audience that he lost his ring 2 years ago.
I read that too, Random. Thanks for pointing that out.
Wow! That’s even worse. Couldn’t he be bothered to replace it?! I’d kill my husband if he lost his ring and didn’t care enough about me to replace it.
And I could swear I saw him wearing a wedding ring in the early rounds. Was he pretending it was his wedding ring or something??
So why’d you sugget the song then DrillerAA? I can only see two interpretations for Danny in singing it. Either he’s shopping around now, or he didn’t shop around enough before choosing Sophia. Since I don’t want to think it’s the second one, it must be the first. But if you have a different interpretation of these lyrics, please tell us:
“[Spoken:]
When I became of age my mother called me to her side
She said ‘son you’re growing up now, pretty soon
You’ll take a bride’…
[Sings:]
And then she said…
‘Just because you’ve become a young man now
There’s still some things that you don’t understand now
Before you ask some girl for her hand now
Keep your freedom for as long as you can now’
My mama told me…’you better shop around’
a-whoa-yeah
You better shop around!
Uh-uh-uh
‘There’s some things that I want you to know now
A just as sure as the winds gonna blow now
The women come and the women gonna go now
Before you tell ‘em that you love ‘em so now
My mama told me…’you better shop around’
whoa-yeah
You better shop around
‘A-gotta get yourself a bargain son
Don’t be sold on the very first one
A-pretty girls come a dime a dozen
A-try to find one who’s gonna give ya true lovin’
‘Before you take a girl and say I do now
A make sure she’s in love with-a you now’
My mama told me
You better shop around.
[Instrumental]
Oh-hey-hey-hey
‘Try to get yourself a bargain son
Don’t be sold on the very first one!
A pretty girls come a dime a dozen
A try to find one who’s gonna give ya true lovin’
Before you take a girl and say ‘I do’ now
Make sure she’s in love with a-you now
Make sure that her love is true now
I’d hate to see you feelin’ sad and blue now’
My Mama told me
‘You better shop around’”
I have a feeling that whatever Danny sings will be considered cheesy by his haters.
I think Danny should sing “Skeletons” by Stevie Wonder. It was a No.1 hit and all, and with Danny’s “story” I’m sure it would be No.1 on iTunes! I do like DrillerAA’s suggestion that he sing “Shop Around” though, definitely seems like he’s shopping around for his next Mrs. Gokey, doesn’t it?!
Why?
I have a feeling that whatever Danny sings will be considered cheesy by his haters.
I can’t wait to see what actually gets picked!

Matt Giraud – Mustang Sally
Scott McIntyre – I Can’t Get Next to You
Kris Allen – You Are the Sunshine of my Life
Megan Cockrey – Where Did Our Love Go?
Adam Lambert – Superstition
Michael Sarver – Ain’t Too Proud to Beg
Anoop Desai – Super Freak
Reasoning can be found in the attached link.

Here goes nuttin’.
I would like to hear:
Allison singing You Keep Me Hanging On
Lil singing Chain of Fools (just to get it over with)
Megan singing Shop Around
Adam singing Nowhere To Run To (I’m blatantly lying here)
Danny singing Tracks of My Tears (lying again)
Anoop singing My girl
Mike singing I’m Leaving Here Today
Scott singing Dock of the Bay
Matt singing Signed Sealed Delivered (lying again)
Kris Kiss Him Goodbye
My work is done here. I’m going out for breakfast.
I would LOVE to hear a really good version of Just My Imagination.
The problem here is that most classic Motown (not all but most) is down by groups in 3 or 4 or 5 part harmony. I don’t think even Adam can pull off 3 part harmony by himself and the backup singers have been really CRAPPY this year (and do not get me started on the band.) Motown must be tight to be right!
I read through that list and it conjours up mosly bad performances by previous idol contestants. Remember My Girl by John Stevens? I hope these contestants watch back the Motown performances from years past and consider those critiques. Or else try a song that hasn’t been tried. For example, if Lil Rounds picks Heard it Through the Grapevine, she’ll be compared to Fantasia….. and where’s Fantasia now?
Youtube her at the Gladys Knight tribute. Spectacular!

Me either. I can’t even do it WITH a list, actually.
The picture is my now almost 9 yr old niece, back when she was about 8 months. She had “massive eyes like those monkeys in the jungle”. She looks more normal now.

Just going from Driller’s suggested list of Motown Songs:
Adam Lambert – Let’s Get It On
Lil Rounds – Where Did Our Love Go
Danny Gokey – Ain’t No Mountain High Enough
Michael Sarver – I Second That Emotion
Allison Iraheta – Heat Wave
Kris Allen – Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing
Anoop Desai – You Keep Me Hangin’ On
Scott McIntyre – Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours (he needs to do something jazzy)
Matt Giuard – Just My Imagination
Megan Corkery – Baby, I Need Your Lovin
Motown is ALL about the vocals. I hope no one does anything too fast-paced or too “band-y” (for lack of a better word – where the band makes so much noise that it drowns out the vocals).
So, based on my list, here goes nothing.
Adam Lambert – Super Freak – Ya gotta admit, it fits
Lil Rounds – My Guy
Danny Gokey – Shop Around
Michael Sarver – My Girl
Allison Iraheta – Please Mr. Postman
Kris Allen – What’s Goin’ On
Anoop Desai – You Keep Me Hangin’ On
Scott McIntyre – Just My Imagination
Matt Giuard – The Tracks of My Tears
Megan Corkery – Baby Love
Like I said, I’m sure none of these are actually available, but it would be fun.
