Pick The Candidates

Published on Sep 4, 2008 by in Politics

Last week I posted all the Candidates for Election 2008. The post generated some great comments and most of all, you guys and gals kept in under control.

There are always people who agree and people who don’t and that is what is nice about the blogging world. Everyone can voice their opinion, hopefully in a civil and controlled manner.

Now lets voice our opinion’s again. In an ideal world, who would you pick to run in 2008? Leave a comment with your candidates for both parties. They can be serious or funny.

I will never side with the artist. I’m a bitch that way. I’m through being nice. I’m ready to be cranky and bitchy when I want to be.
So, crooning “Happy Birthday to You” to family members and friends at home is fine, but performing a copyrighted work in a public setting such as a restaurant or a sports arena technically requires a license from ASCAP or the Harry Fox Agency (although such infringements are rarely prosecuted).
How ’bout when Marilyn sang Happy B-day to JFK??????

Personally I think this is a whole lotta nuttin’. If playing a song is going to influence somebody’s vote or if they’re going to attempt to gain some great insight into a candidate I would humbly request they look at more substantial issues first.
It isn’t a question of influence to my mind, it is a question of rights and ownership. I happen to disagree with a lot of the copyright laws but they are what they are. Artists own their material. Stealing is stealing.
In case no one remembers, George the Elder played Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry – Be Happy” & that caused quite a stir too.

BTW – copyright’s for songs work a heck of a lot differently than coming on my porch & grabbing a steak off my grill. Intellectual property laws are much different. When is the last time anybody payed royalties after singing “Happy Birthday”?
However, the Copyright Act of 1976 extended the term of copyright protection to 75 years from date of publication, and the Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998 added another 20 years, so under current law the copyright protection of “Happy Birthday” will remain intact until at least 2030.

Does this mean that everyone who warbles “Happy Birthday to You” to family members at birthday parties is engaging in copyright infringement if they fail to obtain permission from or pay royalties to the song’s publisher? No. Royalties are due, of course, for commercial uses of the song, such as playing or singing it for profit, using it in movies, television programs, and stage shows, or incorporating it into musical products such as watches and greeting cards; as well, royalties are due for public performance, defined by copyright law as performances which occur “at a place open to the public, or at any place where a substantial number of persons outside of a normal circle of a family and its social acquaintances is gathered.” So, crooning “Happy Birthday to You” to family members and friends at home is fine, but performing a copyrighted work in a public setting such as a restaurant or a sports arena technically requires a license from ASCAP or the Harry Fox Agency (although such infringements are rarely prosecuted).
Well, Heart certainly threw down today. They are very upset (as they have every right to be) that the Republicans used “Barracuda” without permission or even asking.
Barack Obama has also faced music controversy. Brooks & Dunn’s tune “Only in America” played after his Democratic National Convention speech, though the same song was used at President Bush’s 2000 inauguration and after Dick Cheney’s speech at the 2004 convention speech.

My first thought was that “Barracuda” was a poor choice, especially with a woman as the VP candidate. I know I’m a sap for this kind of thing but Lee Greenwood’s song about America would have been much more appropriate.
“Sarah Barracuda,” was Palin’s nickname that goes back to her days as an aggressive basketball player in high school.

If you ask me, and I’m SURE you are, this kind of thing only helps a song and it’s popularity. And please don’t preach to me about copyright and all that. I get it. I just find it all pathetic. Besides, playing ‘Baraccuda’ at the RNC can’t hurt the song as much as having FERGIE sing it.

I agree, Random. Heart should have been asked. Royalties and copyright aside, the use of their music which is so strongly identifiable as theirs, makes it look like they are endorsing a particular candidate.

Must disagree. If I write a song, bake a pie, develop new code for computers, it is mine, yours, not his, not hers. I can’t come in your kitchen and take your food…I spoke with people today who were ready to throw out their Heart albums/ CD’s – not ever download another Heart song etc. Their image is theirs. It does not belong to anyone else.

  21. Proof that conservatives and liberals can live together is me and my husband. Though, he does continue to say that he’s voting for “bin laden.” He does that just to drive me insane. He means Obama but back when Obama first started making news, he never could remember his name so he started referring to him as ‘bin laden.’ He’s a nerd. But, I could not care less how he votes as he could not care less how I vote. It’s a ‘whatever’ kind of thing between us.

Again, I will say, I can’t wait for November so we can get the political commercials and most of the fighting on TEH INTERNETS to end. Ok, that will never happen, but at least some other news story will take up people’s time and efforts.

PS CB, loved your last post.

  22. CB

My hat’s off to all four of them. I’ve done stuff in the last 6 months I wouldn’t want spread nationwide, never mind the past 51 years. I haven’t paid as much attention to Obama as I will now. McCain I have tremendous respect for. Biden I’ve known about for years. Palin – well, any woman who likes to hunt & fish & enjoys the taste of moose meat deserves closer examination.
We have a chance, as always, to choose the direction our country is going lumber towards for the next 4 to 16 years. Anyone who abdicates that responsibility, to paraphrase Shaw, gets the government they deserve.
Back in the day I used to be a supporter of a divided government, iow a Democratic Congress & Republican President or visa versa. It seemed logical that they’d compromise on stuff – especially spending – and they’d keep tabs on each other. Now it seems to be more the case of “you vote for my program & I’ll vote for yours” which sends spending completely out of control. I have no idea right now if either one can “Just Say No” to spending but if they can’t, as soon as 50% +1 of the voting population gets their sustenance from the government we’re all doomed anyway. Forget the federal budget – that’s a red herring. Look at the unfunded liability we’re going to have to support for not just social security but medicaid. That’s your problem & an issue that neither candidate will touch.

I can’t disagree with the learned Lady and Gentleman regarding what the Constitution says, but the reality is over the past century the Presidency has gathered most of the real power to itself. Occasionally the Court can overule but only when a president has gone off the deep end and suspend 800 year old rights like Habius Corpus. This is an important election with 4 extremely flawed candidates. But I am as blue as blue can be so, disappointed as I am that the Senator from Illinois is the candidate and the blowhard from Delaware is the VP candidate, they have my vote. In a perfect world…well i will save that for later.

  24. Mac

    Very well said Rachel….

I find it funny that the job of President is treated like it’s some kind of super powerful, all exclusive job. In fact, the Constitution clearly defines the role of the President and it’s pretty limited. Many of the things that are promised (on both sides) are just talk because the President does not have the power to do most of the things he/she wants to.

The real power in the US is in the hands of the Congress and the Senate. They are supposed to represent the people at a local level. I find it comical how they point fingers and blame at the presidential administration for things that are done when they themselves have the power to stop or alter many of the things they complain about.

Ok, off my high horse…. LOL

I am a little concerned about Obama. There is very little in terms of a resume that we can go on. He is promising the world but the costs involved in these promised are astronomical at best. I think he is naive and needs a few years of seasoning before he should consider the job of President.

McCain has always concerned me. I never quite know where he is on things. He seems to be all over the map. He loves to brag about reaching across the isle but I’m not so sure the times he’s done that have been productive for America (like the illegal immigration bill he was working on with Ted Kennedy). I really like Sarah Palin so I am leaning in McCain’s direction simply because I like her. Of course, he knew voters like me would like her and put her on the ticket to steal our vote.

I would love to vote 3rd party across the board. I have done that in the past as a protest. But I feel I need to vote for McCain to save America from 4 years of on the job training with Obama.

    It’s all so confusing…..

  25. Michael Johns/Dave Matthews all the way!

I don’t care about their political views…I just wanna look at them! Oh, and hear MJs accent. Having to be born in the USA?? Not in MY perfect world!

  26. I giggled outloud when I read “Pickles ticket”. It just sounds funny.

  27. DrillerAA

I dunno, in an ideal situation, I’d probably like to see a Mike Huckabee/Condeleezza Rice ticket. I think he’s a moderate enough Republican to work with both sides of the house and she brings the foreign policy experience to the table. If not them, then I gotta go with the KLC/Pickles ticket. I will not have Mowgli helping run the country, even if Carrie is in charge.

  28. rachel

If a Republican gets in, nothing will get passed, since both the House and Senate are Democrat and will put nothing through. Not good.
If a Democrat gets in, everything will be put through. Once again, not good.
    In fact, it’s scary.
I understand that the President of the United States can’t solve many problems without taking away freedom and therefore shouldn’t try.
I don’t want anyone as President who promises to take care of me. I want to take care of my own family. I don’t want anyone to feel my pain or tell me to ask what my country can do for me, or give us all money and take care of us. I do believe, however, that our Veterans should be helped to the utmost, since they have given so much for the freedoms in this country. Some of which have cost them their lives.
The Founding Fathers wanted the president “to faithfully execute the laws, defend the country from attack and check Congress with the veto power whenever it exceeded its constitutional bounds.”
It shouldn’t be up to the President to promise jobs for everyone, day care, dental exams and free stuff. This all must be paid for. And people are blind to see that we ALL will be paying for this. Individual citizens should do more for themselves, and not expect the government to save them at other peoples expense. This will cripple this country.
It’s really getting harder to find someone who trusts Americans to take care of themselves and each other without government force.
If we allow more government to run our lives, this is the beginning of the end as far as freedom as we know it exists.
    A very scary thought indeed.

  29.
Oh, and I noticed that you, Slim, did not voice any opinion on the candidates. I think I know who you lean to, but tell me so I can see if I’m right.
As for the real deal on who I would pick… Well I could care a less. I am not registered to vote and will never vote. The whole voting process is a crack.

It doesn’t matter who wins as president anyways, the winners are those who win the majority in the house. They get to make all the decisions.

  30.
Oh, and I noticed that you, Slim, did not voice any opinion on the candidates. I think I know who you lean to, but tell me so I can see if I’m right.
32. I’m sure everyone will think of this, so I am privileged to be the first to say it:

    SLIM FOR PRESIDENT!!!
